Commendble indeed is the ttitude of the Allegheny cmpus in keeping most of the college trditions during this trying yer. This fct ws brought home clerly during vction chts with students of other colleges. Mny schools hve disbnded lrge shre of their extr-curriculr ctivities which mke up fifty per cent of college life. Not so t Allegheny. Cn you think of ny mjor ctivity which hs been forfeited becuse of wrtime conditions? The A. U. C. functions powerfully, lying out n extensive undergrdute progrm. The frternities re very much in evidence regrdless of numericl reduction. Their governing body, the M. U. C.j intends to mke every effort to keep them ctive. Letter To The Editor.... n the Cmpus milbox the other dy we received the following letter from former Alleghenin, Rlph Dvis, '46, in which he enclosed his contribution to the Consolidted Wr Relief Chest. When our boys in the service, who re certinly doing their shre in the wr effort, show such interest in our projects t home, those of us who re fortunte enough to still be on the Allegheny cmpus should be even more enthusistic in mking our efforts successful nd in giving our wholeherted support to them. ARSENC OLD LACE A N D- By ROBERTA WATE For those of you who hd the courge, stmin nd curiosity to red the column of the most honorble gentlemn from North Est in the lst issue of the Cmpus, we feel it our duty to inform you tht this is our meger ttempt to set you right on few of his witty comments. Now Joe, you understnd, is fine fellow nd pechy dncer BUT he hs sid some vile things bout the clss of '47. t ws decided t recent mss meeting of freshmen tht Mr. Bckus should not be trred nd fethered s originlly plnned but tht he should be reprimnded by mens of dring expose of the true fcts in the Cmpus. Now tht our purpose is firmly estblished in your minds, we will go on to show you tht the frosh re not relly the innocent little bbes-in-the-woods the bove-mentioned writer would hve you believe. Perhps the best wy is to tke typicl freshmn nd give resonble fcsimile of his dily routine. t might be proper for us to dd tht, we will del predominntly with the mle species, since we re quite bit more closely relted to them. At 7:45 hppy little '47's lrm clock sys lusty good morning nd he tumbles out of bed singing "Oh, Wht Beutiful Morning" out of one side of his mouth nd muttering severl muffled curses bout the dormitory heting sitution out of the other side. He trots into the closet nd puts on pir of pnts, hndling them crefully so he won't cut his fingers on the crese, nd then dons other necessry clothing ccessories. He is very conscious of the fct tht he must mke good personl ppernce (for he hs herd rumors tht more thn one pir of upperclss trousers hs yet to see the inside of the dry clening estblishment.) Following the dressing routine, young Mr. Forty-Seven goes in nd shves, minly to better his ego nd not his ppernce. The next step in his dily progrm is wild dsh for the "Brooks Hsh House." Forty-Seven finds to his complete disgust tht "Rpid Robert" Tylor of "Who's Who" is on his wy down the steps to the dining room. He immeditely comes to the conclusion tht if Mr. Tylor hs lredy entered it is fifteen nd one-hlf minutes fter eight nd it is useless tsk to finish this brekfst mission. So he strts the brief trek to the grill for cup of coffee nd cigrette, which he intends to cll brekfst. He's herd tht's wht B.M.O.C. do. Clsses then follow. Need we sy more? Frnkly, yes, since mny people re not wre of the fct tht freshmen re people of immense intelligence who hve mstered the "oh, so tremendous" ide (Continued on pge 3) MEET THE FACULTY By HELEN HOUGHTON, '46 Miss Hnson, hve come to the conclusion, should nd could write n utobiogrphy in the guise of Corneli Otis Skinner. She could even best Miss Skinner with two ttempts t Europe to her credit. Her first ttempt ws t the ge of fifteen when she ttended the Lycee t St. Cloud just outside Pris. She couldn't spek word of French nd consequently won tht yer's prize for good conduct. Her second yer she ws punished continully for "tlking too much." She cme home fter two yers, nd hd terrible time convincing Wshington university tht she ws not too young to strt college nd tht her sojourn in Frnce hd not deprived her of the bility to spek the English lnguge. After Wshington she went to the University of Wisconsin for her Ph.D. But then the summer of '38 rolled round long with nother chnce t Europe; this time with determintion to find some excitement. As n ppetizer she ws severely reprimnded by one of Mussolini's pet gurds for tking pictures inside the Pntheon. From there she progressed to the Vticn nd the hnd of the lw reched out gin. One of the Pope's gurds refused to dmit her on the grndiose chrge of "no stockings." He ttempted to prove his point nd nursed sore hnd for severl dys from Miss Hnson's sturdy wlking shoes. Wr clouds strted drifting over Europe by the end of August nd she booked pssge for home. The lw wsn't through with Miss Hnson yet, however. Running to ctch her bot, she ws rrested by tough-looking policemn. Visions of lnguishing in jil when college begn cused some mrvelous extemporneous persusion but she wsn't relesed until proven to be n Americn citizen. The chrge? Jywlking! Even Miss Hnson's erly life could vie with Corneli Otis Skinner's. Her fther, zoology techer, rised her long with his mice, rbbits nd drosophilos. She followed in his footsteps for while, trying to rise n nt colony in the house. The nts wlked out one dy nd hve not been herd from since. Not t ll dunted, she brought home wht looked like n empty mud duber's house (hornets' nest for the uninformed) nd stuck it wy in deserted closet. The following spring Mrs. Hnson opened the door, nd Fibber McGee nd Molly vlnche cme buzzing out. Needless to sy Miss Hnson soon decided zoology ws not her line. She ws going to tech, though (from the ripe old ge of five she hd known tht) nd French ws her next choice. Then cme Europe, college nd Europe gin, until the fll of '39 brought her to Allegheny. For the lst few yers nothing very exciting hs hppened. She ws the str of student-fculty bsebll gme when she hit home run, but ws so fscinted she forgot to run home. Then, with Miss Ludwig nd Dr. Klfyn, she hd rce in Montgomery field one snowy winter dy, nd the hedlines in the next Cmpus red "KALFAYAN RUNS FROM BLONDES." When the wr is over, Miss Hnson wnts to tech nd write during the fll (she lredy hs hd poems nd rticles published by wellknown mgzines) nd to spend her vctions in Europe. She hs wndering strek, you see; she doesn't like to sty put. t's probbly inherited from her grndmother, who rn wy from home t the ge of sixteen. Miss Hnson idly mentioned the other dy tht it's "very trnquil here now," so mybe tht wndering bug is bout to bite. We only hope tht she'll continue to come bck every fll.
