2 Dear Diamond DIVAS, As this new year unfolds, I think it s time to be outrageous in our businesses. This word might scare you a bit, especially if your mind wanders to taboo, dangerous, or something that you ll keep at a distance. Outrageous can also bring to mind someone who is the center of attention, over the top, maybe even ecstatic or unique. As I return from Leadership, I started to think about just how outrageous our career opportunity is. For example, where else can you find a company that allows you to choose your hours, how hard you work, how much you sell, and shares the profit with you 50/50? Where else can you get paid to hold parties with your friends- where you all leave feeling beautiful, having a great time, they earn free product, and you make a little extra money at the same time? Where else can you help a friend out by offering such a fun career option that might fill in the extra income they are missing? Best of all- each person chooses their own pace- so you can choose to make it a career or hobby. That s outrageous! In Mary Kay, we celebrate each unique individual. We have nationals that wear almost no makeup, and others that absolutely love dolling up! We have some Glorias and some that you may not even know their name because they are so shy. Often, though, we demand too much of life. We set strict criteria for what will make us happy. When those criteria are not met, we develop attitudes that only make matters worse. The most basic, most revealing question you can ask yourself is, What does it take to make me happy? Do you have to be happy every minute of every day? Does everyone have to do what you want them to do? Does every aspect of your work have to be fulfilling all the time? Do you have to be making more money than everyone else? Do you have to have more power than everyone else? Do you have to be recognized and rewarded for everything you do? Do you have to be loved by everyone you know? The same attitude spoils many relationships. I ve seen many of them fail because one or both of the people involved demanded too much of the other. Not everyone is perfectly neat, beautiful, charming, loving, funny or attentive all the time. Life isn t a romance novel. Barbie and Ken are plastic. Even Richard Gere and Cindy Crawford discovered that beauty, money, fame, and charm don t guarantee a perfect relationship. We often demand too much of love and friendship, and the same is true of happiness. It s easy to be happy if you can find happiness in small doses. If you set impossible criteria for happiness, then it will be all but impossible for you to be happy.
