According to Head Master, Mr A D Pinheiro, We are proud to be hosting this prestigious event to honour our young men for their hard work throughout the year. It has certainly been a busy year for our school and we are working hard in making sure our boys are all participating actively in our extensive extra-mural programme. The Sports & Cultural Awards highlight the District, Provincial and National Representatives in all codes of sport available at DHS. As guest speaker for the ceremony, Calvin McGregor, a DHS Old Boy, 1998 Head Prefect and now part of the team at Beiersdorf Nivea, was invited to address the guests and learners before handing over the awards, along with DHS Sport Co-ordinator, Nathan Pillay. In his speech, McGregor referred back to the speech he delivered as Head Prefect at his final assembly in He said that what was relevant then, is still relevant today and that all learners should get more involved in all aspects of activity within the school. He described DHS as being a school at the forefront of the city and how much greater it would be if all learners pulled their weight and rocked up. The guys that do well in life are those that rock up, and get involved, he said. Time at school is very limited and what you make of it, is up to you. Get involved, he continued. Sport taught me team-work. The skill of team-work carries Head Master : Mr A D Pinheiro throughout life - to the work place, to marriage and more. Sport enables you to develop personality and confidence which are also life skills, he added. In closing, he once again referred back to DHS and there being three main factors that make the school one of stature. That of, Quality Leadership, Quality Sports Coaches and Some of the best facilities available for learners, right on their doorstep, he said. After his address, the learners were called up in their respective groups with all learners receiving a certificate of recognition and some learners receiving individual awards and trophies which were as follows: Cricket: U14 Bowler of the Year - Simbani Sibanda U14 Batsman of the Year - Sachin Soni U15 Bowler of the Year - Joshua Stride U15 Batsman of the Year - Brayden Sambhu U16 Bowler of the Year - Sholin Naicker U16 Batsman of the Year - Mohammed Ismail Indoor Hockey: U14 Player of the Year - Sachin Soni U16 Player of the Year - Sanolin Pather Open Player of the Year - Tiagan Terreblanche Hockey: U14 Player of the Year - Sam U14 Most Improved Player of the Year - Yanga Mdletshe U16 Player of the Year - Benjamin Hulett (cont d on page 2)
