Issue 4 24th November 2017 Dear Parents, We had a wonderful Sports Dinner on Friday evening. Professor Mark Bailey gave us a very entertaining talk on his illustrious sporting career. Thank you to all the parents who supported the event. It was a real celebration, not only of the important role physical activity plays in our school curriculum, but also of its lasting legacy; the memories of our alumni are a testament to that. I have spent several days this week back in the lecture hall at the Global Heads Conference and I confess I found it rather difficult to sit still for so long so I have every sympathy for the pupils! I look forward to seeing you all at the Christmas events to come and, of course, at the House Football tomorrow. Judy Waite Head Milbourne Wins Epsom College Prep School General Knowledge Quiz On Friday 17 th November we went to Epsom for a General Knowledge Quiz and for the third year in succession we won! We defeated Downsend in the semi-final by 365 points to 235 and against a strong Rokeby team we triumphed 475 points to 205 in the final. It was a fine team performance with everybody playing their part. Congratulations to our team of: Rowan Marshall (Captain), Tom Brocklebank, Thomas Purvis and Alexander Taylor. Mr Cowdrey

Form 2 Rhyming Poetry This week Form 2 have been looking at rhyming poetry. They looked at a poem with an AABBCCDD rhyming structure from Harry Potter and attempted to write their own Harry Potter poems! I m playing Quidditch on my Firebolt broom, As the other players past, I go VROOM!!! I m the best player, I m the seeker, Wait! There s the snitch! I ve got it! Eureka! That s right. It s the best sport. It s Quidditch! And I ve got the golden snitch. In the swishes of the wind, I caught the golden snitch and so I grinned. Arthur Ensor 2H I was really proud to play my first match as keeper, And my best friend was playing as seeker. I just hope we get the golden snitch, We need to be the best at Quidditch! My team needs to get the quaffle through their hoop, Maybe we could get past them with a little loop? Lucky for me someone on my team is Harry Potter, I was so shy that my face got hotter! Maxwell Gladding 2S Miss Slatter Form 6 Creative Writing Our Year 6 girls have been tackling some 11+ papers. Here are some examples of the work that they have been doing. Esme and Olivia's writing was a response to a black and white picture of St George rescuing the princess from the dragon. Rosie's piece has the title, 'Taking Care of Teachers'. Mrs Croom St George and Dragon: The Truth - By Olivia Marshall The princess could see George was struggling; beads of sweat had appeared on his forehead and his sword was rendered useless against the dragon's thick hide. It was all he could do to dodge the fierce bites from its dagger like teeth. One swipe and the sword cluttered useless to the side. St George squinted and raised his hand in front of his face, readying himself for the final blow. But it never came. The princess had picked up his sword and, ignoring the flames licking her arms, struck the dragon in its weak spot. The beast roared one, last, almighty roar and fell down dead. It was all over. The dragon had fallen. George had been saved by the princess. George got all the credit and, instead of being honest, twisted the story into his own victory. When she tried to intervene, no one would listen to her. Why was life so unfair?

The Princess saved the Dragon - By Esme Child And that is why we always leave the heroic work to the men! Mrs Snapper exclaimed. Millie despised this idea. What is the point in leaving all the fun adventures to the men whilst the women are in a cottage sewing and cleaning while their lives just disappeared? What hit her even more was that they didn t mind. Millie was a rather small little girl and was a princess. This was what she hated most about herself; because of this she was expected to sit around looking posh! For Christmas all the girls in her class wanted a doll; she wanted a knight set: a helmet, sword and shield. She did not have any friends; people thought she was weird. Because of this she got very bored. As she was sitting one day, with her mum telling her to Stop slouching, the postman came and said in his deep and husky voice, Must read immediately. So she ran downstairs and grabbed it out of his hands like a bird that hadn t eaten for months. It said on it Come immediately the prince is slaying a dragon. As Millie pondered on what this dragon could have possibly done wrong she sprinted to the centre of the town. There she saw the beast it was not as loud as she had expected. That was not a bad dragon. In Millie s spare time she had learnt a lot about dragons. And then she screamed, What did he do to you? and dashed to the prince. She snatched the sword and ran to the dragon, cut its chains and in a split second it was gone. The princess, you could imagine, was in a lot of trouble but she did not care. Although other people did care, so she knew that she did the right thing and to her, that s all that mattered. Taking Care of Teachers - By Rosie Walker The first question you re probably asking is why do we have to take care of teachers? We have to take care of teachers in case they go mad, have a fit, or just need taking care of. Let s take Miss Fiddlesticks. Miss Fiddlesticks is the maths teacher and she has to be taken care of, as she can have a fit at any time. If you re wondering why we should take care of teachers: because your teacher needs taking care of. Listen carefully. 1) We can take care of teachers by giving them their food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) with lots of their special medicine: chocolate. No teacher who needs taking care of can live without it. 2) We have to take care them all the time just in case they have a fit, go mental or turn into a wild animal, whilst you are away. 3) Don t worry, if you re thinking of transporting your teacher you do not have to hide them underneath a blanket, or make it as if their life depends on it. Simply, you have to take them to the other place, unless it is in public, then you re in trouble. If it is in public you have to do it as 00:00 exactly when nobody is awake, because anything could happen when everyone is up and running. If you have followed this guide you are guaranteed to have your teacher in good hands, that s if you haven t made any mistakes!

House Championship A total pot of 2000 points will be shared out between the Houses at Saturday s House Football. Every game could make the difference. Points Top contributors this term so far: 1st Green 5294 Lowe Mills, Joseph McNally, Boris Duke 2nd Blue 4936 Amelie Patel, Otto Scott Holland, Darius Pham 3rd Amber 4486 Aarav Barathan, Sebastian Foster, Rory Keller 4th Red 4162 Henry Franke, Nyan Solanki, Frankie Platt Mr Angus Dear Parents, Excitement is building as the Pre-Prep children prepare for our Christmas production of 'A King is Born'. The children are all working really hard to learn their parts and they are really looking forward to performing for you all on Friday 8th December. All the costumes have started to arrive in school, so thank you for your support with this. A gentle reminder that we would like all costumes in named bags at school by Monday 27th November. Casting our minds back to last Friday, we had another fantastic charity event raising money for Children in Need. All the children looked fabulous in their spots and a special thank you to Mrs Franklin-Mitchell and the School Council for arranging such a successful event. The cake sale was definitely a highlight and we are delighted with the amount raised for such a worthwhile cause. With best wishes, Mrs Elmer Head of Pre-Prep

On Friday 17th November, Pre-Prep hosted a fabulous fundraiser for Children in Need. The children came to school dressed in an assortment of spots and enjoyed making cakes throughout the day for this wonderful cause. The cake sale was a huge successmany thanks to all the School Council children who helped with the smooth running of this event. The total money raised was , all of which has been sent to help disadvantaged children and young people. I would like to thank all the teachers and particularly the parents, who supported the cause. We can not hold these events without your continued support. Mrs Franklin-Mitchell Florence Nightingale Immersion Day Year 1 enjoyed an exciting immersion day last week packed with a fun range of cross-curricular activities. It was a great way to consolidate and deepen the children's understanding of our Florence Nightingale history topic. The most exciting part of the day was the visit from the 'Teach it through Drama' production company. The children, dressed as nurses, soldiers and doctors, had fun in role whilst learning about aspects of Victorian life, the Crimean War and the nursing methods pioneered by Miss Nightingale. Many thanks to all Year 1 parents for your fantastic costume efforts! Mrs Franklin-Mitchell

Football U9A v Sunningdale This was a great game to watch with some lovely flowing passing movement from the boys which allowed us to win 4-0. We had some great performances especially Philip in goal in the first half which allowed us to keep a clean sheet. Special mention goes to the goal scorers Alex 2, Theo 1 and Alexi 1. U9A v Parkside/Aldro The boys played two back to back matches and did very well to keep their energy levels up. In the first game against Parkside both sides had chances to win the game but the final score was 0-0. In the second game we lost 1-0 which was a shame as we had the majority of the clear cut chances but couldn't put the ball away. In the game we had some fantastic defensive play from Flexi and also great goal keeping from Rory. U9A v St Andrew s This was a good game of football to finish off our season. The boys played some very exciting football, especially in the first half, although it was sometimes backs to the wall in the second half. The game finished 3-3 which was a fair reflection of the game as a whole. I would like to pay special mention to Maxwell, Raffy and Jack who all stepped up and really played their part in a great game of football. U9B v St Andrew s The boys played very well and had several opportunities to score but unfortunately luck was against them and they lost 1-0. On the positive side there was plenty of good football played and the boys never gave up. The boys should be pleased with their effort overall this season. U9C v St Andrew s This was another close game which was decided by a good winning goal scored by Joshan, who played with an incredible amount of enthusiasm and effort. The boys worked well together as a team throughout the game, which has been a hallmark of this season. Again the boys should be pleased with their effort throughout the season. I would like to say what fun I have had with the U9 teams this term and I have seen improvement from all the boys in both their footballing skills and their attitude. I would like to thank the parents for their support on the touch-line this term. It is always great for the boys to have lots of vocal support. Mr Drummond 3 rd XI v Rokeby This was a game of two halves. In the first the boys competed really well and had some good shots on target. We played well and kept our shape. We were unlucky to go in at half time 1 nil down. In the second half, after we conceded the second goal, our heads went down and unfortunately we lost 7-0. There were some good performances with Edward being a stalwart in defence and William making some good runs and interplay down the left flank. Going forward the boys need to concentrate on making sure that they are stronger in the tackle. Overall there were more positives than negatives. Mr Drummond

3rd XI v Parkside What a difference a few days makes and the inclusion of two new players namely Sonja and Lucie. This was a completely different team, there was some great football played, tackles were flying in and no one took a step back. We went into a 3-1 lead thanks to goals from Lucie 2 and an effort from William or Danny (it was difficult to tell who actually scored!). As only the 3rd's can, we let them back into the game in the second half and they led 4-3 going into the last few minutes. However, we did manage to bring it back to 4-4 courtesy of an own goal and that was no more than the team deserved. The man of the match goes to 2 players who the opposition coach said played the best football throughout the game and that was Lucie and Sonja. What a great game to finish the season with. Mr Drummond Netball Seniors v Box Hill The senior girls put on an impressive display of netball and sports-womanship on Wednesday against Box Hill. It was a fast paced game with Milbourne showing composure under the post to secure a 9-5 victory. The girls showed a lot of character when challenged to play out of their comfort zone and take on a new position. A special mention must go to Jeong Lee and Amel Khan who both stepped up to the mark and played at goal shooter and goal attack, putting in excellent performances. Sonja Thurow was named girl of the game for her fantastic work ethic and attitude. Well done girls! Miss Watson Middle B v Rowan The Middle B girls were victorious in their match against Rowan. The girls scored five goals in the first quarter- what a start! The goals were scored by Ella MacKinnon and Scarlett Sleeman. For the remainder of the game, Claudia Ryder and Esme Jordan took the shooting positions. They each had multiple attempts on goal whilst Aura Reeves and Lilian Ye shared the Centre position. Jaya Mittal worked hard in the Wing positions and gained possession of the ball which she was able to pass to Milbourne's attacking end. Hattie Sabben-Clare did a fantastic job in the Goal Keeper position and stopped Rowan from scoring further. Rowan scored two goals in the last quarter ultimately resulting in a 5-2 win to Milbourne. Yet another great performance, girls. Miss Slatter Juniors v CLFS The junior girls played their first match against City of London Freemen's on Friday 10 th November. It was a fast paced game which meant the girls had to work very hard to obtain and maintain possession of the ball. In the latter half of the match, the Milbourne girls had warmed up and successfully passed the ball to their attacking end of the court resulting in two goals, scored by Elsie Anderson. Evie Ensor could be seen sticking to her marker like glue and played well in the Centre position. Mrs Kennard and Miss Slatter had to remind the girls on a few occasions to only call for the ball if they were in a space and not pass back towards the defending goal. Aura Reeves was voted Girl of the Game by the opposition. Miss Slatter

Girls Football U11 v Rowan A closely fought game saw Milbourne suffer a narrow defeat to Rowan. Milbourne showed a fantastic attacking spirit, with Helena Ingram working tirelessly in midfield to creating numerous attacking opportunities. Lucie Jordan and Esme Child both hit the woodwork on several occasions and were unlucky to not add more to the scoreboard. A special mention must go to Olivia Marshall who showed confidence in goal pulling off some excellent saves. Girl of the game was awarded to Helena Ingram for her sensational work ethic. Miss Watson U9 v Rowan The U9 girls put on a sensational performance on Thursday afternoon against not one but two Rowan teams. With the help of an enthusiastic crowd, Milbourne were quick to show their attacking prowess by putting the Rowan defence under pressure. Anneka Huo put in several strong tackles to regain possession and played it out wide whenever possible for Evie Ensor to run on to. Elsie Anderson came out of goal, after the break, and caught the Rowan defence off guard with her blistering pace on and off the ball. After having two shots cleared off the line, Elsie put Milbourne ahead with a fantastic strike finding the bottom corner. Milbourne continued to attack with confidence with Eloise Newman and Aura Reeves working tirelessly in midfield to provide attacking opportunities. Milbourne extended their lead thanks to a quick break with Elsie skipping past two players and calmly slotting the ball away. Anna Wang and Lilian Ye showed true Milbourne spirit by showing grit and determination to consistently clear their defensive lines. Rowan continued to attack; putting the Milbourne defence under pressure. They were rewarded with a goal after a period of repeated attacks. It looked as though the final score was going to be 2-1 until Elsie intercepted the ball on the half way line and accelerated down the wing, slotting the ball away in the dying seconds to claim her hat-trick. Girl of the game was awarded to Aura Reeves and Elsie hat-trick hero Anderson. Miss Watson
