1 Our Vision: Engaged and successful learners who achieve excellence and contribute positively to society Newsletter 9 th September 2016 E matahi ana e mataara Principal s message: Kia ora nga matua The past two weeks have again brought some excellent achievements from our Masterton Intermediate students: ACCELERATED LEARNING IN LITERACY (ALL) On Friday, September 2, Amanda Jolliffe and Cam Maunder presented our A.L.L. report to the Ministry of Education. The 56 target students and their teachers worked extremely hard over the 15-week programme with the following results: - 82% of the students made accelerated progress in their writing of two years during this 15-week intervention - 93% of the students have made measurable progress during this 15-week intervention We feel extremely proud of the success that has been achieved through the ALL programme. Thanks to all families for the support that you have given to your children who have been involved in the target group. HAKA WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT It was a hard call, but it was the right call! We had a great deal of debating on Wednesday and some in-depth discussion with some experts from the Metservice, and the forecast came true! Our postponement date will be confirmed once we have heard back from all of the schools involved. It is important to work out when most people are available so that we can come together and SMASH this record! KIWI QUIZATHON On Wednesday, September 7 we had our final test (50 questions selected from each of the four sets.) All students are encouraged to hand sponsorship money in to the office before Friday, September 16. 3 This is a summary of some of the things at risk with the government s Global Funding proposal. There will be a number of meetings to discuss and oppose this. We thank you in advance for your support as we fight for what s best for our students! To find out more and learn what you can do to help, please visit Snapshot on sports: MIS teachers will be attending the Paid Union Meeting at Wairarapa College on Tuesday 13 th September at 1:30pm. SUPER SPORTS FOOTBALL/SOCCER The boys and girls First XI soccer squads travelled to Wembley Park in Whanganui for the annual Super Sport tournament on Wednesday, August 24.The boys team, coached by Dave Dale and Cam Maunder performed outstandingly to win 5 games, draw 1, scoring 18 goals and conceding none. This was a squad of highly committed MIS boys who were selected through lunchtime and after school trials. They committed a great deal of their own time for trainings and put together a fantastic banner-winning performance. I am sure that you will join me in congratulating the following players as well as the coaches for this major success: Travis Bartlett, Ryan Butler, Sam Dale, Jake Gain, Olly Jones, Nahum McPhee, Max Mitchell, Scott O Connor, Jayden Riddell, Jonte Seale, Makaia Sutton, Ethan Tickner, Jayden Watt and Hadley Wiramanaden
4 MIS Soccer Break up A Break up party for MIS soccer teams will be taking place on Thursday 15 th September at 3:30pm. This will be a great opportunity to celebrate a good season and thank our hard-working coaches and managers for their work. Students who have displayed a high level of commitment to their team at trainings and games will be given an invitation letter on Monday. AIMS GAMES Our Year 8 Boys Cross Country team of Jack Britland, Kosta Mills, Max Mitchell and Joel Sylvester, as well as Siena Cockburn and Sam Dale (both swimming) competed at the A.I.M.S. Games in Tauranga from September 3 to 6. The team recorded some excellent results against top quality opposition from within New Zealand and beyond. The results were as follow: Results Cross Country - Year 8 Boys Team 12th overall with Kosta Mills 15th Swimming - Siena Cockburn (W12) - 50m Free Silver Medal (2nd), 100m Free 5th, 50m back 8th Sam Dale (M13)- 50m breast 7th, 200m Free 7th, 100m breast 5th, 200m breast 4th The trip up to AIMS was really cool, but I was the only girl so I hung out with Ms Hamill a lot. Watching the running was really cool, there was this one hill that the runners had to run up and it was really steep and high. After the running we were at the pool for two days. I felt bad for the runners because they had to watch Sam and I for two days and we only had to watch them for an hour or so. The swimming was awesome, but it was really tough to get into a final and I made it into three finals. The 50m freestyle is always my favourite race, it's fast and it's over really quickly. The final was close, at first I thought I got 6th because I looked at the time next to my lane but then I looked at my lane and I was 2nd - it was one of the best moments of my life. Receiving that medal was a representation of what I ve worked for, for nearly five years, it was amazing Siena Cockburn Room 15 Celebrating our success: TECHNICRAFT AWARDS The Technicraft Awards for displaying the A.D.M.I.R.E. values in each of these Specialist Areas were presented in assembly on Monday, August 29 to: Cooking Shanice Hetherington Room 12 Design Technology April Watson Room 3 Music Tom Cardno Room 11 Science Tayla Davidson Room 2
