1 NEWSLETTER April 2017 LETTER 8 Dear Parents and Carers, Welcome back to our Summer Term! I hope you all enjoyed the break. The last few weeks before Easter were packed with excitement. Our Comic Relief day was filled with fun and joy, and raised a whopping 1,900 (see the article below). The following week Bugsy Malone hit the St Mary s stage! It was colourful, vibrant and energetic and above all great fun. Thanks and congratulations to the production team and especially Mr Collins, Miss Bester, Mr Heyburn and Mrs Woodward. Also thanks to Kate York who took so many amazing photographs of the performance for us to treasure. We have continued to have lots of success in our sporting ventures. You will also see in this newsletter that we now have our own Art Council, who visited a sculpture park with Mrs Gautrey (see below). Exciting new things are planned for our Party in the Playground on 30 th June reserve the date! Thank you to everyone who has already replied to my survey, the results of which we will use to support our grant bid for an all-weather pitch. It closes on Tuesday! Most of the proceeds from the FUN RUN this year, on 26 th May, will be going towards extending and enhancing play-space for the children. If we work together we can make this happen! On Monday we held a very moving Eastertide service in the Oasis blessed by the sunshine before the colder weather moved back in! We reflected on the Christian messages of sacrifice, forgiveness and re-birth and how these can apply in our lives today. As ever we have a busy term ahead and I thank you for your continued support for all our many and varied activities. Best wishes Sarah Lewis

2 Golden Boot Challenge St. Mary's is taking part in the Golden Boot Challenge, the biggest school travel competition in the country! The annual Golden Boot Challenge is designed to encourage children, parents and schools to choose sustainable alternatives to the car on school journeys. The Challenge will run from 5th-30th June. This year, with the Olympic legacy, the emphasis is on cycling. We are aiming to make 10% of our journeys by bike. If we achieve this St. Mary's will be awarded a gold medal! The results are being recorded online. Go to then click on the Golden Boot icon to see how we're doing. You can also try out the system yourself! Mrs Woodward Deputy Head Teacher SurreyHealthySchools Introducing the NEW Surrey Healthy Schools Awards! You can now apply for Surrey Healthy School Status at three different levels Bronze, Silver and Gold. Art Council Trip to The Sculpture Park On Thursday, 22 nd April the school art councillors had the opportunity to visit The Sculpture Park in Farnham. The aim was to get some inspiration for our focus on Outdoor Art for our school grounds. The park was set in 10 acres of beautiful woodland which was full of a range of different types of sculpture. It was a wonderful experience for the children and the adults. We are looking forward to sharing our ideas with the rest of the school and being able to use these to make our own grounds a more creative and inspiring place. Jane Gautrey School Lunches Please remember to pay for school lunches in advance on Tucasi or by cash or cheques make payable to Surrey County Council. 4 Choir What a wonderful time the school choir had on Tuesday, 25 th April. We arrived at Woldingham School just after lunchtime where we launched into a whole afternoon of music workshops. In only a few hours we had learnt two new songs, a samba rhythm and a disco medley including actions. After only a short break, we were on stage again performing with 4 other schools from the Tandridge area. It was great to get the chance to sing and perform in a large group as well as doing St Mary s proud in our solo spot, singing beautifully and even in harmony! A big thank you to all the parents who helped to transport us. Jane Gautrey Comic Relief On Friday, 24 th March a sea of children wearing red entered the school for the latest Comic Relief Day the theme of which was Make your laugh matter! The day started with an assembly. Our value of the month was compassion and the pupils had really taken on board the idea that When compassion meets action lives change. We admired the ingenuity of some of the outfits and marvelled at the face painting skills of some of our parents! We reported on the amount of money which had been already raised by the Comic Relief Disco organised by the PTA- a fantastic 646. With the donations the children had made for wearing red to school, the total was already over 1000 and we had our Comic Relief fundraising afternoon still to go! Every class had organised some stalls or competitions, the variety of which were staggering. Cake stalls were a firm favourite but there were also custard pie throwing competitions, fruit kebabs to sample, designing your own nose, an apple bobbing competition, beat the goalie, hair and beauty and lots more! The total raised was 1,900! Well done everyone and thank you for your support! Mrs Woodward Deputy Head Teacher

5 Year 5 Reach Surrey Cup Final! The Year 5 boys' football team continued their fantastic run in the Surrey Cup, defeating Royal Russell school 2-1 in their semi final match. St Mary's started fantastically well with Freddie Shaill scoring within the opening ten minutes, from a corner taken by Josh Solecki. Max Virley ensured St Mary's kept their lead after clearing the ball off of the line just before half time. In the first minute of the second half, Josh Solecki s corner was bundled in by a Royal Russell defender to make it 2-0, then straight after kick off Royal Russell pulled one back. George Peachey saw a shot rebound off the post. St Mary's had several chances but were unfortunate not to extend their lead so saw themselves into the Surrey Cup Final, which will be played during the summer term against Cleves School. Defender Alfie Mercer was awarded Man of the Match for calm defending throughout. A fantastic game of football was won by an outstanding team effort, each player putting in 110% effort to win for the school. This is certainly a team for the school to be proud of! Squad: Jay Andrews (GK) (c), Alfie Mercer, Max Virley, Josh Solecki, Jacob Hunt, Joseph Hunt, George Peachey, Alfie Westcott, Harvey Baines, Freddie Shaill. Windsor win Orienteering Inter-house! Throughout the spring term, all year groups have been taking part in Outdoor Adventurous Activities for their PE lessons, with team building, bouldering and orienteering as the main emphasis. This was finished with an Orienteering Inter-house around the school grounds. Points were awarded for correct finds, whilst points were deducted for incorrect finds, so correctly orientating and careful map navigation were essential! The Year 3 winners were Windsor, with Stuart as runners up. In Year 4 Tudor were the winners, with Hannover as the runners up. Year 5's joint winners were Tudor & Stuart, whilst Year 6 had very close results, with Stuart winners by 1 point, and Windsor & Tudor joint second. After final scores were totalled, Windsor were the overall winners! Well done to everyone who took part in this new event on the school calendar. Netball South East Surrey Finals After the Years 5/6 Netball 'red' team won the district netball finals, they progressed onto the South East Surrey finals. Placed into a challenging group, the team won 4 out of 4 group games convincingly, winning their group and taking only 1 point less than the maximum possible. Unfortunately the team were defeated in the final game of the day by Earlswood, who progressed to the county finals as a result. The team worked extremely hard for each other throughout the tournament, showing outstanding sportsmanship and team spirit in every game. Well done to everyone who took part - a team to be proud of! Thanks must also go to Lynn & Maggie from Girls Attack who have been coaching the team over the past few weeks. Squad: Olivia Cholerton, Dan Brown, Joe Marks, Daisy Pulley, Jess Quick, Fin Stables (c), Hattie Wallace Mr Heyburn PE Coordinator
