HAMILTON BMX CLUB Minogue Park, Moore Street HAMILTON POSTAL ADDRESS: P O Box 1251 WMC Hamilton hamiltonbmx@xtra.co.nz Website: SEPTEMBER 2017 NEWSLETTER Welcome back after our winter break. There has been many things happen during the break. Firstly, a big congratulations to Jessie Smith taking out World#1 in both the 16 Girls and the 16 & Under Cruiser at the recent UCI World BMX Championships held at Rock Hill in the USA. Also congratulations to Jason Kelly retaining his World# 5 in the 30+ Men s 20. The club had a number of riders compete at the event but with over 3000 riders it was a big event. Our riders also had to contend with extreme weather conditions too. Cruiser riders had their moto s cut from 3 to 2 (same as Nationals at TA) and the wind/ gale came through the venue toppling the Marquees and to top this off they ended up with heat at close on 40 c. All in all it was a great event. Our NZ riders overall did not get the results that they wanted, but that is BMX racing. Jessie Smith World#1 16 & Under Girl s Cruiser 1
Club Nights - due to the weather we decided to cancel club nights & have a break with the 1st club night for new season being the 23rd August 2017 Opening night turned out to be an awesome first night with 83 riders in attendance, and yes we have now had 2 wet nights We have had very successful club nights over the last season, but we need volunteer s to come forward please. The few of us in the Admin building or the BBQ can only do so much. Also call-up. We need a couple of extras up on the gate to guide the little ones into the correct lanes. Please folks it s the old cliché Many hands make light work. We will attach a list of jobs where help is required each week. Please fill in and return with the area you can help in. If everyone comes forward you may only need to help once in the season. Concession tickets for club nights are available and can be purchased through our Web. These are paid online, or you can purchase on club night and we have Eftpos available for payments. Please check our web as we now have online registering for club nights to try and speed up the registering time. We will shut off at 5.30pm. Hamilton BMX Club : - Portfolio s President: Marc Lawrence Vice President: Sam Gardner Club Captain: Emily Allison Secretary: Lynda Ardern Treasurer: Elaine Lucas Co Ordinators: Track Manager: Jarred Banks Striders: Celeste Way Raffles: Diane Gordon Shop: Kylie Cassells/Lynda Ardern Club night Registration: Lynda Ardern/Mary Lyall-Brennan/Celeste Way Media/Promotion: Mary Lyall-Brennan Newsletters: Mary Lyall-Brennan Funding: Elaine Lucas/Sam Gardner Child Protection: Diane Gordon/Celeste Way Sprocket Administrator: Sharon Brunton Sprocket Training: Emily Allison/Courtney Brunton BEM System: Lynda Ardern/Wendy Young/Mary/Emily Events: Lynda Ardern/ Elaine Lucas and all of Club. Buddy Captain: Bailee Lyall-Brennan Health & Safety: Marc Lawrence Website: Lynda Ardern Sponsorship: Elaine Lucas/entire committee & members First Aid: - We have a number of our personnel that hold First Aid/Paramedic/Nursing Qualifications: Mary Lyall-Brennan, Lynda Ardern, Diane Gordon, Celeste Way, Sheree Williamson, Laura Russell, Jeremy Cassells, Joe Calkin and Glen Maclennan. Hamilton BMX Club has a first aid kit, neck braces & a defibrillator held in the administration building. These are in designated areas well labelled. Sponsors for 2017/2018: A letter will be sent to all our members requesting they look for sponsorship for our club. In November our club will hold their annual event and we will require sponsors. The more sponsors we receive will enable the club to progress during the season. Income from Sponsors not only make the event a success but if there is surplus this goes towards the running of the club administration. 2
Eg:age group sponsorship for event starts from $50 plus GST, event sponsorship can be product or an amount, board sponsorship annually $200 plus GST (forms are available online or just or if you wish to discuss anything please contact us and we answer your queries. We also require Major sponsor for naming rights ($500 + GST) Raffles As a club we run several raffles throughout the season eg; Father s Day, Mother s Day, Xmas, Events, Valentines, Easter etc so we would like to ask our members when we run a raffle that we could all donate an item according to the raffle.(we will ask prior to each one.) First one up will be Father s Day. So it will be raffle selling from day 1. Check your cupboards, you may find those unwanted gifts hidden at the back of the wardrobe. ****We had a Father s day raffle on opening night. Very few tickets were purchased and as we have had to cancel because of the weather we will continue to sell this raffle. Tickets are $2 each or 3 for $5. ****Please note that all profits from the raffles allow the club to purchase the little extras. eg; Lollies for Santa to give to our riders, wrist bands & pens when you join the Club. Raffles also paid for this year s Scholarship. Gate & Board Advertising: The club is offering advertising on our gate. There are 8 lanes and each area on the gate is approx 900 x 800. The cost of the advertising is $200 plus GST per annum, and the advertiser must supply their advertising. We are also offering Board Advertising which will be placed outside on our building each club night and at all our events. Our lease with the Hamilton City Council will not allow the club to have permanent advertising in and around our venue. It is called sign pollution. We have a lane on the gate available, plus all the other board space available. So don t miss out. If you are interested please contact Lynda Ardern ASAP. Number Plates: A gentle reminder about number plates. Hamilton Club requires number plates on Club nights. This helps us determine who is a rider if they should crash. It is the number that people call as they do not necessarily know the rider. The club has number plates you can purchase - cost $10 Yellow with black numbers Club and Challenge riders - Male Red with White numbers All Cruiser riders Blue with White numbers Club and Challenge riders Female Sprocket rider s number plates come in their package. All riders must have a HN prefix on their plate. Plates must be clear and not have writing or stickers all over them. Sprocket Training: This season Sharon Brunton will be the administrator for the sprockets. Sharon will keep a register of the Sprockets along with the concession cards. This will enable the trainers to get on with the training and not worry about the paper work and money. Emily Allison and Courtney Brunton are continuing with the Sprocket training and we thank them for their continued support. Training dates/times will be posted shortly for the new season. We ask that some of the parents come forward please and help with the Sprocket programme. It would also be nice to also see some of our Senior riders step up to the plate too. (Remember when you were sprockets?) 3
Power Gates Tuesday nights: This training is for competent riders 12 and over only. Joe Calkin runs this session with Jason Kelly. Any new riders 12 and under will be able to slot into the Level 2 training with Emily & Courtney Training: Jayden Davey has come on board and is carrying out training for riders. Details of the training are on our web site. Waikato Region BMX Waikato Region AGM was held on Thursday 24 th May 2017 Region Co Ordinator: Joe Calkin Vice Co Ordinator: Malcolm Mc Onie Secretary: Kylie Lupton Treasurer: Elaine Lucas As Joe Calkin was nominated by the Hamilton BMX Club to stand as a Board member for BMX NZ and was successful Malcolm Mc Onie has now taken over as the Waikato Region Co Ordinator. The Waikato Region would also like to ensure clubs are aware that if club members have any questions or queries the process they need to follow is: 1st - contact their club 2nd - if no results then contact the Region 3rd - if still no results contact BMX NZ ie; Dion This is to ease the load off Dion. He is getting s and questions asked of him where club level should easily be able to answer or sort for the club member. BMX NZ: Following the AGM the following persons were elected on to the BMX NZ Board for the 2017/2018 Season Chairman: Warren Boggiss (HN) Vice Chair: Steven Lloyd (CHC) Board Members: Joe Calkin (HN) Caroline Fox (GS) Jason Wadsworth Steve Adair (ALX) Treasurer:This is not a nominated position, but purely a voluntary position. Wendy Morrison of the Cambridge Club carries out the Treasurers duties for BMX NZ. Executive Officer: Dion Earnest is the Executive Officer for BMX NZ. This is a fulltime paid employment position. Mini Wheelers/Balance Bikes/Striders: We have more and more of our Mini Wheelers lining up to race on Wednesday nights. Parents we need help with these little ones please. Track: The club now has a lime pit, thanks to the donation of the concrete blocks donated from Hume s. Jarred Banks has been able to source a cover for the lime and this is now in place. 4
A big thank you to Kris Williamson on picking up and delivering the lime. Kris contacted his old employer, Heavy Metal Haulage, and used their Truck & Trailer to pick up the lime from Te Kuiti. This has resulted in a massive saving to the club. Thank you to all concerned. Working Bee: A working bee to get the track & club rooms ready for our new season, was to be held on the 13th August, but the rain came down once again. A call was put out for a working bee on Saturday 26 th and we had 9 turn up. We managed to get bits and pieces done and yes then the rain came down. If you have an hour or 2 spare you are more than welcome to go to the track at any time and weed the gardens. What s been happening? The Williamson family have packed their bags and left the country to become townies. Welcome back to the City. The club had a number of riders and their families that travelled to Rock Hill in the USA to compete in the 2017 UCI World BMX Championships. Many of them either went early or stayed on to visit American attractions. Lynda Ardern & Paul Lucas painted the inside of our Administration Building over the break, along with putting in the Health & Safety Sign at the gate. They also managed to get rid of all the rubbish from the Lock Up by the Netball Court. Paul & Heath Ardern used Heaths truck to get rid of the old Hamilton Sign to the metal merchants for the pricely sum of $ Lynda & Darryn Smith pulled out the cupboards along the back wall in the building and these have been shifted into the room where the shelving has been altered to fit all our helmets. Derrick Young has put another coat of paint on the Commentators tower. All the helmets have an alphabet letter on them and all the bikes will be registered for hire by the number on the number plate. Funding & Insurance: The club was fortunate to receive funding from WEL Energy Trust for bikes & helmets to add to our stock available for Hire. The bikes and helmets have all been purchased through Tim at ADU. Our insurance claim (from burglary) was accepted & paid. The money received has covered the cost for a new roller door & replacement bikes. Helmet Rule s Helmet Helmets must be of full face construction equipped with a visor of a minimum 10 centimetres. The helmet shell must be constructed as one piece design. Helmets with removable chin bars are not acceptable. The helmet strap must be securely fastened for the duration of the race. Open face helmets are not allowed. There are to be no modifications or additions to rider helmets that in the view of the Chief Commissaire could pose a danger to the rider or other riders. Any fixing for the use of cameras is to be fully removed when the equipment is not in use. When racing, from the start of any race until the point in time when a rider completes the race by crossing the finish line, if a rider s helmet is removed for any reason, that rider shall be considered as having abandoned the race in question and will be scored as Did Not Finish (DNF). 5
NQM s Please ensure you read the new update from BMX NZ with regards to NQM s National Qualifying Meetings (NQM) A flyer from BMX NZ was put out and you all should have received this, if not please contact the club and we will you a copy. Birthdays: Each of our registered riders receives an for their birthday. We hope you enjoy receiving these. Open Day 27 August 2017: The day was a bit cloudy but we carried on. Quite a number of people arrived to try out BMX for the first time. They all required Bikes & Helmets. With only 4 of us from the Club in attendance we were sure rushed off our feet. One little fellow came along on his bike with trainer wheels. Thanks to Celeste s persistence he can now ride a BMX bike right around the track. Thanks Celeste, wish I had a movie camera to record it. Mico NZ SUPERSeries Hot off the press from BMX NZ Details have been sent to all riders.
