4 PAGE 4 COLGATE vs SYRACUSE GAME 14 Mike Murphy Head Coach, Sixth Mike Murphy put together quite an impressive opening five years as head coach of Colgate Men s Lacrosse. Murphy already has posted a pair of Patriot League regular season championships, one postseason title and two trips to the NCAA tournament. In 2015, Colgate tied Navy for regular season honors and then swept to the Patriot League championship on the Midshipmen s home field. The Raiders knocked off Army 11-8 in the title game. Colgate in four seasons under Murphy has a 4534 record, including a mark against Patriot League competition. The Raiders under Murphy twice have finished the season ranked among the nation s top 15. Named to his first head coaching position on July 20, 2011, Murphy led the 2012 Raiders to a Patriot League regular-season title en route to the best campaign in program history. Colgate finished 14-4, including a 6-0 road mark, a 6-2 record against nationally-ranked oponents, and a win over undefeated No. 1 Massachusetts in the opening round of the NCAA tournament. The NCAA bid was Colgate s second postseason appearance and its first as an at-large recipient. The Raiders also secured their first tournament win and advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals for the first time in school history. The 2015 championship season saw the Raiders picked to finish fifth in the Patriot League before the year began but compile a 6-2 record that tied Navy for top honors. Colgate then swept past Bucknell and Army in the conference tournament for their first automatic berth since All-Star performers from the team were Matt Clarkson and Ryan Walsh, who both earned USILA All-American honorable mention nods in addition to their All-Patriot League First Team and Patriot League All-Tournament Team status. Walsh also was named MVP of the Patriot League tournament. For the season, Clarkson led the Raiders with 30 assists and 51 points, while Walsh topped the squad with 33 goals to finish his career with 139 goals and 203 points. Those numbers placed second in both categories in the Colgate records book. Murphy joined the Raiders after serving as an assistant coach at Army. In his seven seasons with the Black Knights, Army was consistently ranked among the best defensive teams both in the Patriot League and nationally under his mentorship, during which he also guided some of the most prolific goalkeepers in Academy history. Murphy joined Army after spending two seasons at Division III Denison in Granville, Ohio, where he was in charge of the Big Red s defensive unit, goalies and faceoff personnel. He also served as an assistant on Denison s football coaching staff and held a position in the Department of Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation as an instructor. Prior to his work at Denison, the University of New Hampshire graduate served as head assistant coach/defensive coordinator at Wingate from The Beverly, Mass., native helped the Bulldogs to their first NCAA Division II National Semifinal appearance in school history as the squad posted a record in Murphy s three seasons on its sideline, while 14 players garnered All-Deep South honors. His 2001 defensive unit finished the season among the national leaders in scoring defense (12th), winning percentage (7th) and goals-against average (10th). Murphy also enjoyed one-year stints at Pfeiffer and Merrimack after his graduation from the University of New Hampshire in the spring of He was a three-year UNH letterman. Murphy is a member of the USILA Division I AllAmerican Committee as well as the USILA Division I Poll Committee. He serves as chair of the Patriot League Men s Lacrosse Coaches Committee, and also serves on the IMLCA Division I Coaches Advisory Board. Murphy and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of two children: son, Colin; and daughter, Dylan Emma. Mike Murphy, pictured here with his wife, Jennifer, and their children, Colin and Dylan Emma, is in his sixth season as head coach of Colgate Men s Lacrosse. The Raiders earned bids to the 2012 and 2015 NCAA tournaments and have captured two Patriot League regular season crowns and one tournament title. But 18 Raider turnovers proved too much to overcome as Colgate lost to the Bearcats for the first time since Anthony Abbadessa, Will Blumenberg and first-year Griffin Brown all scored two goals apiece for the Raiders. Brown s were the first two of his collegiate career, while Blumenberg doubled his output after scoring his debut goal in the previous week s opener. First-year Nicky Petkevich also scored his first collegiate goal, and Chase Wittich added his second in as many weeks. Tom Moore s four goals and three from Sean Gilroy led the Bearcats in their season opener. Colgate s faceoff combination of Collin Orr (14-of-19) and Malcolm Feeney (2-of-4) combined to win 16 of the 23 draws. Orr s 14 faceoff wins were a career high. Binghamton outscored the Raiders just 5-4 in the middle two periods despite 13 Colgate turnovers during that stretch. That s because Burke made eight saves in the second quarter and five in the third on his way to 18. All three goals of Anthony Abbadessa s second hat trick of the season came during that 8-1 surge. First-year Nicky Petkevich got the run started with his second goal of the season followed by assists on goals by Sam Cleveland and Chase Wittich. The Raiders went into the locker room leading 8-5. Lehigh Colgate HAMILTON -- A five-goal Lehigh burst to end the first half backed up by a 16-4 edge in faceoffs proved to be the difference in an 11-5 Mountain Hawks victory over Colgate. Trailing 2-0, the Raiders got on the board 33 seconds into the second quarter as Peter Donato took a pass from Sam Cleveland and fired it past the Lehigh keeper. Griffin Brown followed three minutes later with an unassisted tally to knot the game at 2-2. The Mountain Hawks answered with their 5-0 run to close the half. Colgate scored the opening goal of the third quarter but could draw no closer than four goals the rest of the way. Conor Gaffney was the star for Lehigh, winning 16-of-20 faceoffs including a perfect 9-0 mark in the second half. Gaffney scooped up 12 ground balls to help the Mountain Hawks win that category, Chase Wittich, Brown and Anthony Abbadessa scored Colgate s second-half goals. Wittich buried his sixth goal of the season just over two minutes into the third quarter to pull the Raiders within 7-3. The Colgate defense kept Lehigh off the board for nearly the entire term until Lucas Spence put the Mountain Hawk advantage back to five at 8-3 with 2:44 left in the stanza. Brown and Anthony Abbadessa added fourth period goals, but the Mountain Hawks also scored two in the quarter and held on to claim the victory. Brown scored two goals for the third game in a row. Four different Raiders recorded multigoal games, with Matt Donovan and Griffin Brown tallying hat tricks to lead the Colgate offense. Brown helped the Raiders strike first with his seventh goal of the season just over a minute into the game before Donovan made it 2-0 Colgate 2½ minutes later. The Statesmen answered with back-to-back goals from Mason Burr and Tanner John to knot the score at 2-2 with just under seven minutes left in the quarter. Abbadessa spun his way around the Statesmen defense to net his team-leading 10th goal of the season at the 3:53 mark to put the Raiders back in front. Duncan Hoskinson added another Colgate tally with 11 seconds left on the first-quarter clock to give the Raiders a 4-2 lead heading into the second term. Hobart tied the game once again at 4-4 just over two minutes into the second stanza, but Sam Cleveland quickly answered with an unassisted goal at the 11:56 mark to give Colgate back the lead. Nicky Petkevich and Cleveland struck again before the halftime horn rang and the Colgate defense stood strong to hand the Raiders a 7-4 advantage heading into the locker room. Cornell completed its 12th straight win over Colgate with a 15-6 decision. Colgate was looking for its first win in the series since The Raiders led 2-0 early highlighted by goalkeeper Brandon Burke s first collegiate goal. The senior netminder fired one home on a bounce from about 60 yards away for the game s opening score. But Cornell rallied into the lead by halftime and then polished this one off in the third period by outscoring the Raiders 5-0. In addition to Burke, Colgate goal-scorers were Sam Cleveland, Griffin Brown, Nicky Petkevich, Chase Wittich and Will Blumenberg. Brown added an assist for the team s only multipoint game. Collin Orr, meanwhile, continued to shine in the faceoff-x. The junior specialist won 19-of-24 draws after entering the game No. 6 in the nation in faceoff percentage. The Black Knights won their seventh game in a row and emerged as the league s only unbeaten team at 4-0. But not before overcoming a heroic effort from Colgate goalkeeper Brandon Burke, who matched his career high with 18 saves. Eleven of those saves came in the second half as Colgate tried to hold on to a 6-5 halftime lead. Burke seemingly had every answer for the Army attack until David Symmes kicked off a closing three-goal surge that was the difference. Symmes scored with 4:35 remaining, followed by goals from Conor Glancy and Gunnar Miller in the final 2½ minutes to break the hearts of the Colgate faithful. Griffin Brown, Nicky Petkevich and Duncan Hoskinson all scored twice for the Raiders. Hoskinson s second of the game put Colgate in front 8-7 with 6:53 remaining. All three of Brown s goals came after intermission as the Raiders attempted to rally from an 8-1 deficit. It was the rookie midfielder s second hat trick of the season. The McLean, Virginia, native has scored at least one goal in each of the last nine games. Brandon Burke had another impressive showing in goal, making 14 saves many of the highlight variety. But Pat Spencer scored five goals and assisted on another to improve Loyola to 4-1 in the Patriot League. Alex McGovern and Zack Sirico added two goals apiece for the home side. The Greyhounds scored four consecutive goals in the first quarter and again in the second. The Raider lineup was handcuffed by the absence of defensive captain Jackson Patterson, who missed the game because of an illness. Will Blumenberg matched his career high with six ground balls. Chase Wittich and Tyler Schmarak also tied personal highs with three ground balls apiece. Schmarak in place of Patterson earned his second start of the year. Colgate used a lightning start and wire-to-wire defense to post a crucial 10-4 victory over Navy at Crown Field. The Raiders improved to 2-4 in the Patriot League and got the start they needed for this closing three-game conference stretch. Chase Wittich led the offense with a career-high four goals. He scored Colgate s first of the game midway in the opening quarter to spark a five-goal barrage. Both of Anthony Abbadessa s goals came in that firstquarter flurry, sandwiched around goals by Griffin Brown and Jack Stebbins as Colgate grabbed a 5-0 lead. The Midshipmen never pulled closer than three goals the rest of the way. Navy s four-goal output was its lowest of the season. It came on the heels of a three-game winning streak that saw the Mids score in double figures all three games. Colgate allowed its fewest goals since an 11-4 win over Binghamton early in the 2016 season. In the process, the Raiders snapped a three-game overall losing streak and evened their home record at 3-3. Colgate s defense held Navy scoreless for nearly 18½ minutes to start the game and then a combined 21-minute stretch over the third and fourth quarters. Colgate registered a season-high 11 caused turnovers. Will Blumenberg had a career-high three and Abbadessa and Strecker Backe contributed two apiece.
