That seemed to spark the visitors, who scored four unanswered goals in the quarter for a 5-4 halftime advantage. Anthony Abbadessa added two assists to his first collegiate hat trick for a five-point game. Matt Clarkson did him one better with a goal and five assists, while Cameron Williams and Chase Wittich scored two goals apiece. BURKE EARNS USILA, PATRIOT LEAGUE HONORS Colgate sophomore Brandon Burke picked up several honors for his performance in last Saturday s 9-5 win at No. 14 Bryant. He was named Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week, and then received national nods from both the USILA and Baltimore Sun newspaper. Burke, the Patriot League Rookie of the Year last season, picked up where he left off stopping 11 Bulldog shots and allowed five goals in his 60 minutes of work. The sophomore permitted only one fourth-quarter goal as Colgate broke open a 5-4 game with a four-goal final period. It was a good team win, Burke said. Our offense started clicking in the second half and the defense was meshing well. We held them to five goals, and we always want to keep them to around eight. Leo Stouros and John Baker did a great job for us, as always, and our younger guys on offense really stepped up. COLGATE TAKES DOWN NO. 14/19 BRYANT, 9-5 Balanced scoring and a whole-field defensive effort lifted Colgate to an impressive 9-5 win at No. 14/19 Bryant. Colgate Bryant SMITHFIELD, R.I. -- Balanced scoring and a whole-field defensive effort lifted Colgate to an impressive 9-5 win at No. 14 Bryant. It was Colgate s first road win over a ranked opponent since the 2012 Raiders toppled No. 1 Massachusetts in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Raiders bolted from a 2-2 halftime deadlock by scoring three times in the third quarter and four in the fourth. Jack Stebbins and Peter Donato scored twice and five other Raiders found the netting as Colgate toppled Bryant for the fourth straight year in a season-opener. Bryant entered the game as the nation s No. 14 team according to the lacrosse media, and No. 19 by USILA. Colgate was a No. 25 preseason selection by Inside Lacossse Magazine. The Raiders won by limited the Bulldogs to just eight clears in 14 attempts, and forcing 21 turnovers. Colgate held a shot advantage. The Raiders never trailed in this one, but it was tight throughout. The game was tied 2-2 at intermission, and Colgate led just 5-4 going to the fourth quarter. That s when the Raiders exploded for four consecutive goals to put the contest away. Sophomore Donato scored the first two goals of his collegiate career, and Stebbins had his first two-goal game. First-year Raiders Wittich and Abbadessa also scored their first career goals. Donato (midfield) and Abbadessa (attack) drew the first starting assignments of their Colgate careers, with Abbadessa obviously making the start in his collegiate debut. Colgate Vermont BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A six-goal flurry between the second and third quarters helped Colgate post a 10-8 win over Vermont. The Raiders trailed 4-1 after the first period before Ryan Walsh found the net for his second goal of the season. That seemed to spark the visitors, who scored four unanswered goals in the quarter for a 5-4 halftime advantage. Colgate continued its momentum to open the third quarter as Chase Wittich scored his second of the day and Anthony Abbadessa made it a hat trick for a 7-4 margin. Vermont drew within one goal but then Colgate s Matt Clarkson and Tyler Rigo tallied and the Raiders led 9-7 entering the fourth. Cameron Williams scored near the midway point of the final period and Colgate held on for its second straight win to open the season. Abbadessa added two assists to his first collegiate hat trick for a five-point game. Clarkson did him one better with a goal and five assists for a career-high six points, while Williams and Wittich scored two goals apiece. Colgate forced 10 Vermont turnovers in the middle two periods when the Raiders were turning a 4-1 deficit into a 9-7 lead. Shots favored Vermont, 37-33, as did ground balls by a count. Danehy picked up his first career goalkeeping victory after taking over for starter Brandon Burke, who injured himself late in the first quarter. Danehy finished with seven saves, including six in the pivotal second half. Colgate is 4-0 for the first time since the 1993 Raiders opened with five straight wins. The Raiders also are the only 2-0 team in the Patriot League. Ryan Walsh led a balanced Colgate attack with two goals and three assists. Anthony Abbadessa, Kevin Adams and Cameron Williams also scored two goals apiece in a close game throughout. Just like last week against Lafayette, the Raiders broke from the gate quickly. Colgate led 4-0 by the 8:18 mark of the first quarter as Walsh, Matt Clarkson, Abbadessa and Adams found the net. But Bucknell (2-2, 1-1 Patriot) rallied with five straight goals and a 5-4 lead midway in the second quarter.
