Holy Cross jumped out to an 11-7 lead and hung on for a win over the defending Patriot League champion. Patrick Corbett returned to the lineup and sparked Lehigh to a 10-9 win over Boston University, Bucknell scored in the final minute to edge Navy 8-7 and Colgate got off to a hot start and posted a win over Lafayette. In non-league matchups, Loyola Maryland knocked off #14 Towson in a midweek matinee and Army lost at #2 Syrause on Sunday night. Lehigh at Loyola in a 2014 Patriot League Championship Rematch There are many new participants on both sidelines, but plenty of talent will be on display Saturday when preseason favorite Loyola Marlyand hosts 2013 Patriot League champion Lehigh in a key early-season matchup. The Greyhounds lost their firstever League contest to start the 2015 campaign and will be trying to avoid falling to 0-2 when they face the Mountain Hawks. In other afternoon contests, Army hosts Lafayette, Bucknell welcomes Colgate and Navy travels to take on upstart Holy Cross. Boston University is the swing team this week and will play a non-league match at Vermont. Two More USILA Weekly Honors for Patriot League Student-Athletes After only two weeks, Patriot League players have garnered three of the four weekly men s lacrosse honors bestowed by the U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. One week after Colgate sophomore Goalkeeper Brandon Burke was tabbed as the USILA Defensive Player of the Week, Lehigh attack Dan Taylor and Loyola defender Pat Frazier swept the offensive and defensive awards for the week ending Feb. 15. Five PL Teams Appear in Latest Rankings A total of five Patriot League teams appear in the top 20 rankings chosen in the media and coaches polls. Army, Holy Cross and Loyola appear in both polls while Lehigh is #20 in the media balloting and Colgate #20 among the coaches. The Black Knights are #9 in the coaches poll and #14 according to the media voters, Holy Cross is #19 in both and the coaches have Loyola #14 while the media ranks them as #15. Loyola Maryland Tops Preseason Poll Defending Patriot League regular season and tournament champion Loyola Maryland tops the preseason poll as voted upon by the League coaches and sports information directors. The Greyhounds, who have yet to lose to a League opponent since becoming a member last season, totaled 123 points to outdistance Army (110) and Lehigh (109). Bucknell (81) and Colgate (75) were selected fourth and fifth, respectively, and Navy (56) tabbed for sixth. Boston University (46), Lafayette (26) and Holy Cross (22) round out the rest of the poll. Loyola received 12 first place votes with Lehigh receiving five and Army one. Follow the Action on ASN, CBS, ESPN3 and PLN Once again, the Patriot League will partner with Campus Insiders on the Patriot League Network, a streaming platform that will enable fans to watch League regular season and postseason events for free. In addition to roughly 50 Patriot League Men s Lacrosse contests available on PLN, another dozen will be broadcast by American Sports Network, CBS Sports Network and ESPN3. Crusaders senior attack Clay Haarmann and junior goalkeeper Michael Ortlieb were recognized in the voting of League SIDs and media members along with Lehigh junior defender Casey Eidenshink and Bucknell freshman Will Sands for their performances in victories over the weekend. Honorable mention went to Lehigh s Patrick Corbett and Matt Poillon, Loyola s Nikko Pontrello, Army s Austin Schultz, Colgate Connor Murphy and Bucknell s Sam Grinberg. CORVIAS OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK CLAY HAARMANN, HOLY CROSS Sr., A, Mendham, N.J. Haarmann led the Crusaders with four goals and scored the game-winner in a win Saturday at No. 8 Loyola (Md.). The win was Holy Cross first ever versus a nationally ranked team and they are also the the first team to defeat Loyola in Patriot League action. Haarmann now has nine career hat-tricks and four career game-winning goals. CORVIAS DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK CASEY EIDENSHINK, LEHIGH Jr., D, Wyncote, Pa. Eidenshink continued his strong play defensively for the Mountain Hawks, tallying three groundballs and a career-high four caused turnovers in a 10-9 win over Boston University. Led a Lehigh defense that didn t allow a goal for a stretch of 18:20 bridging the end of the first through beginning of the third quarter as the Mountain Hawks scored four straight goals to turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 lead. CORVIAS GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK MICHAEL ORTLIEB, HOLY CROSS Jr., GK, Newport Beach, Calif. Ortlieb tallied 13 saves as the Crusaders defeated No. 8 Loyola for the first win in program history over a ranked team. The junior made a save with two seconds remaining to prevent the Greyhounds from netting the equalizer after mounting a furious comeback. CORVIAS ROOKIE OF THE WEEK WILL SANDS, BUCKNELL Fr., A, Locust Valley, N.Y. Sands handed out three assists on Saturday as Bucknell rallied for an 8-7 win at Navy in its Patriot League opener. All three of the freshman s assists came during the Bison five-goal fourth quarter as he set up Connor O Hara, Ryan Joseph and Sean Doyle in a 4-0 run that turned a 5-3 deficit into a 7-5 advantage. HONORABLE MENTION PATRICK CORBETT, LEHIGH Sr., A, Burlington, Ontario Corbett scored a career-high five goals, including the game-winning goal with 2:37 remaining, in the Mountain Hawks 10-9 win over Boston University. NIKKO PONTRELLO, LOYOLA MARYLAND Sr., A, Marlton, N.J. Pontrello averaged 5.5 points per game as the Greyhounds split games with No. 14 Towson and a loss to Holy Cross. AUSTIN SCHULTZ, ARMY Jr., D, Lancaster, Pa. Schultz held 2014 Tewaaraton Award nominee Kevin Rice to three points, including one empty net goal, in a 12-9 loss to No. 2/3 Syracuse. CONNOR MURPHY, COLGATE Jr., D, Bridgewater, N.J. Murphy led the Colgate defense with five groundballs and also caused a turnover in a victory over Lafayette. SAM GRINBERG, BUCKNELL Sr., GK, New York, N.Y. Grinberg made 10 saves while yielding only seven goals (.588 save percentage) in Bucknell s 8-7 win at Navy. MATT POILLON, LEHIGH Sr., GK, Mount Sinai, N.Y. Poillon made a season-high 15 saves, including one with 42 seconds remaining, to preserve the Mountain Hawks 10-9 win over Boston University.
