BLACK KNIGHT REWIND - #15/15 BUCKNELL 8, #13/14 ARMY 7 (APRIL 9, WEST POINT, N.Y.) A battle of top-15 teams lived up to the hype but it was No. 15/15 Bucknell surviving an 8-7 decision against No. 13/14 in front of nearly 3,000 fans on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium. The Bison led 5-4 at the half and held on in the waning seconds as made it a one-goal game with 56 seconds remaining but could not come up with the equalizer. Sophomore attackman Garrett Thul matched a season-high four goals to lead the Black Knights. Senior attackman Jeremy Boltus tallied three assists, including two on Thul scores. Boltus final helper came on a Conor Hayes goal with 56 seconds remaining, pulling the Black Knights within 8-7. Navy is the least penalized team in the conference, averaging just three penalties per outing. ALBERICI SOUND BITES THIS WEEK... (Ref.: Looking back at the loss to Bucknell) It was a hard-fought game on both sides and lived up to its tradition of being a play here or a play there. Bucknell made them and deserved the victory. I was really proud of our guys, particularly in the second half. They played with a lot of fire that I thought would have been deserving of a victory. We re going to put this one behind us quickly and focus on the next one. (Ref.: Playing in Navy-Marine Corps Stadium) It s a special stadium for Navy to play in, much like Michie (Stadium) is to us. We haven t had a lot of great success playing there in recent years, but I think our guys are excited and motivated. We ve played in the Day of Rivals and at the Carrier Dome in the last couple of years, so I don t anticipate much issue with the stadium itself. (Ref.: The significance of -Navy) It s a great honor to represent the United States Military Academy and the. It s not something our guys take lightly. It s something we discuss a lot. It s not just special for us, but it s for everybody. When you play Navy, you do it with a heightened sense of awareness from the community. It makes it even that much more special. The way we honor that is by going out there playing at a very high level with tremendous emotion and effort. BOLTUS NAMED MID-SEASON FIRST TEAM ALL-AMERICAN Senior attackman Jeremy Boltus was named a mid-season first team All-American by Inside Lacrosse last week. Boltus ranks second in the nation in both scoring (4.6 points per game) and assists (2.9 assists per game). Johnny Walker (West Point 06) was the last to achieve the feat following the 2005 season. AROUND THE PATRIOT LEAGUE No. 12/12 Bucknell and No. 16/16 Colgate are the first two teams to punch their tickets to the 2011 Patriot League Tournament. 4 THE LAST MEETING - MAY 2, 2010 NAVY 8 #18 ARMY 11 MICHIE STADIUM WEST POINT, N.Y. - junior goalkeeper Tom Palesky was named tournament MVP after leading the Black Knights to an 11-8 victory over Navy to win the 2010 Patriot League Men s Lacrosse Championship at Michie Stadium. Junior attackman Jeremy Boltus garnered all-tournament honors after scoring five points on two goals and three assists as won its first-ever Patriot League Tournament crown. After falling to Navy in the championship game in 2005 and 2006, the third time was the charm as the Black Knights secured their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2005 and 16th overall. Trailing 4-3 with 5:20 left in the second quarter, broke the game open with a decisive 5-0 run to lead 8-4 with 5:55 left in the third quarter. Navy (7-8) scored two unanswered to cut the deficit to two, 8-6, with 12:56 left in the fourth quarter, but would finish the game on a 3-2 run, while building a edge in ground balls to seal the victory. Palesky was credited with 12 saves after compiling 17 in Friday s 9-7 semifinal victory over Bucknell. He joined Boltus, senior attackman Tyler Seymour and junior defenseman Bill Henderson on the all-tournament team. After starting the season with a 1-4 record, rebounded to win nine of its next 10 games, and will take a seven-game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament. Sunday s victory also marked the first time the Black Knights ever beat Navy twice in one season after also taking a 7-6 decision two weeks ago at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Navy scored the first two goals of the game before answered with two of its own to make the score 2-2 after the first quarter of play. Senior attackman Brendan Connors shook off an defender and scored from close range 49 seconds into the game, before junior attackman Andy Warner did the same to put the Mids up 2-0 at the 9:56 mark. Boltus would get into the action after grabbing a rebound on the Navy crease and scoring with 4:39 to play in the quarter, before Thul converted an 18-yard rocket from the right side to knot the game back up. The squads traded goals twice in the second quarter. Navy senior midfielder Patrick Moran would bounce home a tally at 12:46, before midfielder Rob McCallion would finish off a Boltus feed for a man-up goal at 7:42. Midshipmen senior midfielder Joe Lennon would score a nice goal in transition at at 5:20, before sophomore midfielder Devon Lynch started the Black Knights run with a score off a pass from senior midfielder Andrew Maisano with 3:40 on the clock. Boltus hit a wide-open freshman attackman Garrett Thul on the Navy crease for the first of his four goals on the day to give a 5-4 lead at 2:11 that it would take into intermission. The Black Knights would keep hammering away in the third quarter as senior attackman Tyler Oates converted a lowlining rip from 11 yards away at the 12:46 mark, before Maisano ran in on goal after a strong dodge on the left side to make it a 7-4 lead at 7:18. McCallion hit an open Seymour on the Navy crease for a man-up conversion with 5:55 left in the period for the four-goal lead. Navy took advantage of an failure to advance foul and quickly score as senior LSM Zach Schroeder would score in transition with 1:43 to play in the third to halt an 18:37 scoring drought for the Midshipmen. Navy would score again to start the fourth as Connors took a pass from behind the goal from sophomore midfielder Nikk Davis and beat Palesky to pull the visitors within two, 8-6, with 12:56 to play in the game. Thul scored what was perhaps the biggest goal of the game to halt the Navy run, backing down a defender 15 yards in front of the Navy goal before turning and unleashing a monster shot into the top-right corner of the goal at 9:09. O Sullivan would follow with another long-range shot at 8:12 to put Navy back in a four-goal hole that it could not dig out of. Navy freshman midfielder Evan Sullivan would find the net with 2:23 on the clock, before Moran scored with 1:51 remaining to cut to a two-goal deficit, but the Black Knights salted the game away with two huge possessions that included an empty-net goal by Boltus with 11 seconds to play to seal the win. Mac Diange, who is responsible for s offense, is the longest tenured assistant coach at West Point and is in the midst of his 22nd season. Ted Georgalas has volunteered as an assistant coach in each of the last two seasons. Georgalas was named the 2003 Major League Lacrosse Coach of the Year after leading the New Jersey Pride to a pair of playoff berths in 2002 and BLACK KNIGHTS ON THE TUBE The lacrosse team will be featured on national television at least twice this spring as the Black Knights contests versus Navy (April 16) and Johns Hopkins (May 6) will appear on CBS Sports Network, formerly CBS College Sports Network, as part of the Patriot League s Game of the Week package. He mailed the flag that was carried on a patrol in honor of the 2010 lacrosse team to head coach Joe Alberici in hopes you could have the team run onto the field with it to honor those soldiers from the 1-17th who made the ultimate sacrifice for everything this flag represents. Tell the men they represent more than just the Black, Gold and Gray - they represent everyone who is fighting under the Red, White and Blue.

7 CLASS ACT Starting sophomore defenseman Brendan Buckley and junior attackman James MacGibbon both eclipsed the 4.0 grade-point average mark in the fall, making the pair two of 10 players to make the Dean s List (3.0 GPA or higher). Buckley posted a team-high GPA in Engineering Management, while MacGibbon managed a GPA majoring in Systems Engineering. Eight other players made the Dean s List to include: Jay Laing (3.782), Matt Marasco (3.047), Charlie Sauter (3.710), Shane Smith (3.092), Derek Sipperly (3.024), Andrew Boyd (3.922), Matt Mezer (3.099) and Brad Weiss (3.029). OUT OF AFRICA senior midfielder Brandon Butler took the academic year off from the lacrosse team and West Point to do a mission and live and work for six months in the African Republic of Tanzania. Butler taught multiple subjects, including English and math, at a small university located three hours in from the coastal city of Dar es Salaam, the largest city in the country, while also traveling and going on safari throughout the region, located in the Southeastern portion of Africa. The day after he left, his paperwork was submitted to be admitted back into West Point upon his return. Butler has been a mainstay at the wing on s faceoff unit this season. He has played in 10 games, totaled four points (1G, 3A) and 28 ground balls. IN KEEPING WITH TRADITION lacrosse is a program steeped in tradition and this year s team is no different. Along with a handful of other team traditions, here are a couple of note... MAY I QUOTE YOU ON THAT? - starts every practice with a quote, read by a quote private. The quote private is a freshman on the team whose job is to come up with and memorize a motivational quote of the day and read it before each and every practice. The tradition dates back to Nick Bilotta (West Point 02), who started the tradition as a plebe in The 2011 quote private is David Tarsa. OUT TO LUNCH - Whether it s during a game or simply at practice, an old-fashioned tin lunch box can be found on the sidelines. A tradition started by head coach Joe Alberici in 2008, the lunch box symbolizes hard work and toughness and the coaching staff uses it as a reward. Each week, the player whom the coaching staff deems practice player of the week will have his number displayed on the outside of the lunchbox as a symbol for a job well done that week. The keeper of the lunch box is determined at the start of the year by the player who owned the post previously. The first lunch box keeper was Bill Henderson in Tom Dalton followed in 09 and Brendan Buckley in 10. This years lunch box keeper is freshman defenseman John Burk. All four years, the lunch box has been kept and guarded by a defenseman. TICKETS, TICKETS, TICKETS will play six of its regular season games at home this year. Season ticket packages can be purchased for $25 (adults) and $19 (senior citizens, youth). Single-game tickets are also available and are $6 for adults and $4 for youth/senior citizens/groups of 10 or more. All ticket orders can be placed online at or by calling TIX-ARMY. Fans may also visit the Holleder Center ticket office during its regular hours, Monday-Friday (8 a.m.-5 p.m.), or one hour prior to any home contest. UP NEXT concludes the regular season portion of its Patriot League slate when the team travels to Worcester, Mass., to take on Holy Cross (1-10, 1-4 PL) on Saturday, April 23, at noon. In a series dating back to 1991, the Black Knights are 19-0 against the Crusaders. WEATHER BUG began holding official practices on Jan. 10. In the midst of a winter season that has not been kind to the Northeast region, the Black Knights have utilized both Michie Stadium and the Foley Athletic Center throughout February. With temperatures hovering around the 30-degree mark and freezing portions of the Michie Stadium turf, both of the team s scrimmages were forced to take place inside Foley. The state-of-the-art athletic facility, completed in 2009, features a full 100-yard turf field that is utilized by several of s varsity teams. SIGN ME UP... FOR THREE MORE When a cadet graduates from West Point, each owes the nation five years of active duty service and three years in the reserves. Seniors Tom Palesky, Brandon Butler and Pat Mulholland recently increased their service to eight years of active duty in the U.S. upon graduation (May 21, 2011). Each did so in order to secure Infantry as their respective branches. (See page 8 for a complete listing of all Firstie branches and posts). I was completely okay with adding three more years to my service because it helped me get Infantry as my branch, Palesky explained. Infantry interested me the most of all the combat arms branches, and it is what I wanted to do after I graduate. Eight years active duty is definitely something I wanted to do and I am extremely excited about it. ARMY SINGLE-SEASON RECORD BOOK POINTS 1. Specific developmental goals are addressed through several fully coordinated and integrated programs. A challenging Academic Program that consists of a core of 31 courses provides a balanced education in the arts and sciences. This core curriculum establishes the foundation for elective courses that permit cadets to explore in greater depth a field of study or an optional major. All cadets receive a Bachelor of Science degree, which is designed specifically to meet the intellectual requirements of a commissioned officer in today s. The Physical Program at West Point includes both physical education classes and competitive athletics. Every cadet participates in an intercollegiate, club or intramural level sport each semester. This rigorous physical program contributes to the mental and physical fitness that is required for service as an officer in the. Cadets learn basic military skills, including leadership, through a demanding Military Program which begins on their first day at West Point. Most military training takes place during the summer, with new cadets undergoing Cadet Basic Training - or Beast Barracks - the first year, followed by Cadet Field Training at nearby Camp Buckner the second year. Cadets spend their third and fourth summers serving in active units around the world; attending advanced training courses such as airborne, air assault or northern warfare; or training the first and second year cadets as members of the leadership cadre. Military training is combined with military science instruction to provide a solid military foundation for officership. Moral-ethical development occurs throughout the formal programs as well as a host of activities and experiences available at the Military Academy. These include formal instruction in the important values of the military profession, voluntary religious programs, interaction with staff and faculty role models, and a vigorous guest speaker program. The foundation of the ethical code at West Point is found in the Academy s motto, Duty, Honor, Country. Cadets also develop ethically by adhering to the Cadet Honor Code, which states A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do. Admission is open to all young men and women, and is extremely competitive. Candidates must receive a nomination from a member of Congress or from the Department of the. They are then evaluated on their academic, physical and leadership potential. Those candidates who are fully qualified receive appointments to the Academy. WHERE THE FIRSTIES ARE HEADED... 13 Joe Alberici enters his sixth season at the helm of the lacrosse program. Following in the footsteps of some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, Alberici roams the same sideline where Hall of Fame legends such as Jack Emmer, Ace Adams, Dick Edell and F. Morris Touchstone, once tread. A former assistant to Emmer, Alberici returned to the shores of the Hudson River after a nine-year stint as an assistant coach at Duke where he helped the Blue Devils tighten their grip as one of the nation s premier lacrosse programs. Alberici became the 10th head coach in s storied 90-year history in 2006, and was tasked to fill the big shoes left by his mentor, Emmer, who retired as college lacrosse s all-time winningest coach in Alberici led to its first-ever Patriot League tournament title last season, defeating Navy, 11-8, in the championship contest. The Black Knights, who compiled a 6-0 conference record during the regular season for the first time, went on to upset No. 2-ranked Syracuse in the first round of the NCAA tournament. Alberici helped mold Garrett Thul into the national Rookie of the Year as the attackman set plebe records in goals and points. Alberici was named the 2008 Patriot League Coach of the Year after leading to a 9-6 record, including a 5-1 conference mark which was good enough to clinch the Patriot League regular season title and top-seed for the postseason tournament, hosted at Michie Stadium. Five Black Knights garnered All-Patriot League honors, including senior Adam Fullerton, who won his second-straight conference Goalkeeper of the Year award on his way to third-team All- America honors. Ranked as high as No. 8 during the season, finished the season No. 19 in the final USILA National Coaches Poll on the heels of a scoring defense that only allowed 7.13 goals per game, to rank sixth nationally. In 2007, Alberici guided the Black Knights through a roller coaster season, highlighted by a 6-1 start and an upset of No. 2 Syracuse in the Carrier Dome that marked the first time the Orange had ever lost at home in February. Ranked as high as No. 8 in the national polls during the campaign, the Black Knights would go on to qualify for their third-straight Patriot League Tournament to finish the season. His stalwart defense allowed just four opponents to score over 10 goals en route to a 7.80 goals against average that ranked 10th in the country. Alberici also watched four of his players garner all-conference honors. In his first season as head coach, Alberici led the Black HEAD COACH JOE ALBERICI FIFTH SEASON - ALFRED 91 Years School W L Pct. Two of his players attackman John Walker and defenseman Matt Luyster capped their careers with Honorable Mention All- America honors while leading the squad to its ninth-straight season with at least eight victories against one of the toughest schedules in the country. Alberici s tenure at Duke coincided with the Blue Devils rise to national prominence, which culminated in their magical run to the Division I title contest in 2005, a game in which they fell 9-8 to top-ranked Johns Hopkins. Ranked second in the nation behind the Blue Jays for much of the spring, Duke forged a remarkable 17-3 ledger and established an NCAA record for victories in a single season. Two of Duke s losses were one-goal defeats at the hands of Johns Hopkins, including an double-overtime loss at JHU s Homewood Field in early April. Alberici s duties at Duke included recruiting director, assisting with the daily administration of the program, serving as the Blue Devils defensive coordinator and coaching the team s goalkeepers. After serving as offensive coordinator and working with Duke s man-up offense during his first eight years, he assumed the roles of defensive coordinator and coach of the man-down defense during his final season. He was promoted to associate head coach in During Alberici s nine years on head coach Mike Pressler s staff, the Blue Devils forged a sparkling (.671) record, made seven appearances in the NCAA Tournament including a run of six straight postseason trips between 1997 and 2002 and captured a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference titles (2001 and 2002). The Blue Devils reached the Final Four for the first time in 1997, Alberici s initial year in Durham, before embarking on their remarkable postseason run in Under Alberici s watchful eye, Duke ranked second in the nation in scoring defense, surrendering just 6.91 goals per game. Alberici spent the 1995 and 1996 seasons at West Point, and helped the Black Knights to a 10-5 showing and an NCAA appearance in won its final five games that season, including victories over Hofstra, Navy and Rutgers, to earn the Academy s 12th postseason berth. A 1991 graduate of Alfred University, Alberici was a two-time lacrosse All-American in 1990 and 1991 and also garnered Academic All-America accolades as a senior. A four-year starter at attack, he set six school scoring records and led the Saxons to winning seasons in 1989, 1990 and A three-time team captain, Alberici led the entire nation, including all three divisions, in assists as a junior, garnering 78 helpers in 17 contests for a 4.6 assist per-game average. Following graduation, Alberici remained at his alma mater for two years in the role of graduate assistant coach, earning his master s degree in education in He accepted his first head coaching assignment soon thereafter when he was named to the top post at SUNY Oneonta. In 1994, the Dragons forged an 8-6 record and established a single-season school record for victories, earning Alberici Empire Lacrosse League Coach of the Year laurels. It was on the heels of that spectacular season that Alberici made the move to West Point. A native of Auburn, N.Y., Alberici was inducted into the Auburn High School Hall of Fame in 2008, joining his older brother, John and father, Gino, as enshrinees. In his present role as the face of s storied program, Alberici has assumed control of a club that remains intertwined with the history of collegiate lacrosse. In 93 seasons, the Black Knights have amassed 716 victories, trailing only Johns Hopkins, Syracuse, Navy and Hobart in alltime wins at the Division I level. has produced eight national champions, while 12 men associated with the program (eight players and four coaches) have been enshrined in the National Lacrosse Foundation Hall of Fame. Alberici served a term as an assistant coach for the U.S. National Lacrosse Team at the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships in Manchester, England, helping the Americans to the gold medal. In 2007, he was also appointed to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Board of Directors, the sport s national governing body. Alberici and his wife, Petra, reside at West Point with their son, Maximus, and daughter, Isabella. ALL-TIME ARMY HEAD COACHES Coach Years Seasons Record Win% Mr. O Rourke Talbot Hunter M.J.
