Center Valley, Pa. Berths in the 2012 Patriot League Men s Lacrosse Tournament are sure to be wrapped up Saturday, as all three League contests on the day have postseason implications. Navy visits Army Saturday at noon on CBS Sports Network in the annual tilt between the academy rivals. The Mids are looking to return to the League Tournament after missing it for the first time last season, while Army is attempting to avoid missing the fourteam playoff for the first time since the bracket s inaugural 2004 season. For either team, the mission is simple: win and they re in the Patriot League Tournament. A loss would put their destiny in the hands of other teams. Navy is coming off a 13-6 loss last Friday at No. 12 Maryland. The Midshipmen trailed the Terps 6-5 at halftime, but Maryland overwhelmed Navy in the second half and finished with 52 shots for the game. Navy goalkeeper RJ Wickham had perhaps his finest game as a Mid, stopping 18 shots and finishing the game with a.581 save percentage. Six different players scored for Navy. The Mids have lost two straight overall entering Saturday s tilt at Army. The Black Knights, who have won the last two rivalry games with Navy at West Point, lifted themselves back into the postseason discussion with a 6-5 double-overtime win at Bucknell last weekend. Devin Lynch scored his second career double-overtime gamewinner. His first lifted Army to a win over Syracuse in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. Colgate plays at home for the final time before the Patriot League Tournament Saturday when it hosts Lafayette. The Raiders will clinch a bid to the tournament with a victory, while Lafayette needs a victory to keep its own playoff hopes alive. The third of three League battles Saturday takes place at 7 p.m. when Bucknell visits Lehigh. Depending on Colgate s Jeff Ledwick Standings as of Patriot League Overall W-L PCT. Even if that s the case, the contest is of huge important in the race to decide seeding and hosting responsibilities. One team that can t be left out of the conversation is Lafayette. The Leopards snapped a seven-game skid with an impressive 8-4 win at Holy Cross, and suddenly they find themselves back in the fringe of the postseason discussion. Saturday s 1 p.m. game at Colgate is a must-win affair for the Leopards. Should they emerge victorious, they ll have a close eye on the Bucknell-Lehigh tilt later in the evening. Their postseason hopes will be strengthened with a Bison victory, but Lafayette would still need a win next week against Lehigh to stay in the hunt. There was a pair of non-league contests Tuesday evening. No. 18/18 Bucknell put forth perhaps its most dominating defensive performance of the season and Billy Eisenreich provided the necessary offense in the Bison s 8-3 victory at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. On the whole, the League went 1-1 on Tuesday night as Holy Cross fell for the fifth straight time, dropping a 17-3 defeat to No. 19/19 Bryant in Worcester, Mass. As is the case for just about every rivalry, records can be thrown out the window, and neither side requires any extra motivation. But just to include a little more drama, the game does have the added bonus of having significant postseason implications for both teams. Last Weekend s Results Create Three-Way Jam There are two guarantees about Patriot League lacrosse. It s never easy, and usually it s unexpected. There was a double dose of drama last Saturday with two games going to overtime. Army went into Lewisburg, Pa., and snapped Bucknell s 11-game home win streak against Patriot League opponents and came away with a 6-5 double-overtime victory on Devin Lynch s game-winner. Up in Hamilton, N.Y., Colgate s top-rated offense went toe-to-toe with Lehigh s No. 1-ranked defense, and again overtime was needed before the Raiders emerged with an win. Suddenly there was a three-way tie for first between Bucknell, Colgate and Lehigh, while Army climbed back into a very tight race. Meanwhile in Worcester, Mass., Lafayette s 8-4 win at Holy Cross meant the Leopards have a pulse for the postseason entering the last two weekends before the Patriot League Tournament. Tournament Bids Will Be Determined This Weekend No fewer than two and as many as all four bids to the Patriot League Tournament will be determined on Saturday. With games at noon, 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., everybody will have the chance to watch the dominoes fall one by one as the day unfolds. Navy at Army: Win and You re In Beyond the fact that it s on national television or that it s the 91st all-time meeting, it s a critical game for postseason prospects when Army and Navy hit the field at Michie Stadium Saturday at noon on CBS Sports Network. It s the first of three big Patriot League contests on the day, and one bid to the Patriot League Tournament will be secured. Both Army and Navy control their own postseason destinies, as the winner will clinch the first of the four tournament bids. The loser is in deep trouble. Navy will have completed Patriot League play, while Army can still get in with a win over Holy Cross next week, but a postseason bid would not be guaranteed. Fate is in Colgate s Hands Jeff Ledwick scored the game-tying goal late in the fourth quarter and found the back of the net again in overtime to lift Colgate to a thrilling victory over Lehigh last Saturday in Hamilton, N.Y. Now the Raiders, who are locked in a threeway tie for first at 3-1 with Bucknell and the Mountain Hawks, can clinch a berth in the Patriot League Tournament for the second straight season with a victory Saturday over visiting Lafayette. Alive, But Needing Loads of Help Reigning Patriot League Rookie of the Week Brian Bock came up big last week for Lafayette, scoring twice and logging four points as the Leopards won 8-4 at Holy Cross on Saturday. The win was Lafayette s first in League play this season, and with a pair of games left with teams ahead of them in the standings in Colgate and Lehigh, the Leopards are still in a position to make the Patriot League Tournament, though the deck is stacked against them. Both of their last two games are must-win affairs, and even then the Leopards could find themselves on the outside looking in depending on tiebreakers. Bucknell-Lehigh Winner Gets a Bid, Too The last of the three Patriot League contests Saturday is just like the Army-Navy game in that the winner is guaranteed a berth to the Patriot League Tournament. Two teams coming off one-goal losses last weekend go head-to-head when Bucknell visits Lehigh at 7 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa. The winner is in the Patriot League Tournament, while the loser, at the very least, will still control their postseason fate entering the final weekend of the season. Don t Want to Back In, But... Bucknell and Lehigh could qualify for the Patriot League Tournament Saturday without recording a victory. If Army defeats Navy and Colgate holds serve at home against Lafayette, then Bucknell is guaranteed a berth. If Navy wins at Army and Colgate wins over the Leopards, then it s Lehigh who secures a postseason bid before it even takes the field Saturday night. Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders

Patriot League Notebook Two Down... Four In? Depending on how the first two games go on Saturday, we could know our field of four for the Patriot League Tournament even before Bucknell and Lehigh hit the field for warmups in Bethlehem, Pa. If Army and Colgate both win Saturday afternoon, then Bucknell and Lehigh are in the Patriot League Tournament regardless of the outcome of their game later that night. The result, however, still carries significance in determining who will host the four-team tournament. Still Ranked While last week s results might ve dropped a few teams in the national rankings, three League squads remain in both major national polls as of Monday. Lehigh began the week as one of five teams with 10 victories and is situated at No. 11 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and the Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Top 20. Following Saturday s win over Lehigh, Colgate moved up to 14th in the coaches rankings and 12th in the media poll, while Bucknell sits at 18th in both top 20s. Army received votes in both polls, while Navy received votes in the media balloting. Bucknell s Aiming for its Own History The Patriot League has not had a repeat champion in each of the last four years. The Bison doubled as regular-season and tournament champions a year ago, going 6-0 in League play and holding serve by winning two tournament games in Lewisburg, Pa., to earn the League s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. There has not been a repeat League champion since Navy s four-year run from From , the Mids won or shared a piece of the regular-season championship as well. Thul Inches into Top 10 Army junior sniper Garrett Thul scored twice in the Black Knights 6-5 double-overtime win Saturday at Bucknell, giving him 31 goals on the season. Having entered the spring with 83 career markers, he has inched into the Patriot League s all-time top 10 with 114 tallies. It s the second straight season and third time in the last four years a student-athlete has cracked the League s all-time top 10 in goals. Lafayette s Tom Perini finished his four-year career in 2011 with 127 goals, tying him for fourth on the list. Colgate s Peter Baum has 106 career goals, putting him eight behind Thul. Patriot League on CBS Sports Network CBS Sports Network, the official broadcast partner of the Patriot League, has several men s lacrosse games on the docket in The slate began with Lehigh s 9-4 win at Navy on March 30, and continued with Army s 6-5 win at Bucknell Saturday in a double-overtime thriller. The schedule continues with Navy at Army Saturday at noon. Two more regular season contests will air on CBS Sports Network next week, as Colgate visits Bucknell Friday, April 20 at 7 p.m., and Navy hosts Johns Hopkins in a non-league tilt Saturday, April 21 at noon. In addition, CBS Sports Network will televised all three games of the Patriot League Tournament for the fourth consecutive year. Dave Ryan will provide the play-by-play for all contests, with either Steve Panarelli or Evan Washburn providing the analysis. Record-Tying Output Two student-athletes have met the Patriot League record for goals in a game this season, with it occurring twice in two weeks. Colgate s Peter Baum first achieved the standard with eight markers in the Raiders walloping of Robert Morris March 3, and Bucknell s Todd Heritage matched it in the Bison s victory over Hobart a week later. Lehigh s Mark Duncan was the first to score eight goals in a game in The record has been matched five times since, including four times in the last three seasons. Bucknell s Billy Eisenreich is not to be left out of the offensive parade, as he matched a school record with 11 points in The Bison s triumph against Robert Morris on March 20. Seeking the Tewaaraton Trophy A total of nine student-athletes in the Patriot League were named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List in men s lacrosse in February, and a 10th was added Wednesday. Holy Cross junior James Kennedy was one of nine additions made Wednesday to the list, which was originally unveiled in February. Army, Bucknell, Lehigh and Navy each have two student-athletes named to the watch list, while Colgate boasts one. Kennedy joins senior Tim Henderson and junior Garrett Thul from Army; senior Billy Eisenreich and junior Kyle Feeney from Bucknell; junior Peter Baum from Colgate; juniors Dante Fantoni and Ryan Snyder from Lehigh; and senior Nikk Davis and sophomore Sam Jones from Navy. Both of this year s preseason major award winners in the Patriot League are on the list. Baum was the coaches and SIDs selection as the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, while Henderson was named the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a wellrounded education. Patriot League Weekly Awards ( ) Offensive Player of the Week JEFF LEDWICK, COLGATE Sr., M, Weston, Conn. Ledwick scored the game-tying goal with 1:43 to go in regulation and netted the game-winner at the 2:07 mark of overtime to lift Colgate to an victory against then-no. 7 Lehigh Saturday afternoon in Hamilton, N.Y. The senior from Weston, Conn., finished the game with three goals and four points. He opened the scoring just 1:23 into the game to give the Raiders the early 1-0 lead and assisted on Matt Baker s goal in the second quarter that tied the contest at 4-all. Ledwick has 20 goals and 28 points on the season, both career-bests for the nation s top-scoring offense. Defensive Player of the Week BRENDAN BUCKLEY, ARMY Jr., D, Massapequa, N.Y. Buckley posted five caused turnovers and picked up one ground ball in perhaps Army s biggest and most important defensive effort of the season in a 6-5 double-overtime victory at No. 15/13 Bucknell Saturday afternoon. He led all players in caused turnovers and held Bucknell s Billy Eisenreich to just a goal and two points. Eisenreich was ranked second in the country in assists and third in points in last week s NCAA statistics release. Goalkeeper of the Week ZACH PALMIERI, ARMY Sr., GK, Syracuse, N.Y. Palmieri made 10 saves, none bigger than the two he made in the final 23 seconds of regulation in a game Army eventually won 6-5 on Devin Lynch s game-winner in double overtime. Palmieri faced 34 Bucknell shots and recorded a.667 save percentage. He also accounted for four ground balls and one caused turnover. Rookie of the Week BRIAN BOCK, LAFAYETTE Fr., A, Collegeville, Pa. Bock extended his point-scoring streak to 11 games last week, picking up points in both contests. His biggest showing came Saturday with two goals and two assists for four points, lifting the Leopards to a critical 8-4 victory at Holy Cross. That win keeps Lafayette s hopes alive for a Patriot League Tournament berth, though they ll need victories against Colgate and Lehigh in the next two weeks to stay in the hunt. Bock totaled three goals and five points for the week, including a marker in Tuesday s overtime loss to Marist. Honorable Mentions ROB GRABHER, COLGATE Jr., FOS, Glen Head, N.Y. Grabher won 20-of-25 at the face-off `X and picked up 11 ground balls in Colgate s overtime victory against Lehigh. Grabher went 15-of-17 head-to-head against Ryan Snyder, an All-League performer from a year ago and a 2012 Tewaaraton Trophy candidate. KYLE FEENEY, BUCKNELL Jr., GK, Greenwich, Conn. Feeney made 13 saves and logged a.684 save percentage in Saturday s 6-5 double-overtime loss to Army. He was superb in goal, and made two huge saves late in regulation and another on a point-blank opportunity in the first overtime from Tim Henderson. LUKAS MIKELINICH, LEHIGH So., D, Dix Hills, N.Y. Mikelinich marked Colgate s Peter Baum, who entered the weekend as the nation s leading goal scorer, and held him to just one goal and two points. JACKSON PLACE, BUCKNELL So., D, Wayne, Pa. 10 2012 Patriot League Men s Lacrosse Contact James Greene, Assistant Media Relations Director Phone jgreene@patriotleague.com witter.com/patriotleague acebook.com/patriotleague.com/patriotvideo Patriot League Tiebreaking Procedure for Men s Lacrosse Non-League contests completed before the Monday prior to the Championship will be included in the tie-breaker formula, if necessary. Any non-league contest played on or after the Monday prior to the Championship will not be included in the tie-breaker formula. a. In the case of a two-way tie between teams in the final standings for regular season League play, the following process will be used until all ties are broken and the seeding process is completed (ties will be broken in rank order beginning with the highest seed): i. Head-to-head competition - the higher seed will go to the team that has won the most League contests played against the other team involved in the tie (in the sport of volleyball, both matches and individual games will be considered). b. In the case of multiple ties (more than two teams tied for the same spot), the following process will be used: Note: The entire process for multiple-team ties must be completed. The Patriot League does not revert back to the two-way tie formula once the multiple-team tie has been resolved. i. Records between the tied teams will be evaluated to determine if one team won more contests against the other tied institutions; ii. If a tie still exists, a comparison of records will be conducted for each team starting with the highest seed not involved in the tie and continuing through the lowest seed, if necessary; i. If a tie still exists, a comparision of records will be conducted versus out-of-league common opponents; ii. If a tie still exists, an examination of goal differential will be made between tied teams (the goal differential can be no greater than eight); iii. If a tie still exists, an examination of goal differential of total League competition will be made (goal differential can be no greater than eight in any one contest); v. If a tie still exists, there will be a coin flip (two teams) or draw (multiple teams).
