It s a veritable murderers row facing Patriot League teams this weekend, with Navy heading down to Chapel Hill, N.C. Friday evening for a 7:30 p.m. start at No. 12/13 North Carolina. The tough opposition continues Saturday, as Bucknell faces a challenge at home when it hosts No. 20/RV Villanova at 12 p.m. The Wildcats are coming off a close 9-8 victory over Lehigh last weekend. Finally, there s the marquee matchup of the weekend as Army revisits the site of its upset in last year s NCAA Tournament first round, when the Black Knights head north to Syracuse to take on the top-ranked Orange Sunday at 4 p.m. Syracuse is ranked No. 1 in this week s Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media top 20 and second in the USILA Coaches Poll. Taking Control Sophomore Ryan Snyder has been incredible for Lehigh in its first two games of the 2011 campaign. In the season-opener against Saint Joseph s, the Reading, Pa., native went 17-4 on faceoffs for the Mountain Hawks in a 16-7 victory over the visiting Hawks. Last weekend at Villanova, he nearly repeated his performance to the exact numbers, winning 16 of 21 showdowns at the X. Over the first two games, Snyder is a combined 33 of 42 (78.6 percent) on faceoffs and leads the Patriot League with 22 groundballs. Army Voted Preseason Favorite Fresh off an 11-6 campaign, a perfect 6-0 Patriot League record and an appearance in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Army was voted the 2011 preseason favorite by head coaches and sports information directors around the League who could not vote for their own teams. The Black Knights secured the maximum 78 points and 12 first-place votes, ahead of 2010 runner-up Navy, which garnered 58 points and one first-place vote. Bucknell took third with 51 points and the lone remaining first-place vote, while Colgate secured fourth with 39 points. Lehigh (31 points), Lafayette (30) and Holy Cross (13) rounded out the poll. Patriot League Hits National Television in 2011 A total of eight Patriot League men s lacrosse games will be nationally televised on CBS College Sports Network in 2011, including all three games of the League Tournament on April 29 and May 1. The Patriot League Tournament is the only conference tournament in the country that is nationally televised in its entirety. Navy s game hosting Maryland Friday, April 8 is the first Patriot League game to hit the national television airwaves, as the teams will battle at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Md. at 7 p.m. Eight days later, CBS College Sports Network returns to Annapolis to televise the annual Army-Navy matchup Saturday, April 16 at 2 p.m. In addition to the eight games on CBSC, the Navy-Johns Hopkins matchup in Baltimore, Md. April 23 will be televised on ESPNU beginning at 8 p.m. Leopards Look For Return Trip During the preseason, Lafayette head coach Terry Mangan stressed that 2011 is a new year for his club in Easton. The Leopards surely would love to duplicate last season s torrid start, which featured a season-opening six-game win streak with victories over nationally-ranked League powers Navy and Bucknell. Despite last week s windy 8-4 loss to visiting Fairfield, expectations remain high for Lafayette, which looks to secure its second straight bid to the Patriot League Tournament. All Roads Lead to Late April The 2011 Patriot League Tournament is scheduled for Friday, April 29 and Sunday, May 1, at the site of the regular-season champion and highest seed. All three games will be televised nationally by CBS College Sports Network, with the semifinals taking place Friday at 5 p.m. and 7:45 p.m. The championship contest is slated for Sunday at 3 p.m. The Patriot League Tournament is the only conference tournament that is scheduled to be nationally televised in its entirety. Last season, Army posted a perfect 6-0 record to earn the regular-season title and hosting responsibilities. After defeating Lafayette in the semifinals, the Black Knights posted a victory over archrival Navy in the championship game to advance to the NCAA Tournament.
