The Greyhounds will host the U.S. Military Academy at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 22, in a game that will determine the No. 2 seed in next week s Patriot League Championships. The winner of Friday s game will receive a bye to the Patriot League Semifinals. Pat Spencer has recorded two or more points in all 12 games to start his collegiate career, and he has seven multigoal and eight multi-assist games. Last Time Out Zach Herreweyers caught a Pat Spencer feed and scored on an extra-man opportunity with 9.9 seconds left in regulation to give Loyola a victory over visiting Boston University. Loyola scored the last three goals of the game, all assisted by Spencer, and ended the contest on a 7-2 run that provided a comeback after the Terriers scored five-straight in the third quarter to lead 9-5 midway through the frame. Loyola tied the game on a Zack Sirico goal, one of his career-high tying three in the game, with 4:05 to play, but the Terriers went on man-up with 3:10 left U.S. Military Academy USILA/Media Polls 20th/20th Overall Record 8-4 Patriot League Record 5-2 Head Coach Joe Alberici Alma Mater, Year Alfred, 91 Record/At USMA 99-80/91-74 Last Meeting Army 12, Loyola 11 April 21, 2015, in Baltimore Spencer posted his two highest goal totals in the Greyhounds games at Colgate and Lehigh scoring four times versus the Raiders and putting up three against the Mountain Hawks. Loyola killed the penalty when a Jared Mintzlaff check dislodged the ball from Pat Myers stick, but Loyola gave the ball back to the Terriers on a turnover. Romar Dennis, however, caused a turnover by Adam Schaal, picked up the ground ball and cleared the ball back for Loyola. After the turnover, the Terrers were assessed a conduct penalty, and the Greyhounds went man-up after a timeout with 17 seconds remaining. Herreweyers slipped to the front of the goal, caught a Spencer feed from the left to score his fourth goal.

The Greyhounds held off the Black Knights after they pulled within a goal in the game s final three minutes. The teams met during last year s regular-season on March 14, 2015, at Michie Stadium, and the Greyhounds put 18- of-25 shots on goal to defeat the Black Knights, Last Time vs. Army Army West Point (9-5) vs. Loyola Maryland (7-8) Date: Apr 21, 2015 Attendance: 546 Weather: 65 degrees, partly cloudy, 28% humid., wind N at 9 Army West Point led 8-7 with 3:44 left in the third quarter before the Greyhounds received goals from Zach Herreweyers and Tyler Albrecht to go up one entering regulation s final 15 minutes. Loyola won the ensuing faceoff but could not get off a shot, and Army West Point advanced to the semifinals. Fitting Right In Pat Spencer was in the starting lineup on attack for his first collegiate game at Virginia, and he made an immediate difference on the Greyhounds offensive side of the ball. The freshman from Davidsonville, Maryland, scored two goals and assisted on a pair, earning Corvias Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors after the fact. He had a second-consecutive four-point game, scoring once and assisting on a gamehigh three versus Johns Hopkins. Spencer then put up six points against Lafayette with the Greyhounds first two goals before dishing out four assists. He earned his second Patriot League Rookie of the Week award after scoring twice against Towson before posting a goal and then-season-high tying four assists at Holy Cross. Spencer received his third weekly rookie honor from the conference on March 28 after logging three goals and eight assists in wins over Georgetown and Bucknell. He set career-highs with six assists and seven points against the Bison. He then was named Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on April 4 after scoring a career-high four goals to go with an assist in a 12-4 win at Colgate. At Lehigh, it was down 9-7 with 5:55 left in the quarter, and Boston University had a 10-6 advantage with 4:22 to go in the period. After those points, Loyola outscored Lehigh, 4-1, and the Terriers, 7-2, to comeback for wins. The Greyhounds outshot those teams, 26-7, in the fourth quarters of those games. Overall, the Greyhounds are 4-1 in one-goal games this season after going 1-6 in similar contests last year. Taking Care Of The Ball Through 12 games this season, and national games as of Tuesday, April 19, the Greyhounds are fifth in NCAA Division I in fewest turnovers per game. Loyola has averaged just miscues in its 11 outings. On the flip-side of the statistical category, Loyola s opponents are averaging.2 giveaways per game. They have had fewer than 10 just twice (Holy Cross and Lehigh). Hat Tricks For Herreweyers Zach Herreweyers, the 2016 Patriot League Preseason Offensive Player of the Year, had nine hat tricks in 15 games a year ago and tallied two or more in. With 18 goals so far this year, Herreweyers has scored 65 over the last two years, after topping the Patriot League in 2015 when he finished seventh in NCAA Division I with 3. goals per game. His hat trick against Boston University raised his career total to 18. Herreweyers has scored three or more goals in half of his collegiate games (36). With 84 goals and 96 points, he is averaging 2.33 goals per game and 2.67 points in his career. Herreweyers was named the Corvias Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week on Feb. 22 after his three-goal, one-assist outing against Johns Hopkins. In Loyola s last two games, Herreweyers has had back-to-back hat tricks with three goals and an assist at Lehigh and four goals versus Boston University. He had previously not scored since an injury on March 19 against the U.S. Naval Academy held him out for two-plus games. Spreading The Wealth With a season-high 10 assists on 14 goals March 26 against Bucknell, the Greyhounds continued their trend of posting high assist totals in games they have won this season. In Loyola s nine wins, 60.8 percent (62-of-102) goals have been assisted. Conversely, only 39.1 percent (9-of-23) goals in its three losses came off assists. Against Bucknell, 10 players scored goals and another two recorded assists for the Greyhounds. Loyola had five goals from its attack, four from its first midfield, two from its second midfield, one from its third midfield and a pair by long-stick midfielder Ryan Fournier. Earlier this season, in a March 5 win at College of the Holy Cross, nine players scored Loyola s 10 goals. Stover s First Starts Jacob Stover made his collegiate debut to start the second quarter March 19, when the Greyhounds played at the U.S. Naval Academy. He finished with four goals, four ground balls and five goals allowed in 45 minutes of action against the Midshipmen. Stover then made his first start on March 23 against Georgetown, and the freshman finished with nine saves while allowing just seven goals. He continued his solid play by yielding only one goal in more than 49 minutes of action against Bucknell, making 12 saves against the Bison. For his efforts against Georgetown, Stover was named the Corvias Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week and USILA/Lids Team Sports National Defensive Player of the Week. He followed those games with a 10-save, four-goals allowed performance on April 3 at Colgate and he had 14 saves in an win at Lehigh on April 9. Century Mark Charley Toomey won the 100th game of his head coaching career Feb. 27 against Lafayette, becoming just the second coach in Loyola men s lacrosse history to do so. Toomey is in his 11th year at Loyola and is since 2006 at the helm of the Greyhounds program. Toomey is ninth among active Division I coaches in winning percentage (.671). Cottle was from Little Of This, Little Of That With his goal at the buzzer of the first half at Lehigh, Brian Sherlock scored his 100th point in a Loyola uniform. Last year, he was second on the Greyhounds in both goals (29) and assists (19) last year, and he has continued to put up solid numbers in both categories this year, ranking second on the team in assists and points, third in goals. His second goal of the season was the 50th of his career. With 17 goals and 10 assists through 12 games this year, Sherlock has 65 and 39 for 104 points in 44 career games. Leading Transition Scoring A large part of Loyola s success over the past several years has been its ability to score in transition, and last year long-stick midfielder Ryan Fournier again led in that capacity. Fournier scored four goals and assisted on five last season, while picking up 58 ground balls, second on the team. This season, he has scored against Virginia, Lafayette, Holy Cross, twice versus Bucknell, at Lehigh and against Boston University to bring his career total to 16 goals and seven assists. His two goals against the Bison matched his career-best. Preseason Patriot League Prognostications Loyola was picked as the Patriot League Preseason favorites for the third time in as many seasons since the school joined the conference prior to the academic year. The Greyhounds garnered 12 of a possible 18 first-place votes in the preseason poll to tally 122 points. The U.S. Naval Academy was second with 108 points and five first-place nods, and Colgate University was right behind with 105 and one. The U.S. Military Academy and Bucknell University were fourth and fifth, while Boston University, Lehigh University, College of the Holy Cross and Lafayette College rounded out the nine-team poll. Zach Herreweyers was selected as the Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year. He was joined on the Preseason All-Patriot League team by Brian Sherlock. More To The MLL Three Loyola seniors were selected in January s Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Entry Draft, bringing the number of Greyhounds selected over the last four seasons to. With an even 20, Loyola is one of 12 schools to have 20 or more MLL Draft picks in the League s history. Tyler Albrecht was the first Loyola player selected, going 15th overall to the expansion Atlanta Blaze in the second round. David Manning was tabbed 43rd overall by the New York Lizards in the fifth round, and Zach Herreweyers went 47th to the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the sixth. With rosters announced this week, seven former Greyhounds will start the year on MLL active rosters: Joe Fletcher (New York Lizards), Pat Frazier (Florida Launch), Josh Hawkins (Boston Cannons), Scott Ratliff (Atlanta Blaze), P.T. Ricci (Launch), Mike Sawyer (Charlotte Hounds) and Justin Ward (Chesapeake Bayhawks). J.P. Dalton is also on the Bayhawks practice squad. Get To Ten Since Charley Toomey became head coach at Loyola in 2006, the Greyhounds have scored 10 or more goals on 86 occasions. With the win over Bucknell, Loyola has won 80.2 percent of those games (69-17). Since 2012 Loyola is tied for the second-best winning percentage in NCAA Division I men s lacrosse since the start of the 2012 season. The Greyhounds are during that stretch (18-1 in 2012, 11-5 in 20, 15-2 in 2014, 7-8 in 2015 and 9-3 this season) for a.759 mark. Denver has won 66 games during that time and has a.786 winning percentage. Up Next The Greyhounds will start play in the Patriot League Championships next week. If Loyola beats Army West Point on Friday, it will be the No. 2 seed and play in Friday s semifinals at the U.S. Naval Academy. A loss to the Black Knights would mean the Greyhounds would be the No. 3 seed and host a quarterfinal game at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26.

6 Head Coach Charley Toomey 11th Season Loyola 90 Charley Toomey, who is in his 11th season as a collegiate head coach, has put his stamp on the Loyola men s lacrosse program as a disciplined, tough, athletic and skillful unit. The Greyhounds ascended to the top of college lacrosse in 2012, winning Loyola s first-ever NCAA Division I Championship. His 20 and 2014 squad garnered return trips to the NCAA First Round, and over the last two years, Toomey and his staff have coached 19 players who earned All-America honors from the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. On Feb. 27, 2016, Toomey became just the second men s lacrosse coach in Loyola history to post 100 wins as a head coach. The 2012 Loyola squad set several program records and tied the NCAA Division I record for wins in a season with 18.
