3 3 THE MATCHUP The Chesapeake Bayhawks come into the midweek showdown with the Atlanta Blaze humbled by the Charlotte Hounds last time out. It was a rainy Saturday night that featured a Hounds team with a point to prove against the thenhottest team in the league, as the Bayhawks sevengame win streak was snapped in the 2010 loss at NavyMarine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland. Now one and a half games back from the firstplaced Dallas Rattlers (103), the 83 Bayhawks look to become just the second team to clinch one of the four playoff spots after the Rattlers clinched over the weekend in a last gasp victory over the thirdplaced Denver Outlaws (75). The offense looked out of sorts in what was unfavorable weather, yet Colin Heacock continued to lead the way with four goals. The former Terp leads the team in scoring with 35 points on 22 goals, 1 twopointer and 12 assists. After such a long winning streak, the Bayhawks must find a way to regain their rhythm before getting ready for another playoff run. Cottle said, last week Charlotte played harder, faster and better than we did. We just need to flush that game down the toilet play harder, together and better. Atlanta (56) is coming off a mustwin victory over the Ohio Machine to stay alive for that fourth and final postseason spot, winning 1310 for its second consecutive win away from home. Leading attackman Kevin Rice s three goals and one assist combined with a disciplined defensive effort in net from goalie Adam Ghitelman s 12 saves on the night to stay within striking distance from both the Hounds and the fifthplaced New York Lizards (66). Rice s 54 points (27 goals, 1 2 PT, 26 assists) is good for second in the league in scoring this season, and the attack filled with players like midfielders Deemer Class and Connor Kelly, attackman Matt Gibson and Tommy Palasek and defenseman Scott Ratliff and Liam Byrnes makes for a challenging matchup on Thursday night. With three games remaining, the playoff race is heating up and this midweek test will show the Bayhawks ability to bounce back when it matters most. Watch the Bayhawks play at Fifth Third Bank Stadium against the Atlanta Blaze on Thursday evening at 7:30pm EST. Games will be replayed on NBC Sports Washington on July 26th at 11:30pm EST, July 27th at 12:00pm EST, and July 28th at 12:00pm EST. HEADLINE: Remembering the last time the Bayhawks flew into the postseason The Chesapeake Bayhawks have the chance at clinching a playoff berth for the first time in five seasons when they take the field against the Atlanta Blaze. The last time the Bayhawks made the postseason, they took it home for their fifth championship in Former Delaware legend and 2013 Championship Weekend MVP John Grant Jr. led the Bayhawks offense past the young Charlotte Hounds in the title game 109 victory at PPL Park in Philadelphia. Current assistant coach Bob Shillinglaw coached Grant Jr. at Delaware from Chesapeake s backtoback championship success in 2013 was part of a dynastical run that saw the Bayhawks secure their third title in five years. Syracuse alum Matt Abbott was already in his fifth season as a Bayhawk while thenrookie long stick midfielder Jesse Bernhardt played key roles in the titlewinning side and are among key members of this year s secondplaced team in the MLL standings. Abbott scored 14 goals in 14 games, totaling 22 points as a twoway midfielder for Chesapeake while Bernhardt scooped up 28 groundballs in just nine games played. Now as a member of this week s opposition in the Atlanta Blaze, midfielder Matt Mackrides was actually a goal scorer in that title game back in 2013 for the Bayhawks. Mackrides, Bernhardt, Abbott and veteran Matt Danowski will all be on the field representing that thrilling 2013 championship contest. Danowski, then a key part of the Hounds offense, has enjoyed a great season with the Bayhawks this season. The Bayhawks entered the postseason with a 75 record, finishing third in the league standings. This season, Chesapeake s 83 record looks primed for one of the topfour postseason bound spots with three games remaining in the MLL regular season. Former UMBC Retriever attackman Drew Westervelt lit the league on fire and led the Bayhawks sharing offense with 36 goals and 12 assists, while players like Grant Jr. and Casey Powell were able to effectively orchestrate the offense during the playoff run. Powell, who only played in three games that season, could be quite a similar situation to the return of twotime Tewaaraton winning attackman Lyle Thompson this season. Thompson s beginning of the season was challenged with an injury, but a good showing for the Iroquois National team could see him play an integral role on Chesapeake s offense down the final stretch.

4 Winning teams usually have similar qualities in common. They are usually tough, play hard and have talented players. They usually make sacrifices for the good of the team and care deeply about each other, said Coach Cottle. When asked about comparison to his past championship teams he said that our teams in were like that and this year we are beginning to show those same characteristics. The Bayhawks core was formed quite similar to this team s core as well. Led by shot stopper and Annapolis native Kip Turner, an imposing midfield comprised of Ben Hunt and Kyle Dixon, and finishers like Ben Rubeor made for an impressive lineup. Similarly, this year s core of Niko Amato, Myles Jones and Colin Heacock, and Josh Byrne all hope to make some noise once all is said and done STANDINGS 4 TEAM WIN LOSS GAMES BEHIND Dallas 10 2 Chesapeake Denver Charlotte New York Atlanta Florida Boston Ohio GAMEBYGAME RESULTS GAME DATE OPP. As the draft began those top three players quickly flew off the board and when it got to the Chesapeake Bayhawks pick at 4 th overall they made the first trade in the draft with, season opener opponent, Dallas Rattlers. The trade allowed for the Bayhawks to move back to the 6 th overall pick in the first round and pick up the 42 nd overall pick in the 5 th round. This trade allowed for the Bayhawks to gain a draft pick in the 5 th round, since they traded their 5 th round pick earlier in the year for Garret Epple. With the 6 th overall selection the Chesapeake Bayhawks selected Long Stick Midfielder Sean Mayle from Denver University. Mayle brings in a young, proven Longstick midfielder into an already star studded group. Sean is an offensive threat at the pole position with 9 career goals and 5 assists and will be dangerous with the MLL s 2 point goal. While he adds an offensive spark Sean bring reliable wing play with his 120 career ground balls and his 21 caused turnovers will be a great addition to the defense after he is finished with his collegiate career. Following this selection the Bayhawks went back on the clock in the second round of the draft and selected Ian MacKay with the 13 th overall pick out of Vermont. MacKay is a Canadian midfielder that is a dangerous offensive threat. In his career at Vermont he has amassed over 141 goals, 76 assists, and helped win the game with 8 game winning goals. Following the second round pick the Bayhawks coaching staff had a long wait before it made its way to the 5 th round where they selected short stick defensive midfielder Ryan Hursey from Georgetown University. Ryan Hursey will make his way up Route 50 to Annapolis, bringing a tough, athletic midfielder that will help with clearing the ball out of their zone and work to improve the defense from last year. With the 49 th overall pick in the 6 th round the Chesapeake Bayhawks were able to grab a steal in Shack Stanwick, brother of Bayhawks attacker Steele Stanwick, out of Johns Hopkins. Shack is the youngest of all Stanwick brothers and brings his offensive experience from Hopkins as a four year starter where he racked up a total of 89 goals and 106 assists at the attack position. Last but not least Cottle grabbed Salisbury close defensemen Kyle Tucker with their 7 th round pick to add defensive depth and continue to improve on the defensive side of the ball.
