4 FOREWORD The Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan is the 44 th volume of its series. After the devolution of Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MinFA) the function pertaining to agricultural statistics has been transferred to Pakistan Bureau of Statistics. The publication provides all sort of data relating to agricultural sector of the country upto June, 2011 which includes area, production and yield of crops. The data for the earlier period commencing from through has been provided for time series analysis. The publication contains province-wise, crop-wise and other agricultural statistical data and reasons for increase / decrease in the production of major crops. I wish to commend the DG, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and team of the Economic Wing for preparing this important document which will serve as a source of invaluable reference for all stakeholders including the ministries, government departments, economic policy planners, students, researchers and agronomists. The information contained in this book can be used for formulation of growth models, plans and strategies for the development of agriculture sector with the ultimate objective of accelerating the pace of economic development of the country. For the Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan to serve the stakeholders well, it must be regularly updated. If issues like climate change are creating completely new challenges for international trade, including trade in agriculture, if food security is now a central pre-occupation in international agricultural trade, if the link between trade and investment is an essential one, then the PBS s publication must start responding to these questions. Suggestions to further broaden the scope of the publication and improve its quality will be highly appreciated. Islamabad February, 2012 (Sohail Ahmad) Secretary

5 INTRODUCTION Agricultural is the backbone of Pakistan s economy. About 68% of the population is engaged in farming directly or indirectly through production, processing and distribution of major agricultural commodities. Agriculture contributes about 21 percent of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), provides livelihood to about 68 percent people living in rural areas and employs about 45 percent of the total national labour force. The agriculture sector is the major contributor in the overall export earnings of Pakistan. The share of Food Group alone in the total export of Pakistan for the year stood at 17.5 percent. Agriculture is equally important for industrial development. Out of about 5000 industrial establishments in Pakistan, about 60 percent are agro-based. The agriculture provides raw material for domestic industries like rugs and carpets, sugar, leather, foot ware and food products etc. Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan was an annual publication of the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MinFA), which aimed to provide the agricultural statistics for policy formulation, planning and research. After devolution of the MinFA, the Economic Wing of the defunct ministry, responsible for this publication, was transferred to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) along with its incumbents. Thus the present volume of the publication is being carried out by the PBS. Methodology The book in Part-I provides data about major and minor crops which includes area, production and also per hectare yield. The data is for the period from to to facilitate

6 year-to-year comparison and analysis. Variety-wise data of major crops i.e. wheat, cotton and rice is provided, while data of other crops are without any varietal differentiation. The data relating to fruit such as citrus, mangoes etc. and major condiments/vegetables such as onions and potatoes etc. has also been added in this part. Part-II consists of land use statistics which includes details of irrigated, non-irrigated areas, farm size etc. Part-III provides data about agricultural inputs i.e. improved seeds, fertilizers, water, pesticides, rainfall data and details of area covered by plant protection etc. Part-IV relates to disbursement of agricultural credit by Commercial Banks, ZTBL, PPCBL and domestic private banks. Part-V relates to agricultural machinery, lift pumps, tube wells and tractors according to horsepower, farm size as well as private/public ownership etc. Part-VI contains livestock population in the country alongwith estimated production of milk, meat, eggs and other livestock products etc. Part-VII production and details of fishing crafts. provides data about inland and marine fish Part-VIII provides information about forestry, rangeland, major forest products and value addition of various forestry products etc.

7 Part-IX provides trade statistics relating to major exports and imports of agricultural commodities. Part-X provides details of procurement/support and intervention prices as well as wholesale prices of various important crops such as wheat, cotton, sugarcane and maize besides rates of diesel, electricity & petroleum products etc. Part-XI provides details of per capita availability of cereals, edible oils, meat, fish and milk alongwith estimates of GDP etc. Crops data is collected through acreage surveys as well as sample village surveys by the enumerators who fill up a number of prescribed proformas and submit to Provincial Crop Reporting Services. The accuracy of estimates is further cross checked and verified by joint inspection teams of Revenue and Extension Departments of Provincial Governments. These crops estimates are supplied to the PBS for compilation at Federal level. The estimates are submitted in three stages i.e. first, second and final estimates for the major crops. Reasons for increase/decrease in the production of major crops have been included to facilitate the data analyst. In addition to crops data, the book also contains information about availability of agricultural inputs like water, rainfall, fertilizers, insecticides, electricity, water-logging, salinity, per capita availability of major crops, edible oils, meat, milk and fish, storage capacity, procurement/support and intervention prices etc. A summary table about area, production and yield of agricultural commodities has also been added in the publication for the years and

8 The Government policy is to ensure maximum food security through sustainable agricultural development and balanced growth of food sector to meet population needs and also to generate agricultural surplus to enhance the export of agricultural sector, which would eventually lead to enhance the country s growth performance. It is only possible, if sufficient reliable data is available which is the primary objective of this publication. The book provides statistical data in the form of a comprehensive and detailed compendium. The timely and prompt cooperation extended by all the concerned departments and organizations is well acknowledged with gratitude. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics may be contacted for any additional information and the publication is also available at PBS s website (Arif Mahmood Cheema) Director General/Member

Area decreased due to problems faced by the farmers in disposal of wheat produced last year, shifting of area to cotton & sugarcane crops in irrigated tract, late crushing by sugarmills and considerable increase in Potato (Autumn) crop.the production shows an increase of 8.16% over the last year, which is attributed to sowing in appropriate time and available moisture in barani tract, better weather conditions, recommended doze of inputs and use of high yielding varieties.

Decrease in area over last year, is due to heavy flood and breaches of protective bunds of river Indus, which badly affected main paddy growing areas. Moreover, low market returns during last year that discouraged the growers to bring more area under the crop. While decrease in production is attributed to corresponding decreasein area, and attack of different diseases and water logging of early sown crop affected the yield of supreme as well as course varities to some extent.
