14 INTRODUCTION The Ministry of National Food Security and Research (NFS&R) is assigned the function regarding collection of statistics regarding production, consumption, prices, imports and exports of food grains. Prior to the devolution, this function was being performed by Ministry of Food and Agriculture. This function has the objectives to provide the agricultural statistics for policy formulation, planning and research. The Economic Wing Ministry of NFS&R is carrying out this activity and thus the present publication captioned as Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan is being produced first time by the M/o NFS&R. Agricultural is the backbone of Pakistan s economy and is an inevitable and integral part to ensure Food Security in the country. About 68% of the population is engaged in farming directly or indirectly through production, processing and distribution of major agricultural commodities. Agriculture contributes about 21 percent of our Gross Domestic Product (GDP), provides livelihood to about 68 percent people living in rural areas and employs about 45 percent of the total national labour force. The agriculture sector is the major contributor in the overall export earnings of Pakistan. The share of food group alone in the total export of Pakistan for the year stood at 17.5 percent. Agriculture is equally important for industrial development. Out of about 5000 industrial establishments in Pakistan, about 60 percent are agro-based. This publication of Agricultural Statistics of Pakistan is aimed to provide area, production and also per hectare yield data about major and minor crops. The data is for the period from to to facilitate year-to-year comparison and analysis. Variety-wise data of major crops i.e. wheat, cotton and rice is provided, while data of other crops are without any varietal differentiation. The data relating to fruit such as citrus, mangoes etc. and major condiments/vegetables such as onions and potatoes etc. has also been added. It also consists of land use statistics which includes details of irrigated, non-irrigated areas, farm size etc. The data about agricultural inputs i.e. improved seeds, fertilizers, water, pesticides, rainfall data and details of area covered by plant protection etc are given. The data relating to disbursement of agricultural credit by Commercial Banks, ZTBL, PPCBL and domestic private banks is also documented in this publication. The data also pertaining to agricultural machinery, lift pumps, tube wells and tractors according to horsepower, farm size as well as private/public ownership etc. Being integral part of agricultural system the publication is
15 consisting of data on livestock population in the country alongwith estimated production of milk, meat, eggs and other livestock products etc. It also provides data about inland and marine fish production and details of fishing crafts. Part of the publication also provides information about forestry, rangeland, major forest products and value addition of various forestry products etc. The publication also covers trade statistics relating to major exports and imports of agricultural commodities. In addition, it provides details of procurement/support and intervention prices as well as wholesale prices of various important crops such as wheat, cotton, sugarcane and maize besides rates of diesel, electricity & petroleum products etc. The data provided on per capita availability of cereals, edible oils, meat, fish and milk alongwith estimates of GDP etc. add value to this publication. It is important to mention that the crops data is collected through acreage surveys as well as sample village surveys by the enumerators who fill up a number of prescribed Performa s and submit to Provincial Crop Reporting Services. The accuracy of estimates is further cross checked and verified by joint inspection teams of Revenue and Extension Departments of Provincial Governments. These crops estimates are supplied to the PBS for compilation at Federal level. The estimates are submitted in three stages i.e. first, second and final estimates for the major crops. Reasons for increase/decrease in the production of major crops have been included to facilitate the data analyst. A summary table about area, production and yield of agricultural commodities has also been added in the publication for the years and The Government policy is to ensure food security through sustainable agricultural development and balanced growth of food sector to meet population needs and also to generate agricultural surplus to enhance the export of agricultural sector, which would eventually lead to enhance the country s growth performance. It is only possible, if reliable data is available which the primary objective of this publication is.the timely and prompt cooperation extended by all the concerned departments and organizations at federal and provincial level is well acknowledged with gratitude. Wing The publication is also available at M/o NFS&R s website Economic M/o NFS&R may be contacted for any additional information and also to suggest improvements in future endeavors. (Dr. Muhammad Aslam) Economic Consultant

Area decreased due to problems faced by the farmers in disposal of wheat produced last year, shifting of area to BT cotton crops in irrigated tract, late crushing by sugarmills and considerable increase in Potato (Autumn) and Maiz (Spring) crops.production shows a decrease of 6.90% over the last year, which is attributed to correspondence decrease in area, less use of fertilizer, shortage of rainfal, less canal withdrawal, acute load shedding and attack of aphid caused low yield.
