Council Jackson Co. 4-H s Congratulations Schedule of Events February Calendar SALE Calf Scramble Upcoming Events Consumer Decision Making Contest District 11 Roundup Photography Contest Fashion Show & Storyboard Contest Important Websites Heifers Available for Commercial Heifers Projects The Premium Bull and Replacement Female Sale presented by the Jackson County Cattle Raisers Association on Saturday Feb. 9 will feature several pens of heifers that will be open and should be the right age for Commercial Heifer projects for the Jackson and Calhoun County Fairs. Many of the heifers will be divided in groups of three which will work well. These cattle will be available for viewing on Friday and Saturday with the Sale starting at 1 pm Saturday. The open heifers will probably be sold toward the end of the sale. There will be heifers available from Wolf Point and Vin-E Farms as well as from other breeders. Feeding Beef Cattle Projects Most junior beef cattle exhibitors today probably buy feed in a commercially mixed, complete ration. Beef cattle feeding involves attention to nutrient requirements. There are four basic classes of nutrients: vitamins, minerals, protein, and energy. VITAMINS Most grains are deficient in vitamin A. Green feeds such as alfalfa hay (or growing grass) contain high levels of vitamin A. Other sources include vitamin A feeding concentrates and injections. Other vitamins usually are adequate in most rations. B-complex vitamins sometimes help when starting cattle on feed, especially drawn, stressed calves. Also, some people periodically give vitamin B shots, feeling that appetite is improved. MINERALS Grains are high in phosphorous and low in calcium. So, minerals used in grain rations should be high in calcium and low in phosphorous. This is the opposite of a good pasture or range mineral, so be sure to use the right product. You ll have the best results by balancing the complete mixed ration with minerals (including salt), rather than relying on freechoice consumption out of a mineral feeder PROTEIN The total diet should average around 11% to 13% crude protein (CP) for most uses. Younger, growing animals need more protein. Oilseed meals such as cottonseed and soybean are high in CP ENERGY Energy in cattle diets usually is expressed as Net Energy or Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN). High energy feeds like corn and milo (sorghum grain) are low in fiber. Low energy feeds such as cottonseed hulls are high in fiber. Low-energy, strictly growing rations usually contain around 60% to 65% TDN, which generally corresponds to a content of 15% to 20% Crude Fiber (CF). High energy fattening rations have over 70% TDN and less than 8% CF. General purpose or in-between rations have 65% to 70% TDN and 9% to 15% CF. ROUGHAGE Roughage is not technically a nutrient but is an important feeding factor. Rations low in roughage are more likely to cause digestive problems. Hays and some products like cottonseed hulls are high in roughage. A large percentage of today s feeders rely on commercially mixed feeds. Many highly desirable products are available. In buying such feeds, insist on freshness and consistency from batch to batch.

2 PAGE 2 JACKSON COUNTY 4-H NEWS LETTER FEBRUARY 2013 Welcome to the 2013 Texas 4-H Roundup! Happy New Year!! I hope each of you had a great holiday season and are getting back into the swing of the new year. We are excited to send out the first version of the 2013 Roundup Report for the month of January. You will be receiving updates each month as the event draws closer. 4-H faculty, staff, volunteers, and Texas 4-H Council have been working hard at planning this memorable event. This year, Roundup is back home in College Station, Texas on the campus of Texas A&M University. A tremendous marketing campaign has been formed in the College Station area. The local media, State 4-H Council, and Texas 4-H and Youth Development staff have contributed greatly to these efforts. These groups are also planning lots of new and exciting elements for the week. Each month leading up to Roundup you will continue to receive updates on events that will be taking place throughout the week of Roundup. I encourage each of you to begin making plans to attend the 2013 Texas 4-H Roundup. I promise you will not want to miss out!! Kyle Merten - Texas 4-H Roundup Coordinator Registration Packet Coming in March Please look for the new Registration packet in March of This will include all information about contests, housing (see below) and much much more! BIG CHANGES- NO DORMS for 2013 In order to bring 4-H'ers, parents, and volunteers the best possible Roundup experience, Texas 4-H has decided to take over the Bryan/College Station hotels! This will result in a reduced rate for registration costs as well as a convenient atmosphere for 4-H'ers! Other than the traditional method of staying in on-campus dorms, all 4-H Roundup participants will now be asked to utilize hotel blocks provided by local hotels and the cities of Byran and College Station. Many on-campus housing facilities will be undergoing renovations and the twin cities have gone above and beyond to provide accommodations for 4-H'ers from across the state. The most important thing to remember, is BOOK EARLY to SAVE BIG! 4-H faculty will be releasing codes for room blocks in early Spring so you and your families can plan ahead and get the best possible rates Roundup Rules and Guidelines Do not miss out on the changes taking place with the 2013 Texas 4-H Roundup.
