1 2015 AFL South East AFCA Welcome: Welcome to the third and final AFL South East Region AFCA newsletter for We hope this newsletter finds you well, and you managed to achieve the goals you set at the start of the year, whether they are goals you had set with your team, or your own personal coaching goals. In this newsletter, you will find a range of information, including drills, articles, and resources etc, which have all been provided to you as part of your AFCA membership. Kind regards Cam Roberts Football Development Manager - AFL South East Cameron Hotton joins AFL South East as new Football Development Manager Cameron has spent the last four and a half years with his family in Darwin. After initially relocating to the top end to take on the role as the General Manager of the Tiwi Bombers Football Club in the NTFL, he then moved to the NT Thunder Football Club midway through their NEAFL Premiership year of 2011, to fill the position of Football Operations Manager. Following his time at AFLNT, he then spent his last two years in Darwin running the Sport & Recreation program and the AFL School of Excellence at St John's Catholic College. As a player, Cameron's senior career was at the East Burwood Football Club in the EFL and the Mansfield Football Club in the GVFL. Cameron's coaching experience has included being an assistant coach of the Tiwi Bombers in their premiership season, and an assistant coach of the NT Thunder Under 16 team at the National Championships in Cameron, was also involved in the Tiwi Bombers Youth Girls Premiership side in 2014/15. Cameron knows the area well having grown up in Warragul where his Father still resides. Cameron's focus within the South East Region will be the municipalities of Cardinia, Casey and Greater Dandenong, replacing Mick Roberts who has transferred to AFL Gippsland. 2 AFL South East Coach of the Year Winners Announced AFL South East would like to recognise the following regional Coach of the Year winners for Seniors Nick Jewell (Rosebud Football Club) Youth Steven Brattle (Mt Eliza Football Club) Female Anne-Marie Bayard (Narre Warren Junior Football Club) Junior Troy Ackerley (South Mornington Junior Football Club) Auskick Darren Hills (Langwarrin Auskick) Anne-Marie Bayard has also been nominated as finalist in the female category at the official AFCA Coach of the Year awards in November. Felix Arena from Somerville Auskick has been nominated for Auskick Volunteer of the Year. Strong Showing by Peninsula Girls in Youth Girls Shield Game 1: PENINSULA STINGRAYS def GOULBURN MURRAY After six intensive weeks of training, the girls were asked to trust that their training and hard work would all fall into place when they needed it come game time! With nearly half the team being first-year footballers, the emphasis of training had been on kicking skills, game sense drills and on learning positional roles and game structures. While warned of the physical intensity they would face, for some it was initially a little overwhelming in the first few minutes until they settled into the style and intensity they were up against. With strong midfielders, Bridie Kennedy, captain Parris Stahl and 14-year old Bella Shannon, with big Caitlin rucking, the girls quickly took control of the game, winning majority of centre clearances and boundary throw-ins. Zoe Mitchell, best-on ground, was inspiring, with perseverence and second and third efforts at every contest and hitting her targets with style and grace. When Caitlin landed awkwardly after a marking contest, injuring her knee and with a fracture to her wrist, Emily Rylance stepped in capably, dominating in the ruck and across the ground. The Stingrays managed to keep majority of the game in their forward line using extreme forward 50 pressure through the zone structure they worked on. The forward line led by Imani Frances, Sam Ryan (before she injured her ankle), Ruby Wilson, Tylah St Anne, and with strong overhead marking from Montana Macfarlane and Charlotte Seedsman, provided many opportunities at goal. Whist inaccuracy showed plagued some, the players' intensity to trap it in and get another crack at it, deserved great merit. The backline was geared and ready to compete but the relentless defensive pressure right across the ground, particularly from wingers, Lauren Field and Ruby Wilson and a backline that included Kamesa Sibosado, meant that the opposition team's forward entries were few and far between and was salvaged through strong marking from Tayla Prentice at full back.

3 The girls worked really hard on holding their positions and playing their role for the team. Their transition from defence and the game structures to keep the forward line open worked extremely well, leading to the team being described by the opposition coach as "a very well-drilled side". Goal Kickers : Frances 3, Seedsman 3, Wilson 3, Field, Rylance Best Players : Mitchell, Rylance, Field, Shannon, Wilson, Kennedy, Prentice Game Two: PENINSULA STINGRAYS def NORTH EAST BORDER Against a strong tackling side from the North East, the girls started out slowly, searching for the momentum from previous day's match. But it wasn't long before outstanding ruck tap-outs by Emily Rylance, Bridie Kennedy and the experience and communication of the onballers, led by captain Parris Stahl and Zoe Mitchell, helped clear the ball consistently from stoppage situations. Support and tackling pressure in the backline were tested a little today but the back line prevailed, conceding only one goal for the match. Tayla Prentice, Olivia Barrett, Ashleigh Gyurcsik and Keeley Davenport showing strong physical presence and confidence with courageous work and strong tackling and shepherding efforts through the centre and wing area from Jasmin Mandile, Rubi Sammut, Jaymie Lillie and especially young Shelley Heath. The forward line players were challenged in those swirly conditions early on, but strong leads and marking from our forwards, Suede Croad, Imani Francis and Kamesa Sibosado made it hard for the North East to block the space created through dummy and target leads. The ability to place the ball in front of the players created opportunities at important set shots for goal with well-placed kicks from the flanks. Lauren Field and Catherine Dunne kicked 4 early goals between them with great passing from Ruby Wilson help set the early dominance up forward. With good scoreboard pressure early on created the freedom to be able to move many players around into different positions. Tayla Prentice was shifted from full back to midfield and demonstrated her versatility and strong decision-making and technical skills. Little Emma Pugh moved to on-ball showing everyone in the midfield just how you lay a tackle and Izzy Woinarski demonstrated strong physical presence throughout the game and fought hard to win the footy whether in the backline or the forward line. 4 V/Line Boys Under 15 Peninsula Team Game 1: vs GIPPSLAND POWER 1 The Peninsula VLine Under 15 boys travelled together as a team from Frankston for Game 1 of the carnival at Morwell. Pitted against one of the strong Gippsland Power teams, the 24 players were an even split of boys from the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula junior football leagues. Coached by Stingrays Development Coach Brent Clinnick, the team arrived in Morwell to be greeted by perfect sunny conditions. The first quarter saw the Peninsula team taking time to adjust and familiarise themselves with both each other and the structures put in place by the coaching panel. As a result the Gippsland boys jumped out to an early two goal lead before our midfielders started to get back on top with two late goals to the Stingrays to grab the lead back at the first change. Gippsland Power continued their impressive accuracy in the second term with 5 straight goals, whilst despite plenty of possession the Peninsula boys could only manage the one major for the term through midfield star Ishak Bashir. Some good ball movement was undone at times with some turnovers by both foot and hand as the boys continued to develop the knowledge of playing together. At half time the boys had similar inside 50's and scoring shots but the Power accuracy had them in the lead to Peninsula Coach Brent Clinnick swung some changes in the second half with Edithvale-Aspendale midfielder James Hickey having to be replaced with soreness in his recently injured collar bone. His Edithvale-Aspendale teammate, Steve Tapolczay was swung forward in the second half with Seaford tall Bailey Schmidt swapping down back. Both moves proving valuable with the Peninsula Stingrays totally dominated the third quarter possession rate and driving the ball impressively through quick hands and accurate kicking into the forward 50. The result was a 6 goal to 1 third term with majors to twins Reid and Jai Nanscawen, the high marking Tapolczay, speedster Jai Taylor and two to Pearcedale-Baxter midfielder Matthew Cottrell. Despite lapsing at the start of the final quarter to allow unanswered Power goals, the Stingrays again fought back to take the lead again in the dying stages largely due to the midfield efforts of Bashir, Berenger, Mt Eliza's Finlay Bayne, Balnarring's Tristan Bitters and the versatile Dan Frampton (Red Hill JFC) playing deep in defence. A hasty tackle by Frampton in the dying seconds saw a free kick paid to Power who converted to steal the game. 5 Game 2 v North East Border Following a narrow loss on Monday to Gippsland, the players and coaching staff woke to another fine day in Morwell. After breakfast the team walked down to a community football oval to complete a light skills session along with some rehabilitation massages. Tuesday afternoon was spent hearing from one of our assistant coaches, Chris Fortnam, and his impressive football pathway from the Stingrays programs through to draft contention and then on to significant VFL and local football success. The team also analysed the vision from Monday's loss in conjunction with some personal and team goal setting to prepare them for game 2. On Wednesday we travelled to Moe Football Ground where another fantastic facility and beautiful weather awaited us. Game 2 saw the Peninsula Boys taking on North East Border 1 who had won their first game impressively against Geelong Falcons 1. Our team had a couple of changes with James Hickey's collarbone not allowing him to partake and being replaced by Frankston Dolphins runner Tom Baker, whilst Edithvale-Aspendale tall Steve Tapolczay was also missing due to injury. This time a good start by the boys with the team winning loads of midfield possession and peppering the goals albeit without accuracy. Rosebud twin Jai Nanscawen was very dangerous early but inaccurate with 3 behinds in a tricky wind, whilst Seaford midfielder Ishak Bashir continued his great form to register the only major for the quarter. Some late goals to North East Border saw them hold a narrow quarter time lead. The second quarter was all Stingrays with the team really starting to click and produce the sort of running, confident football that the coaching staff had trained for. Two early goals to Jai Nanscawen were followed by majors to Crib Point tall Riley Bowman who along with the Cumming twins were proving invaluable with their height and agility. Down the other end of the ground Red Hill's Dan Frampton and Beleura's Luke Webster were doing well in the key defensive positions, ably supported by Edithvale-Aspendale gun Will Barron and developing Balnarring youngster Will Brewster. Second term goals to Mt Martha's Tommas Crimmins and an after the siren major to the popular Lachlan Stenning (Bonbeach YCW) gave the boys a well deserved 13 point half time lead. After some further instruction around playing the same brand of football in the second half, captain Josh Berenger and his fellow midfielders Fin Bayne (Mt Eliza), Bashir and Balnarring jet Jai Taylor continued to break the lines and provide our forwards with ample scoring opportunities. Another four goals to the tricky scoring end for the term with Bashir kicking a second, and Seaford tall Bailey Schmidt clunking a big grab up forward. Balnarring's Tristan Bitters and Pearcedale's Matthew Cottrell followed up their great form in game one with another superb showcase of their clever highly skilled games. Peninsula ran out worthy winners of this game with another 3 goals in the last term including a fourth to Jai Nanscawen. The brand of football on display throughout parts of game one and for

6 the entire game at Moe was a credit to the talent of the team and a professional performance from the dedicated coaching staff. Best player for game 2 was captain Josh Berenger (Frankston Dolphins JFC) who used his strength and speed to great advantage. He was named in the V/Line team of the year along with fellow midfielders Fin Bayne (Mt Eliza JFC) and Ishak Bashir (Seaford JFC).
