4 Boys Basketball U18 ISAC Finals Special Report - Sunday February 5th 2017 Semi Final: U18A GIS 47 BSKL 22 MoM: Joachim Brady The first match of the day for the boys was against a well organised British International School side. GIS employed a new trap defence for the first time that saw them go up at the half. The team pulled away in the second half with a lot of baskets coming from Joachim and Siemon in the paint. Riki also had a strong game at PG and Harun from our U15's team came on late to score a handful and Garden took the game by 25 points. 4

5 Final: U18A GIS 43 AISM 41 MoM: John Granda GIS have played AISM 3 times this season and lost all 3, but the last 2 were close and it had given us the opportunity to get our tactics right for this game. The whole team agreed that we could only win if we got our defensive strategy right, as their offence was strong. And that is what happened! The team stuck to the strategy for the whole game, with John Granda and Wui Herng manning AISM's top scorer for the whole game. The guards on defence also tightened up at high court to minimise AISM's driving PG's effectiveness and with high scoring games from inside the paint again, GIS managed to secure the victory by 2 points in a nail-biting finale that saw Seung Won make 2 decisive free-throws in the final seconds of the game. A massive team effort and GIS were deserved Boys U18 basketball back to back ISAC champions.. 5

6 U15 ISAC Finals Special Report - Monday February 6th 2017 Semi Final: U15A GIS 40 ISKL A 39 MoM: Yi Xuan Chia The U15 Boys team had picked up silver the previous 2 years and after seeing the U18s secure gold the day before, they were extra motivated to win this year. They were drawn against ISKL A in the Semi-finals, a team they have failed to beat for the previous 2 years. They had some talented ball-handlers that were able to penetrate throughout the first half, meaning GIS trailed at halftime. After a switch in defensive strategy to a man on man and with 2 of ISKL s players fouling out, GIS began to find their form and the fourth quarter went backwards and forwards until the end. A particularly good rebounding quarter for Siddharth in the 4th and some great driving basketball from the guards brought the game level with seconds to go. A late foul sent Yi Xuan to the line and he made one of his free throws to edge GIS into the lead and ultimately win the game. A strong performance against the home side from all the boys! Final: 6

7 U15A GIS 35 KLASS A 23 MoM: Seung Won You KLASS got a bye into the final as their opponents in the Semi-finals were late arriving to the tournament. This mean GIS had to play a fresh team straight after a tough Semi-final with ISKL. They fell behind to KLASS over the first 2 quarters but slowly began to find their momentum with help from the bench. Chanwoo, Charles and Yan Yu did well to cover and scored some important baskets to put GIS up by 1 heading into the final quarter. Using the half court trap defense, Ali was switched to the back and made a number of important steals to help the team run away with the game in the final minutes and prove their dominance in this age category. A well deserved victory by the boys, who produced their best basketball when the pressure was on. A great year for the team after picking up the silver medal at the FOBISIA games earlier in the season. 7

8 Girls Basketball U13A GIS 6 MKIS A 6 The first game of the season for the girls U13 was held at MKIS and it was a chance for a lot of the players to play their first competitive fixture for the Dragons. They were really strong on defence, managing to hold a talented MKIS team to only 6 points. It was also very encouraging to see a lot of offensive chances created and the team showed great potential in their first real game together. There is a good mix of year 7 and 8 s in the team and they worked well together to battle out a draw here at MKIS. 8

9 U13B GIS 8 MKIS B 4 The B team had a great first game of the season and played some brilliant attacking basketball with the help of our Point Guard QiQi Saw. After taking an early lead, the Dragons never looked like losing and they went on to win comfortably in a quick 2 half friendly against the MKIS girls B team. All players got minutes on the court and they created many opportunities on offence, penetrating the defence regularly. A good start to the season by all the girls at this age group. 9

10 U13 Football - Boys A team Friday 20th January - Friendly vs Tenby GIS Won 3-1 Friday 3rd February - Friendly Match BSKL The boys got off to a slow start conceding three quick goals and going into the first break 3-0 down. After a pep talk from the coach, our team ran back onto the pitch and improved on their mistakes, winning the second third 1-0 with a goal from Rohan Woghiren. With morales raised high, they started the final third well with an incredible strike, from range, by Robert Doughty, which flew straight into the top corner. The final stages of the game were an intense period of time, where BSKL only lead 3-2. However, the British School eventually came out on top and scored two late goals to make the final score 5-2. Saturday 4th February - ISAC Tenby International School Only a day after their previous fixture, our U13A boys dragons football team looked to improve on their last result at this year's ISAC Football tournament hosted by Tenby. The first game saw them face Tenby's 'A' team, a team they had already previously beaten. Therefore, the boys were full of frustration to end the game at 0-0, with our team having created many chances and the opposition playing very defensively. The boys looked to improve on the previous match against their next opponent, The Alice Smith School - KLASS. The game was neck and neck with both schools having many efforts and some even going out off the woodwork. In the final stages, KLASS scored a late goal to end the game as 1-0 victors, which left our boys disappointed. 10

11 Their last game of the day was against BSKL, the team they had recently faced less than 24 hours before the game. The boys got off to a great start by going into the halftime break with a 1-0 lead, a brilliant finish from Dudley Beaugard. They then continued with the same momentum at the start of the second half and scored another to put them 2-0 ahead, a second goal for Dudley. However, BSKL scored two quick-fire goals to bring the score level, and the game ended that way, at 2-2. The boys played brilliantly and were unlucky to finish the day without a win. However, they did manage to finish in third place, collecting their bronze medals for their achievement on the pitch. MVP was Dudley Beaugard, but credit to the whole team for their effort and performance. U13 Football - Boys B & C team Friday 3rd February - friendly vs ELC A team The first B and C team matches of the season was away at ELC school against a very good A team. It was an opponent we knew nothing about but we were still excited to be playing for the Dragons in our new navy Dragons kit. In the blistering heat we gave our best, and played some good football at times. However ELC were too strong for us on the day and won convincingly in the end. However it was our first experience playing football for school and we enjoyed it. Our coach Jord and Stefan from 1MCC helped us learn from our experience so we can improve for our next match. Saturday 4th February - ISAC Tenby International School It was the B team s first proper tournament and we were looking forward to playing again after our friendly the day before. It was another hot day but we were still happy and raring to go, this time coach Van took the team for us. We played much better than our last game which made us feel good. We drew 2-2 with BSKL, 0-0 with Tenby and lost narrowly to KLASS 1-0. Goals coming from Alex Jakobsen, and Chen Jae. MVP was our goalkeeper Mahan. Overall it was very positive. 11

12 U13 Football - Girls B & C team Friday 3rd February - friendly vs ELC A team Like the boys it was the first B and C team matches of the season was away at ELC school. They were much better than we expected, I think it was their A; team, but we were ready for the challenge. However ELC were too good and scored a lot of goals. It was our first time playing Dragons football and we enjoyed it even though we lost and it was very hot. Saturday 4th February - ISAC Tenby International School This was the B team s first tournament and we looking forward to playing. Our first game was against KLASS who were a very good team. We tried our best and played really well, making it difficult for the KLASS players. However they beat us 2-0, but we still played well. Our next game was against our A team. We lost that game 4-0 but for most of the game it was quite close until the end. We only had 2 games but we definitely played much better than Friday s friendly which we were happy about. MVPs were Alice, Daphne and Ellie. 12

13 Primary Sport Our year 6 boys travelled to ISKL on Tuesday 7th February for a friendly football fixture. The game finished 0-0 after a competitive contest saw our boys create numerous chances but were unfortunate not to convert. Our year 5 boys are continuing to develop and were unlucky to lose 2-0 to a more physical ISKL side. 15 Touch Rugby U19 Dragons Touch Team Friendly Tournament at ISKL On Saturday ISKL hosted a friendly tournament for KLASS, GIS, MKIS and travelling team Marlborough. The students, captained by Layla Duckett, showed great determination and resilience in some tough games. Most noteworthy was our last game, after a disappointing finish against Marlborough the Dragons dusted themselves off to play some of their greatest touch to date. Improved speed of rucking and urgency led to a try against ISKL in the opening seconds by Y13 L.Duckett, joining her sister, Maya on the scoresheet. This was the highlight of the day and gained us a HUGE cheer from the crowd. Despite going on to lose this game against a strong ISKL side, GIS came away knowing they couldn t have done any more. 16 Rugby U15 ISAC Finals Report - Saturday February 4th 2017 This Saturday the U15A & B teams competed at this years ISAC Finals. It was made up of 3 schools and included a total of 4 teams. GIS were proud to put out half of the teams playing showing that we are amongst the schools consistently trying to create opportunities for all our students to compete. The U15B s started the competition with a tough opening game against KLASS A team but performed superbly eventually losing by The U15A started their tournament against a vastly improving BSKL. A slow start eventually subsided before Zu Yan Tee and Steen Ledger began to take control of the game whilst Brian Soo and Muham Sidqi pulled the strings in attack. 16

17 Perhaps the most exciting game of the tournament was the repeat fixture of the U15B team vs BSKL A Team. On both occasions, The GIS team have led by a score at half time to be pipped on the last play of the game. Revan Senaratne and Viktor Frantzen were outstanding in attack and the boys can be proud of their efforts. Our U15A team met KLASS in the final and showed that the gap has certainly closed. KLASS eventually won 22-7 Primary Inter-house Sport 17

18 YEAR 3 END BALL On Tuesday morning Y3 took part in their first team house sports competition. It was a change from the usual multi skills stations, and gave students the opportunity to play cooperatively and competitively in a game reminiscent of netball in an end ball competition. Students and Teachers alike showed excellent house spirit throughout the morning. Click on the link here to see the primary house standings from Term 1. Primary U11 Football 18

19 Our U11 boys kicked off the 2017 football campaign with an impressive win over our near neighbours International School Park city (ISP). The end result saw our boys come away with a 3-1 victory after going 3 nil ahead. The boys played some attractive passing football which resulted in goals from Luke Martin and a brace from Matthew Tang. This was very much a developmental fixture as we look forward to ISAC and FOBISIA and embark on the difficult task of choosing squads. With the evolution of more than one squad this year, it will allow greater numbers of budding footballers to represent the school and become Dragons. Trainings and fixtures will continue every Wednesday from 2:30-3:30pm, all pupils in years 5 and 6 are welcome to attend. GIS Sport Social Media 19
