2 Celebrate Red Ribbon Week! October 28 th November 1st In an effort to show our commitment to living drug free, the students, faculty and staff at Pine Forest Elementary will continue this tradition by celebrating Red Ribbon Week, October 28 th November 1 st. We will have many activities at school that will help spread our message of: One School, One Goal ~ Bully and Drug Free! We ask that you take time to reinforce positive, healthy choices for life at home. History of Red Ribbon Week In 1985, the assassination of U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency agent Enrique Camarena enraged many Americans. Young students in his hometown began wearing red ribbons in his memory. The message of the red ribbons was simple: Take a stand against the loss of life and energy to drug abuse. That message and its symbol, the red ribbon, spread rapidly. In 1988, the National Family Partnership took the Red Ribbon celebration nationwide. Since then, Red Ribbon Week has been listed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a National health observance and has been touching millions of children, families, and communities across the Nation. The week calls upon all citizens to become aware of the drug problems in their communities and to show their support and commitment by wearing a Red Ribbon. Pay to Play Storybook Character Day 4 th Annual PFE Pay to Play Storybook Character Day Thursday, October 31 Students can pay $1.00 to wear their favorite storybook character costume to school on October 31st. Remember: no frightening costumes, masks, or face painting. Save your costume props for trick or treating. No costume props may be brought to school. Come ready to show off your favorite storybook character! Turn your $1.00 into your homeroom teacher by Wednesday, October 30th. Help us brighten someone else s day, proceeds go to Unicef.

3 Present Punctual Panthers Party It's time to celebrate! The students who have zero tardies and less than two unexcused absences will get to participate in our first Present Punctual Panthers Party of the year on Friday, 11/1. Nurse News for Panther Parents! Thank you for bringing your child's medication to the clinic! Just a reminder for those who may need to bring medication this school year: 1) Safety First! Please have an adult hand deliver medication and NEVER place in backpack. 2) Please check the expiration date. 3) Please visit my website and click on 'Medication forms' for full HISD guidelines. 4) Please have child's physician sign appropriate medication forms when needed (you may download them or pick them up!). 5) All medication must be picked up at the end of the year or be discarded. 6 Thank You! The Fifth Grade Manner s Banquet was a huge success this year. We greatly appreciate Kevin Kilgore for graciously allowing our fifth graders to have our Manner s Banquet at The Overlook. All of the students and guests enjoyed the delicious food and the scenery was picturesque. Fifth grade would also like to thank our wonderful PTA and special parent volunteers for everything they did to help make Manner s Banquet unforgettable for our students. A special thank you goes out to the Manner s Banquet Committee: Tara Colescott, Starla Bridges, Heather Keating for the photography, Mary Lallier, and Laurie Searcy for the beautiful invitations and place cards.
