It marked the fourth time this season the Tigers have been shut out. Drew Smyly started for Detroit and took the loss after allowing one run on four hits, walking three and striking out two in 6.0 innings. Alex Avila was 2x3 with a double to lead the Tigers offense. Nick Castellanos, Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Martinez and Andrew Romine each added a hit in the loss. The Tigers and Twins play game two of their three-game weekend series this afternoon. Following this weekend s series, the Tigers continue their sevengame homestand as they host Kansas City for a four-game series, which begins on Monday. QUALITY START FOR SMYLY, BUT A LOSS: Drew Smyly turned in his second straight quality start in last night s game vs. Minnesota, but took the loss after giving up one run on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. It marked the eighth time in Smyly s career that he has tossed 6.0-or-more innings while allowing one run-or-fewer and the second time in as many starts. He became the seventh pitcher in Tigers history to capture the ERA crown and the first since Justin Verlander did so with a 2.40 ERA in SURPASSING 200: Sanchez ended the 2013 season with 202 strikeouts, to surpass the 200-or-more strikeout mark for the second time in his career. JOINS FELLER WITH FIVE LOW-HIT GAMES IN FIRST 155: Sanchez fired a one-hitter in his outing on May 24th, 2013 against the Minnesota Twins, marking the fourth one-hitter of his major league career to go along with his no-hitter on September 6, 2006 versus Arizona. The outing was the 155th of his career and he joined Bob Feller as one of just two pitchers since at least 1916 to record five complete games allowing one hit-or-fewer in the first 155 games of their major league career. HISTORIC STRIKEOUT PERFORMANCE VERSUS ATLANTA: Sanchez recorded 17 strikeouts over eight shutout innings in his outing on April 26, 2013 against the Atlanta Braves, establishing the franchise record for strikeouts in a single game.
