With the game ed 1-1 in the bo om of the eighth inning, J.D. Mar nez launched the first pitch he saw for a pinch hit solo home run to put the Tigers in front 2-1. Ian Kinsler had two hits in the win, while Nick Castellanos went 1x3 with a double and a RBI. Shane Greene recorded his second win of the season, striking out two in 1.1 perfect innings of relief. Francisco Rodriguez worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bo om of the ninth inning to notch his 30th save of the season. The Tigers and White Sox conclude their three-game series this a ernoon. ZIMMERMANN ACTIVATED FROM DL, MOLLEKEN OPTIONED: The Tigers today have ac vated righthanded pitcher Jordan Zimmermann from the 15-day disabled list. Zimmermann made two injury rehab starts with Triple A Toledo and had a 1.13 ERA (8.0IP/1ER) with three strikeouts. In a corresponding move, the Tigers op oned righthanded pitcher Dus n Molleken to Toledo following last night's game. TIGERS-RED SOX GAME ON AUGUST 21 TO BE TELEVISED BY TBS: The Tigers game vs. Boston on Sunday, August 21, will be televised by TBS. The game will also be televised locally on FOX Sports Detroit. First pitch for the game remains at 1:10 p.m. VERLANDER NAMED AL PITCHER OF THE MONTH FOR JULY: Jus n Verlander was named the American League Pitcher of the Month for July on Wednesday. Verlander started six games during July and compiled a 4-0 record with a 1.69 ERA (42.2IP/8ER) and 48 strikeouts. Verlander led the AL with 48 strikeouts in July, while he was ed for the AL lead with 42.2 innings pitched, second with a.171 opponents ba ng average, ed for second with a 0.89 WHIP, third with a 1.69 ERA and ed for third with four wins. The award marked the fi h me in Verlander s career that he has been named AL Pitcher of the Month (last, September, 2012). WELCOME BACK J.D.: J.D. Mar nez wasted li le me making an impact upon his return to the Tigers as he hit the first pitch he saw in the eighth inning for a pinch hit solo homer. The pinch hit homer was the second of his career (other, May 19, 2014). It also marked his sixth career go-ahead home run in the eighth inning-or-later (last, September 8, 2015 vs. Tampa Bay). K-ROD REACHES 900 CAREER APPEARANCES: Francisco Rodriguez made the 900th appearance of his major league career last night, throwing a scoreless inning with one hit allowed, two walks and one strikeout to notch his 30th save of the season. Rodriguez became the 25th pitcher in MLB history to appear in 900-or-more games. Rodriguez has now saved 30-or-more games in a season for the eighth me in his career, which is ed for the sixth most seasons in MLB history. Rodriguez ranks second in the American League with 30 saves, while he is fourth with a 93.8 save percentage, having successfully converted 30-of-32 save opportuni es this season. Over his last 15 appearances, Rodriguez has a 0.60 ERA (15.0IP/1ER) with 14 strikeouts and is holding opponents to a.157 (8x51) ba ng average during that stretch.
