Tom Brunansky s double in the seventh inning was the only hit for the Twins. Larry Herndon and Darrell Evans hit back-to-back homers in the fourth. RECENT RESULTS: The Tigers were shut out by the Astros, 3-0, in the series opener last night at Minute Maid Park. Mike Fiers recorded a quality start, but suffered his sixth loss of the season a er giving up three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Offensively, Ronny Rodriguez had a pair of hits, Jeimer Candelario, Nicholas Castellanos, John Hicks, JaCoby Jones and James McCann each had one hit. The Tigers and Astros play the second game of their threegame series this a ernoon. Following this weekend s series against Houston and the All-Star break from Monday-Thursday, Detroit begins the second half of the season next weekend with a three-game series vs. Boston (July 20-22). NICK THE STICK: Nicholas Castellanos reached base in three plate appearances last night, going 1x2 with two walks. Castellanos has hit safely in five straight games, ba ng.389 (7x18) with five runs scored, three doubles, one home run and two RBI during the stretch. GREAT BALLS OF FIERS: Mike Fiers turned in his fourth consecu ve quality start and his eighth of the season last night, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits with two strikeouts in 6.0 innings. Fiers has allowed three runs-or-less in eight of his last nine starts da ng back to May 30, pos ng a 2.75 ERA (55.2IP/17ER) with 44 strikeouts. Among American League pitchers during that me period, Fiers ranks fourth in innings pitched and fi h in ERA. FIRE THE McCANNON: James McCann threw out Tony Kemp a emp ng to steal second base in the fourth inning of last night s game. McCann now has 13 catcher caught stealings on the season, which ranks second in the American League, trailing only Oakland s Jonathan Lucroy (16). Since the start of the 2015 season, McCann ranks ed for second with Kansas City s Salvador Perez among ac ve catchers with 80 catcher caught stealings, trailing only Lucroy (96). ZIP, ZERO, ZILCH, NADA: The Tigers suffered their 12th shutout of the season last night at Houston, equaling their total from the 2017 season. Detroit s 12 shutouts are the most in the Majors. WALKING ON SUNSHINE: The Tigers today will play their Major League leading 48th day game of the season (out of 97 games, 49.5%). Detroit has posted a (.489) record in the day me this season, as opposed to (.347) at night. The Tigers have lost nine of their last 12 day games. HEY NOW, YOU RE AN ALL-STAR: Joe Jiménez was selected as an American League All-Star for the first me in his career on Sunday. In 44 appearances this season, Jiménez has posted a 4-1 record with three saves, a 2.85 ERA (41.0IP/13ER) and 46 strikeouts. He has limited opponents to a.224 (35x156) ba ng average and has a 1.15 WHIP. Jiménez currently ranks ed for seventh in the American League with 44 appearances, while he is ed for ninth among AL relievers with four wins. At 23 years old, Jiménez is the youngest Tigers all-star since 1992, when Travis Fryman was selected to the All-Star Team at the age of 23. IGGY VS.
