Starter Jordan Zimmermann (L, 7-11) threw 5.0 innings and allowed seven earned runs on nine hits with one walk and no strikeouts. Gary Sánchez homered again in the 1st inning, giving the Yankees an early 1-0 lead. The Bronx Bombers plated five runs on five hits in the 3rd inning, including a tworun single by Sanchez, an RBI double by Aaron Judge, an RBI single by Didi Gregorius, and a sac fly by Chase Headley. Gregorius ripped a solo HR to right in the 5th inning and Ronald Torreyes hit an RBI single in the 6th to give the Yankees an 8-0 lead. Ian Kinsler finally got the Tigers on the board with a solo home run in the 6th inning. Headley responded with another solo shot in the 7th inning and Aaron Hicks hit a two-out RBI single in the 8th to make it José Iglesias added a solo homer in the 9th inning, but that was all the offense Detroit could muster. TIGERS TRANSACTIONS: Following last night s game, the Tigers op oned LHP Chad Bell to triple-a Toledo. RHP Zac Reininger had his contract selected from Toledo today and will wear #26 for Detroit. ROLLING SOLO: Tigers second baseman Ian Kinsler slugged his 13th home run of the season last night, a leadoff shot in the 6th inning. Strangely, all of Kinsler s home runs this season have been of the solo variety, making him the first Major League player to begin a season with 13-or-more solo home runs since CIN s Shin-Soo Choo in 2013 (first 14). STRUGGLE BUS: The Tigers have lost eight of their last nine games and 14 of their last 17 (since August 5th) to fall to 17 games under.500 (54-71) for the first me since the end of the 2005 season when they finished (.438). RUN D.E.T.: Since the All-Star break, Detroit has allowed 226 runs in 38 games (5.95 RPG), most among all American League teams. Only the Cincinna Reds have surrendered more (254 R in 39 G). The Tigers have the highest opponents average in the majors over that stretch (.290, 387x1334) and have allowed double-digit run totals in eight of their 38 second-half games, including four of their last seven. A BITE FROM THE BIG APPLE: A er shu ng out the Yankees in their last game in New York on August 2, the Tigers have been outscored 23-6 (-17) over the first two games of this series in Detroit. The Yankees have jumped out to leads of 7-0 and 8-0, respec vely, in those two games before the Tigers could put a run on the board. Detroit has now lost each of their last three series against the Yankees at Comerica Park (1-3, 1-2, 0-2 in first 3 G this season). Earlier this month, the Tigers took two of three games at Yankee Stadium, marking the first me they have won back-to-back series in New York since May 14 to June 23, 1974 (2-0 & 2-1). The 2017 inaugural scholarship recipients of the Miguel Cabrera Family Scholarship are Deepa Day and Donnell Williams: *Deepa Day first genera on college student from the Detroit Interna onal Academy. From a Bangladeshi family, Deepa s parents do not speak English. Despite financial and family hardships, and despite being bullied because she could not speak English when first coming to the United States, Deepa maintained a 4.0 grade point average in high school and was named to the Honor Roll and Principal s List while also maintaining Prefect A endance, working at Greening of Detroit, and being ac ve in 4-H Club and Junior ROTC. Deepa plans to a end Wayne State University and study Psychology with the goal of becoming a psychiatrist. *Donnell Williams first genera on college student from Riverview Community High School. Raised in a single-parent household, Donnell overcame financial hardship and home life instability to maintain a 4.1 grade point average in high school while playing varsity football for three years and varsity basketball for four years. As a student-athlete, Donnell was named Academic All-District, All-Region and All-State in 2016, was captain of the both the Football and Basketball team ad was a member of the Na onal Honor Roll despite tearing two ligaments in his le knee that required surgery and le him on pain media on and in a wheelchair for a month. Donnell plans to a end the University of Michigan and study biology with the goal of becoming an anesthesiologist. LAST TIME OUT: Fulmer was the tough-luck loser in his last start on Saturday vs. Los Angeles (NL), allowing one unearned run on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 7.0 innings. VS. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, the streak was the second longest by a rookie star ng pitcher since 1971, trailing only a streak of 35.0 scoreless innings by Fernando Valenzuela during the 1981 season. COMPLETE GAME SHUTOUT: Fulmer threw the first complete game and shutout of his career on August 14, 2016 at Texas, sca ering four hits and striking out nine. Fulmer became the first Tigers rookie pitcher to throw a shutout since Jus n Verlander on May 22, 2006 at Kansas City and he joined Philadelphia's Zach Eflin and Colorado's Jon Gray as the only Major League rookies to throw a shutout last season.
