Minnesota took the lead with three runs in the third inning as Joe Mauer had a RBI single, Robbie Grossman had a RBI double and Eddie Rosario hit a run-scoring sacrifice fly. The Twins tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning and one run in the seventh to take a 6-0 lead. Detroit s offense came to life in the top of the eighth inning as the team sent 10 men to the plate in a five-run frame. Alex Presley hit a RBI ground-rule double, while Jus n Upton blasted a three-run home run and James McCann scored on an error. The comeback came up one run short as the Tigers were unable to push the tying run across in the ninth inning against Twins closer, Brandon Kintzler. Jordan Zimmermann (L, 6-8) started and allowed five runs on nine hits with four walks and one strikeout in 3.2 innings. STREAKING: Alex Presley had three hits in last night s game to extend his hi ng streak to a season-long nine games. During the streak, Presley is hi ng.438 (14x32) with five runs scored, four doubles and three RBI. The streak is the second longest of his career, trailing only a 12-game hi ng streak from April 14-28, THE BOOK ON MAHTOOK: Tigers ou ielder Mikie Mahtook has been on a roll over the last month of the season. Since June 21, Mahtook is ba ng.361 (26x72) with 11 runs scored, three doubles, two triples, two home runs and 10 RBI in 21 games, raising his season average from.231 to.288 in the process. He has hit safely in 17 of the 19 games in which he had at least one at-bat over that stretch, including eight mul -hit games. J-UP, UP AND AWAY: Jus n Upton belted his 16th home run of the season in last night s game, hi ng a three-run shot in the eighth inning. Last season, Upton didn t hit his 16th homer un l August 25. BRUCE ALMIGHTY: Bruce Rondón pitched a scoreless inning with one strikeout in last night s game. Since being recalled from Triple A Toledo, Rondón has recorded a scoreless ou ng in nine-of-10 appearances, pos ng a 2.79 ERA (9.2IP/3ER) and allowing just six hits with 15 strikeouts. TIGERS AND TWINS: In their last 32 games against the Minnesota Twins, the Tigers have gone 23-9 (.719), which is the third-best winning percentage by any Major League team against a divisional opponent over that stretch (since September 15, 2015). Only the Cubs (.774, 24-7 vs CIN) and Astros (.735, 25-9 vs OAK) have be er marks. The Tigers have outhit the Twins 316 to 229 (+77) in those 32 games, while the bullpen has also been a bright spot with a 2.51 ERA (111.1IP/31ER). Overall, Detroit is in 10 series versus Minnesota during that period, including wins in each of their last three (4-0-1 in last five). In their last 16 games at Target Field, the Tigers have gone 14-2 and have outscored the Twins (+53) over the 16 games. NORRIS INJURY REHAB UPDATE: Le handed pitcher Daniel Norris will make an injury rehab start for Triple A Toledo today at Rochester. In his first injury rehab start on Tuesday at Pawtucket, Norris allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 3.0 innings.
