RHP James Shields, who is 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA (4 ER/26.1 IP) in four career starts against his former team, is scheduled to start for the White Sox. The Sox have won the fi rst two games of this series by one run each, including a come-from-behind, 2-1 victory last night. Following today's game, the White Sox return to Chicago for six games in seven days vs. the Yankees (8/6-8) and Cleveland (8/10-12). The Sox went 2-4 on their last homestand vs. Toronto (1-2) and Kansas City (1-2) from 7/27-8/2 and 3-4 on their last trip from 7/20-26 at Seattle (1-2) and the Angels (2-2). TODAY'S STORYLINES The White Sox are in position to record their fi rst three-game sweep since 8/8-10/17 vs. Houston and fi rst on the road since 4/25-27/16 at Toronto. The Sox have recorded back-to-back wins with five hits or less for the fi rst time since 7/9-10/15 vs. Toronto and at the Cubs. The White Sox have won fi ve of their last eight road games after losing 12 of their previous 14. Sox starting pitchers own a 1.35 ERA (3 ER/20.0 IP) over the last three games, allowing 10 hits. Twelve of the last 13 games between the White Sox and Rays have been decided by two runs or less. José Abreu has homered in a career-high tying three straight games (third time) and is hitting.404/.462/.894 (19-47) with fi ve doubles, six home runs, 11 RBI and 14 runs scored over his last 12 games Abreu has nine homers and 29 RBI in 29 career games vs. Tampa Bay. LAST NIGHT'S RECAP Tim Anderson led off the ninth inning with a double and scored the winning run on a Matt Duffy throwing error on Leury García's bunt single as the White Sox defeated Tampa Bay, 2-1. Carlos Rodón posted a no decision, allowing one unearned run on three hits over 6.0 IP to lower his ERA to 1.56 (6 ER/34.2 IP) over his last fi ve starts, best in the major leagues. José Abreu homered for the third straight game, a solo shot off Blake Snell to tie the game at 1-1. Juan Minaya retired all fi ve batters he faced, Xavier Cedeño earned his second win in as many appearances, and Thyago Vieira pitched a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts for his fi rst career save Vieira and Atlanta's Luis Gohara (one in 2018) as the only Brazilians in major-league history to record a save. SHIELDS, 10 YEARS LATER James Shields returns to Tropicana Field this weekend to help celebrate the 10-year anniversary of Tampa Bay's 2008 club, which won the American League East title and reached the World Series in its fi rst-ever postseason berth. Shields, who was selected by the Rays in the 16th round of the 2000 draft, is the franchise leader in numerous categories, including wins (87), IP (1,454.2), starts (217), strikeouts (1,250), complete games (19), shutouts (8) and quality starts (132) and pickoffs (24). PROSPECT PROWESS The White Sox farm system is ranked as No. 3 in baseball according to MLB Pipeline's updated rankings and includes seven of the Top 100 prospects. OF Eloy Jiménez (No. 3), RHP Michael Kopech (13), OF Luis Robert (25), INF Nick Madrigal (32), RHP Dylan Cease (44), RHP Dane Dunning (64) and OF Blake Rutherford (88) all are ranked in MLB Pipeline's Top 100. LAST NIGHT ON THE FARM Class AA Birmingham RHP Dylan Cease threw 6.0 scoreless IP vs. Mobile, allowing just one hit with no walks and nine strikeouts Cease is 2-0 with a 1.00 ERA (4 ER/36.0 IP) and 51 strikeouts over his last six starts. Class A Winston-Salem INF Nick Madrigal, the Sox first-round draft pick (No. 4 overall), struck out last night for the fi rst time in his professional career in his 73rd plate appearance (20th game). HOMER HAPPY The White Sox have homered in 13 of their last 14 games (21 total) and have hit 37 in their last 26 (since 7/3), tied for the fi fth-highest total in the major leagues. José Abreu has hit six home runs in his last 12 games, Avisaíl García has 10 homers in his last 27, and Daniel Palka has connected on nine in his last 23. WHITE SOX VS. TAMPA BAY The White Sox have won three straight games to take a 3-2 lead in the season series. The Sox are in position to record their fi rst three-game sweep at Tropicana Field since 5/28-30/12. All fi ve games have been decided by one run. The White Sox are hitting.205/.309/.366 (33-161) with a 2.54 ERA (13 ER/46.0 IP) and have outscored the Rays, The Sox lead the all-time series, they are in Chicago and in Tampa Bay. LOOKING FOR AN EDGE VS. THE EAST The White Sox are vs. the American League East since 2007, with their only winning record during that span coming in 2016 (19-14). The Sox are 9-9 vs. the AL East this season (5-3 on the road) and have won fi ve of their last six games. 20/20/20/20/20 VISION José Abreu is attempting to become the 18th player in majorleague history to hit 20-plus home runs in each of his fi rst fi ve seasons Pete Incaviglia ( ), Eddie Murray ( ), Tony Conigliaro (196469), Ted Williams ( , 1946) and Joe DiMaggio ( ) are the only players to accomplish the feat exclusively in the American League (source: Baseball Reference). Abreu already is the fi rst player in White Sox history to hit 20-plus home runs in each of his fi rst four seasons. DOUBLE TROUBLE José Abreu has joined Magglio Ordóñez ( ) as the only players in White Sox history to hit 30-plus doubles in fi ve straight seasons he and Matt Carpenter are the only players to hit 30-plus doubles in each of the last fi ve seasons ( ). Abreu also has joined Frank Thomas (nine), Paul Konerko (eight), Ordóñez (five), Ray Durham (five), Willie Kamm (five) and Bibb Falk (fi ve) as the only players in Sox history with fi ve-plus seasons of 30-plus doubles. PILING UP CROOKED NUMBERS Yoán Moncada is one of eight major-league players this season to record at least 20 doubles, fi ve triples, 10 homers, 45 RBI and 10 stolen bases, joining the Cubs Javier Báez, Boston's Andrew Benintendi and Colorado's Trevor Story. STOLEN BASE STOLEN BASE! The White Sox rank fi fth in the major-leagues this season with 77 stolen bases and are the only team to feature five players with 10 or more steals. The last time five or more Sox players recorded 10-plus stolen bases was 2005 (Jermaine Dye, Willie Harris, Tadahito Iguchi, Pablo Ozuna, Scott Podsednik and Aaron Rowand). POWER AND SPEED Tim Anderson (14 /21 SB) is one of seven players in the major leagues this season with at least 14 home runs and 20 stolen bases, joining Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts, Starling Marte, José Ramírez, Mike Trout and Trea Turner. Anderson, who is on pace for 21 homers and 31 steals, is looking to join Alex Ríos (2010) and Tommie Agee (1966) as the only players in White Sox history to record 20-plus homers and 30-plus steals in one season. QUALITY AND QUANTITY The White Sox have made a major-league leading 1,363 quality starts since the start of the 2003 season, three more than the second-place New York Mets (1,360) and 45 more than Oakland (1,1318), the next-closest American League team.
