RHP James Shields takes the mound for the White Sox, who are off to their worst 15-game start since 1997 (also 4-11). Following this three-game series, the Sox conclude the homestand with three games vs. Seattle (4/23-25) before taking a seven-game, seven-day trip to Kansas City (4/26-29, DH on 4/28) and St. Louis (5/1-2). Chicago is coming off an 0-4 trip to Minnesota (0-1, three postponements) and Oakland (0-3), which ended on Wednesday with a loss to the A's in 14 innings. The Sox went 1-5 on the fi rst homestand of the season vs. Detroit (0-3) and Tampa Bay (1-2) from 4/5-11. TONIGHT'S STORYLINES James Shields is 2-2 with a 2.11 ERA (10 ER/42.2 IP) and 51 strikeouts in six career starts against Houston. Chicago has won four straight home games vs. Houston and is 12-6 overall since 2015, posting a 2.47 ERA (45 ER/164.0 IP). The Sox are playing their first home night game of the season. White Sox starters rank last in the American League with a 5.59 ERA (48 ER/77.1 IP) Sox pitchers have issued 81 walks, tied with the Angels for the most in the AL. The Sox have hit three of its 20 home runs this season at home, tied with Baltimore and St. Louis for the fewest in the majors. Yoán Moncada hit.400/.538/.750 (8-20) with two home runs, fi ve RBI and fi ve runs scored in six games vs. Houston in ROSTER MOVES The White Sox made a pair of trades on Thursday, acquiring OF Trayce Thompson from Oakland for cash considerations and sending INF Tyler Saladino to Milwaukee in return for cash. Thompson, 27, was designated for assignment by Oakland on 4/17 Saladino, 28, appeared in six games (three starts) this season, going 2-8 (.250) with a double and two runs scored. WORKHORSE James Shields is scheduled to start tonight's game after finishing Wednesday's loss at Oakland in relief. According to STATS LLC, Shields will become the 11th Sox pitcher since 1940 to achieve that feat and the fi rst since Gene Nelson on 4/27/86 at Detroit (1.1 IP) and 4/29 at Baltimore (6.2). Tom Seaver (5/9/84 vs. Milwaukee) was the previous White Sox pitcher to do so Seaver pitched a scoreless 25th inning to earn the win against the Brewers in the resumption of a suspended game from 5/8 and then threw 8.1 IP later that day to earn the victory in the regularly scheduled game vs. Milwaukee. WEDNESDAY'S RECAP Matt Olson hit a game-ending single off James Shields with two outs in the 14th inning as Oakland completed a three-game sweep with a victory over the White Sox. The A's overcame a pair of fi ve-run defi cits to take an lead on Jed Lowrie's two-run homer off Luis Avilán in the eighth, but Tim Anderson tied the game with a RBI single off Blake Treinen in the ninth. Starter Carson Fulmer lasted just 1.0 IP, allowing four runs on fi ve hits and two walks, but Chris Volstad (3.1 IP) and Bruce Rondón (career-high 3.0 IP) each made scoreless appearances. Yoán Moncada hit his fi rst career grand slam to tie his career high with four RBI, while José Abreu and Nicky Delmonico collected three hits apiece. The Sox went 8-20 with RISP (5-62 in previous eight games). MORE FROM WEDNESDAY Wednesday's 14-inning loss at Oakland lasted 5:48, the fourthlongest game in White Sox history and longest since a 19-inning victory on 7/9/06 vs. Boston lasted 6:19 (see box at right). The White Sox used a franchise-record 10 pitchers (Elias). The Sox fi ve stolen bases were their most since 9/5/10 at Boston (six). According to Elias, Yoán Moncada became the fi fth-youngest player in Sox history (22 years, 326 days) to hit a grand slam (see list at right). James Shields made his second career relief appearance (6/19/10 at Florida with Tampa Bay). ON THE FARM OF Blake Rutherford went 4-5 with a career-high four RBI last night to lead Class A Winston-Salem to a 9-5 victory vs. Salem. Rutherford, the No. 7 prospect in the Sox system per MLB Piepline, is 7-10 (.700) over his last two games to raise his average to.404 (19-47), best in the Carolina League. OF Micker Adolfo (No. 10 prospect) ranks second in the CL with 14 RBI and has reached base safely in all 15 games. WHITE SOX VS. HOUSTON ASTROS The White Sox went 4-2 in 2017 (3-0 at home) to improve to 12-6 against Houston over the last three seasons. The Sox batted.248/.317/.379 with a 2.67 ERA (16 ER/54.0 IP) and outscored the Astros, The White Sox lead the all-time series, 29-23, going at Guaranteed Rate Field and in Houston (9-10 at Minute Maid Park). The Sox swept Houston in the 2005 World Series for their fi rst championship since WILD WILD WEST The White Sox are 0-3 vs. the American League West in 2018 they went last season (7-10 on the road), winning nine of their last 14 games after losing 13 of their fi rst 19. The Sox are vs. the AL West since 2008, including a record at home. QUALITY IS JOB ONE The White Sox have made a major-league leading 1,321 quality starts since the start of the 2003 season, four more than the Mets and 47 more than Oakland, the next-closest American League team. AT THE HELM Rick Renteria is in his second season after being named the 40th manager in White Sox history on 10/3/16. Renteria was the only Latino manager in the major leagues in 2017 but has been joined by Boston's Alex Cora and Washington's Dave Martinez in HAWK'S FAREWELL Ken "Hawk" Harrelson, who is in his 33rd and fi nal season in the White Sox television booth in 2018, will work primarily Sunday home games this season as well as select other contests. Harrelson will serve as a team ambassador throughout the 2019 season, marking his eighth decade in baseball. PROGRAMMING NOTES The White Sox-Twins game scheduled for 4/13 will be made up on 6/5 as part of a straight doubleheader beginning at 3:10 p.m. CT both games will air on NBCSCH. The postponment from 4/14 has been rescheduled for 9/28 as part of a split doubleheader (1:10 p.m. and 7:10 p.m. starts) WGN will carry the opener and NBCSCH the nightcap. The 4/15 postponement will be made up on 8/20 (previously a mutual off day) at 6:10 p.m., with NBCSCH carrying the game. According to Elias, Chicago and Minnesota's three straight postponements last weekend are the most in the major leagues since Seattle and Cleveland endured four in a row in April ABREU IN ELITE COMPANY José Abreu is one of three players in major-league history to begin his career with at least four consecutive seasons of 25- plus homers and 100-plus RBI, joining Joe DiMaggio ( ) and Albert Pujols. Abreu also has joined Al Simmons (11, ), Pujols (10, ), Ted Williams ( , '46-49) and DiMaggio ( ) as the only players in history to record 100 or more RBI in each of his fi rst four seasons. He led the American League with 343 total bases in 2017, joining Albert Belle (399 in 1998), Minnie Miñoso (304 in 1951) and Joe Jackson (293 in 1916) as the only players in Sox history to accomplish that feat. CALL TO THE HALL Jim Thome, who played for the White Sox from and serves as a special assistant to the general manager, will be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on 7/29/18. Thome, who ranks eighth in major-league history with 612 home runs, received 89.8 percent of the votes to become the fi fth former Sox player inducted on the fi rst ballot. He will join Chipper Jones, Vladimir Guerrero, Trevor Hoffman Jack Morris and Alan Trammell in the Class of PROSPECT PROWESS The White Sox minor-league system is rated by Baseball America as the fourth-best in baseball.
