And more problems Recently. the Faculty Senate decded to try to solve the evenng parkng problems on north campus. Some professors are fndng t dffcult to park close to ther classes at nght. ' The Transportaton Commttee made an attempt to solve the problem by suggestng that north campus be closed at nght so that teachers would have prorty when parkng. In addton, the commttee proposed that evenng parkng stckers be sold to students; havng to pay for a place to park at nght would thus reduce the number of students who would park on north campus. Student Body Presdent Ron Spvey has expressed dslke for the dea of havng yet another parkng stcker to deal wth. Spvey suggested a compromse to ease the problems of both students and faculty. Hs suggeston s to make the parkng lots north of Peele Hall, the lot south of Mann and Rddck and the lot across from Klgore reserved at nght for only faculty. The rest of the parkng lots on north campus would contnue to be open for nght students and students gong to the lbrary or the computer center. The Faculty Senate s proposal uses Spvey's compromse sort of. Its proposal suggests reservng certan parkng lots just for the faculty. But the Senate proposes to sell evenng parkng stckers as well. Once agan students are beng forced to assume the majorty of responsblty for a campus problem. The dea that faculty should have absolute prorty over students s absurd. Most of the students at State lve off campus. Ths means that many must drve to the lbrary or to nghttme classes. A large number of these nght students are I ddn't get n to see "For Colored Grls Who Have Consdered Sucde When the Ranbow ls Enuf" ether tme that I tred last weekend - t was all sold out. somehow gvng credence once more to Ntosake Shange s dengratng treatment of black men. My nterest n ths producton at State was prompted by a promse to all the beautful black brothers whom know to refute the savage pcture of black manhood whch Shange so eloquently pants. Parkng s a problem on north campus. but forcng more bureaucracy on the student body s not the best way to solve the problem. We beleve that a compromse can be worked out between students and the faculty that would not mpose unnecessary restrctons on the students. The dea to make some lots reserved just for the faculty s a far proposal. Faculty members would be wthn close walkng range of ther classes wthout havng to face the dffculty of fndng a parkng place. By the same logc. students should be allowed to have free access to a great deal of north campus parkng areas. An evenng parkng stcker would only create another expense for students already beset by too many fnancal worres. Such a stcker would mean that someone would have to patrol the lots at nght to make sure that cars actually had ther stckers. Ths would be yet another cost for the Unversty. If all of the students who usually park close to north campus were suddenly forced to park on the other sde of campus, and a large majorty of these requested Publc Safety s escort servce for protecton. the escort servce would be know. Yet. no matter how fresh and talented the troupe. the message s stll the same. In her remarkably powerful poetc style. Shange has led us to beleve that black men an't s---. lt an't so! Or, n my opnon, ths s a polcy whch reflects ths Unversty s callous ndfference to the ndvdual student's educaton needs. What logc s gven for such a polcy? To reduce enrollment? Students vctmzed by beng barred from late regstraton wll eventually make up ther course work, whch wll ncrease the enrollment of future semesters. There seems to be only one overrdng purpose n nsttutng ths polcy: to undo the problems caused by the offce of admssons' plunder, enrollng too many students n ths semester. Statstcally speakng. a certan number of students who haven't learned all the ropes of campus lfe are expected to be suspended ths sprng not because of low grades or bad conduct, but because a certan pece of red paper was not handed n two months n advance. I would lke to say that I am a doctor and I totally agee wth each of the UFS proposals mentoned. Along wth those, I have lsted here a few mnor ones of my own that could be added onto these: - Most students complan about not havng enough tme to eat decent meals becouse of constant travel between classes. I propose that the nutrent bottles be strapped. nverted. to ther backs wth gravty feedng constant lqud det of vtamnenrched nutrents through the tube drectly nto ther stomachs. Students clam never to have enough money to eat on, and yet hundreds of dollars are spent daly on electronc games. l feel that a law should be passed sayng that a student must purchase some mnmum amount of food before beng allowed to waste hs money. Not only that, but the amount that students are allowed to spend on games should be drectly proportonal to the amount of food they buy. Lack of sleep s a major cause of student sckness. l suggest mxng tme-released tranqulzers n ther food to ensure adequate sleep. My lat proposal s amed at correctng one of the sde effects of transfer from our dgestve system to drect placement of nutrents n the stomach. Though students wll no longer have to worry about cavtes, constant non-usage of jaw muscles tends to cause them to freeze up. l say that non-toxc stcks of rubber be gven to students to gnaw on to keep jaw muscles n shape. 4 Four / Techncan I'eatures December 11, 1981 Chrstmas newlne of toys for that ultra-modern kd by Med Byrd Features Wrter Today's kds. lvng n a world of radcal change and constant progress. are a dfferent breed than ther contemporares of even 20 years ago. Though the means of chld producton have changed very lttle. the adage "t hey don't make 'em lke they used to" apples readly. The modern pre-pubescent human beng can be lkened unto a large sponge. though not half as attractve or useful. He absorbs a vast array of mages and nformaton from a varety of sources. such as televson. magaznes and the backs of Captan Crunch boxes. The result s an expanded range of nterests and desres for the young person. who wants to be a part of all that he perceves. As Chrstmas nears. purchasng approprate gfts for today's kds s not a matter to be taken lghtly. A lttle nsght on the parents' part wll show that tradtonal toys are out for good. C'mon Mom and Dad. cast asde that Sears Wsh book and take a closer look at those quverng lumps of demonc flesh that you call your chldren! The proper present can make a tremendous dfference n ther future development. Dolls? Yes. they're stll around. albet n a rather off-beat way. Face t, Raggedy Ann and Baby Tny Tears have gone the way of the dodo! The modern grl won't settle for anythng less than a lfe-sze baby doll that burps up. spts up. messes up and has to be beaten up 24 hours a day. Brusable Betty" comes wth lfelke skn that dscolors and swells when struck, and has real har that can be yanked out completely by Mommy after a hard day at the offce. Tp the Rpper." a venemous, agng doll wth patented flop-omatc" har. whps out a dagger and cuts down any Republcan n sght. And for the senstve. passonate young man. the Bg Bolt Hunky Constructon Stud Set" wll produce squeals of ecstasy on Chrstmas day! A local favorte. the UNC-Chapel Hll AnHead CoEd" doll. throws off ts clothes and moans. use me. abuse me just don't confuse me" when touched or spoken to. For the more practcal chld. educatonal toys are stll the best bet. However. chemstry sets, erector kts. and other effete gfts are a sure kss of death" on Chrstmas mornng. A sensble parent wll search. for thngs that wll offer a lastng learnng experence to ther chld; For example. the "Gary Coleman Nuclear Holocaust Smulator" wll provde hours of treless entertanment and gve nformatve answers to such questons as "What would happen f Gary Coleman Want to wrte for the., 7 DO you have for features7 Gve us a call at " and ask for left. What s the mnmum lethal dose of plutonum salts needed n order to completely destroy a chld approxmately the sze of Gary Coleman?" Smart lttle grls wll adore the new E-Z Zap" portable mcrowave oven. crammed wth extra features lke the ex clusve puppopper dogge dryer and a three step amplfed pacemaker jammer. And any future doctor wll be delghted wth the Brooke Shelds Health Test Doll." Board games have also undergone a great transformaton. No longer s t desrable just to have two hotels on North Carolna Avenue and pass G0 at regular ntervals. No. today's upand-comng kd wants a game ftted wth more realstc proftmakng opportuntes. Try Torch." the fre-nsurance fraud game. or "Mr. Mortgage." where players race to foreclose on an 80-year-old wdowed cancer vctm. Grls too worred about ther own development to care about mystery dates or fashon shows wll thrll over Jane Russell's Race for Cleavage" game. wth ts fastpaced slcone mplant jackpot and Mark Eden tranng-school smulator. Kssng under mstletoe orgnates from Norse myth by Karen G. Fox Copy Edtor Lke most holdays. Chrstmas s fraugh wth tradtons. Unfortunately the reasons behnd most of these tradtons have been forgotten. Kssng under the mstletoe s one custom whch most people follow. but few know the orgn of t. Ths custom stems from ancent Norse mythology and has been carred down through the ages and nto ths country by the northern Europeans. In the ancent days of early cvlzaton. the earth was ruled by gods of wonderous wsdom, strength. beauty and power. accordng to the Norse myths. Balder was the best and purest of the gods. Hs face shown wth the radance of the sun and hs comng was lke the comng of summer.. All loved and feared hm except Loke. who was a god flled wth hatred and malce. Loke was jealous of the other gods and would often spend hs tme thnkng of ways to harm or dsgrace them. Odn. the most powerful and wse of the gods. learned the death of hs son Balder. whch was doomed to occur just before the fnal war at the end of the gods' regn, was drawng ngh. Frgg. Odn's wfe. was dstraught at the news. She traveled heaven and earth and made all thngs whch were created swear a solomn oath never to harm Balder. But fate was stronger than her motherly love, as she overlooked one lttle shrub. the mstletoe. whom she felt was too young and weak to cause any harm. Snce the gods beleved Balder could not be harm ed by anythng. they persuaded hm to stand as a target for a game m whch they threw weapons at hm. Loke was jealous of ths. He appeared to Frgg dsgused as an old woman and coerced her to tell hm the one thng whch had not promsed to refran from harmng Balder. Loke mmedately ran to the mstletoe and fashoned a dart from a sprg of t. Los then offered the dart to Hoder. Balder s blnd brother. and offered to gude hs hand so that Hoder mght also partcpate n the gods' new sport. The dart perced Balder's heart and klled hm. The skes grew dark and the gods froze n horror. For the frst tme. tears were shed n Asgard. home of the The gods sent a messenger to Hel. the goddess of the dead. to convnce her to release Balder from Nflhem. the house of the dead. Hel sad she would allow Halder to return only f every lvng thng wept for hm. The messenger returned wth Hel s decree and new messengers were sent from Asgard throughout all the worlds to say that all who loved Balder should weep for hs return. Everyone wept n Asgard, and n all the earth nothng exsted that dd not weep. Great trees. small flowers. and the beasts of the forests and felds wept. as well as men. women and chldren. As the messengers journeyed back to Asgard wth the news that everythng had wept for Balder. they came upon a gantess. called Thok. whose eyes were dry. The messengers ordered her to cry for Balder. but she refused as she sad she dd not love hm. Then. when a terrble laugh broke from her lps. the messengers knew t was really the voce of Loke. Balder never returned to Asgard and the shadows deepened over all thngs. for the nght of death was fast comng on. But the gods had to contnue and put asde ther. grevng as ther regn had not yet ended. When the gods gref had subsded, they decded Balder s death was caused. by Loke's evl and the mstletoe was forgven for ts part n the ncdent. The shrub was placed n the care of Freyja. the goddess of love. Kssng under the mstletoe was a sgn of forgveness and represented the mstletoe's forgveness. Mstletoe. a parastc evergreen, was hghly vsble n the tops of decduous trees n the wnter and because of ts apparently sudden avalablty and ts color. t was used as a Chrstmas decoraton when Chrstmas was ntroduced by the Catholc Church. Chrstmas was also the tme for forgveness. and the orgnal meanng of kssng under the mstletoe ft the tme. Today a man may clam a kss from a woman who walks beneath a sprg of mstletoe for no reason at all except that t has become tradtonal to do so. If you notced earler, Chrstmas was ntroduced by the Catholc Church. Chrst was actually born n the sprng. The celebraton of Chrst's brth n late December was contrved by offcals n the Roman Catholc Church to keep people from swtchng to pagansm. 8 Eght / Techncan Entertanment December 11, I! _ Per crowd falls n love wth Romantcs by Nancy Lach Wrter It was a Saturday nght and The Per was crowded. Crowded may be 'an understatement. for all the tables had long been taken and the asles were jamm ed. The temperature seemed to be more than a hundred degrees and gettng to the bar for a beer was fne art. Everyone had come to see the Romantcs. a Detrot band that was makng ts second appearance at The Per. and the audence was ready to be wooed over. The Romantcs Rchard Cole. Jmmy Marnas. Texas strng tes. and greasy swept-back har. these four cupe boys look more lke long lost relatves of Rcky Nelson than the tough, professonal showmen they proved to be. Havng adjusted to band-member changes. the Romantcs have also altered ther orgnal song style from a very refreshng. raw. danceable early 503 sound. not unlke early Beatles or Presley to a harder. more staunch rock that s backed up by a lot of resoundng bass lnes. A dancng crowd The show contnued wth such songs as Can't Get was pushed on by vocalst/rhythm gutarst Wally Palmer and bass player Rchard Cole. Over You." one of ther slower breather" songs that exhausted after ther set. the Romantcs returned to gave the crowd a chance to rest. The walng vocals do two encores, fnshng out about an hour-and-a-half and melodc bass lnes were superb. Bop be bop Can't stand stll Bop be bop/what a thrll Keep on dancng, you can't stop All you got to do... Bop" The crowd ddn t need any encouragement to dance as Marnos' heady vocals suggested they should. The Romantcs fnshed ther set wth "What I Lke About You." one of ther better known songs that had the crowd ecstatc. Even though they were J. Gels Band s new album performance. The rockng. reelng mob would have lked more. Vocals contan harmony The vocals were traded off between Marnas, Cole, and Palmer. the latter two provdng the lghter sounds to the group. The harmonc parts were excellent as well as flashy., Marnos was spcy on the drums and Cole on bass. Palmer on rhythm gutar. and Canler on lead gutar kept the tenson n the musc. Altogether. the energetc vocals and punchy musc of the Romantcs provded a concert worth rememberng. A specal note should be gven to the Pedestrans who helped warm up the crowd wth some lvely rockablly.. Unfortunately. The Per was SRO sardne room only and vsblty was poor. Most people heard more of the hand than they saw. and other people were resortng to table tops and chars to catch glmpses of the group. I would lked to have been able to see more of the Romantcs snce they are an excellent band. both n sght - I'm sure and sound. The Per should also try to better antcpate the sze of ts crowds so the bar can be better stocked.
