Evlution guide expected by registrtion VP Hrry Crter concerned with students bsing course decisions on guide lone By Kelley McGonnell News Editor The Student Government Assocition plns to publish Student Evlutions Guide tht will include results of student evlutions of professors by registrtion which begins Feb. 8, ccording to Chd Elkins, SGA president. The booklet will contin every course tught t GSU nd listing of ll the professors tht tech tht course. t will lso include the men results of eight stndrdized questions sked on student evlutions. "Students deserve every tool tht they cn hve in selecting courses nd instructors," Clint Murphy, SGA vice president of cdemic ffirs, sid. Fculty nd stff members hve voiced concerns over the distribution of evlution results. "We hve to be cutious," Hrry Crter, vice president of cdemic ffirs, sid. "They [fculty members] tech, do reserch. Their performnce is bsed on lot of things." Crter sid tht fculty members re lso evlu- ted on follow-up courses nd clss visits by other fculty. "My concern [with the guide] is wouldn't wnt people to mke judgment on fculty member bsed on one piece of info," Crter sid. There will be disclimer printed in the guide tht sttes tht teching performnce is just one of the three res the fculty members re evluted on, Elkins sid. The men verge for ech of the eight questions will be bsed on five-point scle with five being the highest nd being the lowest, so the higher the number, the better the techer, Elkins sid. The Georgi Open Records Act of 990 provides tht the results of the evlutions be disclosed if it is requested, Crter sid. "Yes, tht informtion flls under the Georgi Open Records Act nd is vilble to nyone s prt of tht," Crter sid. "We will be providing tht informtion [to SGA] under tht rule." At the lst SGA meeting on Wednesdy, resolution ws pssed for getting cll boxes instlled on cmpus. The resolution pssed with vote of 6 to 2. Those who voted ginst the resolution sid they did not wnt the cll boxes to be funded by the technology fee. SGA officers sid $3,000 in funds hve been llocted for the cll boxes. Elkins noted tht the University Police hs been trying for two yers to get cll boxes on cmpus, nd SGA ws ble to get them pproved within two meetings. SGA is working to get the results of techer evlutions published by Feb. 8. Elkins noted tht the booklet of evlution results will contin only student evlutions of techers, nd is not the sme booklet s the one which will contin biogrphy nd syllbus for ech techer. SGA lso discussed restructuring summer school fees, mking them more equitble without incresing the totl nnul fee. t ws decided tht students would not hve to py n thletic fee during the summer SGA Updte semester, s few students ttend thletic events during this time. Also discussed were fees for residence hlls nd mel plns which will hve to be converted from the qurter to the semester system. Students re currently pying $20 towrd the new recretion building, s prt of their recretion fee. The new recretion building should be open by April. According to SGA President Chd Elkins, the previous dministrtion's system for bookswpping requires too much upkeep. He hs received informtion bout compny who will provide book-swpping service for free. SGA lso voted to send four of their members to the Student Advisory Council, the sme four members who ttended lst time. New SGA sentors were voted on nd pproved. Clhoun Expresswy in August nd exploded into flmes t bout 4.m. Sturdy. According to the report published in the Feb. edition of The August Chronicle, Jmes L. Hill, 24-yer-old former GSU student, long with Jonthon H. Prhm, 24; Brett Roby, 24 nd Jmes G. Townson Jr., 26 ll died instntly when Prhm's 988 Chevrolet Cmro, trvelingwest on the expresswy, jumped the concrete retiner wll in the medin, struck light post on the wll nd then slmmed into gurdril. Richmond County Deputy Virgil D' Antignc sid the cr exploded on finl impct. Coroner Leroy Sims sid the men likely died before the cr burst into flmes. None of the men were wering set belts, but D' Antignc sid tht set belts would not hve mde difference becuse the gs tnk struck the light post, cusing fuel to ignite. Red By Them All Tuesdy, Februry 3,998 SGA: Student Evlution Guides re not needed, focus on the esy things SGA is publishing Student Evlution Guide tht is expected to be vilble in the next few weeks, hopefully before registrtion for spring qurter begins on Feb. 8. The guide will include the men results of student rtings of instructors provided by end-of-the-qurter techer evlutions. But why is this guide, or the subsequent Student Guide to Course Selection, needed? Most students do not tke techer evlutions seriously unless they hve bone to pick with the professor, so evlution results re not necessrily vlid. Also, t the time of the evlution, mny students do not relize tht tough techer who they couldn't stnd ctully tught them lot. This guide will prove to be Consumer's Digest to GSU eduction nd is giving lzy students n esy wy out. The informtion provided is ccessible to students lredy if they would just tke the time to obtin it. This ide is just one of mny different vritions of the theme.
