I hope none of you were effected by the fires in the Santa Cruz Mountains, please keep those that were, in your thoughts. Well, our Black and White Ball on May 3 was a HUGE success, and we received many complimentary comments. The ever popular EVELYN n DENNY were our DJ s, and they really did an outstanding job, together with our very talented decorator Dolores, with help from Jeanette, and several other volunteers who also helped, thank you. Check out the photos on Page 3. Oh, and a special thanks for the delicious finger food you all provided. Cathy will be taking over John Bowen s dance classes beginning in June and she wanted more time to get everything in order. The beauty of the Quickstepper club is the support we give each other on the board. Even though many are stepping down they will be helping in the background. Some of you may not know the story that prompted this theme ; I ll try to make it brief. When John Gallo and John Swanson were ready to retire from the board, they said that they were going to open a restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, The Cabo Wacko (you ve no doubt heard of Cabo Wabo ). I was to be the waitress in a Parrot costume, and my Twin (Sara) was to be cook and bottle washer, however, we decided we wanted to be pole dancers. John n John said it was to be a family restaurant, so they dropped the idea, even though Sara and I had taken pole dancing lessons. I went to Russia where the poles are made of stainless steel (very smooth and hygienic) Sara went to Mexico where the poles are made of wood (lots of splinters), that s why she walks funny these days. believe it or not. Our next dance is What s Your Name on May 31, with the Dancing Shamrocks, MIKE n JOYCE. Mike will teach Michael Barr s dance of the same name, so be at Barrett at 7:30 PM sharp. Two important reminders: 1) The new Board; please complete the ballot on page 5 and place it in the box at the desk, or mail it to CQ s PO Box. 2) Time to renew your membership. If you re not a member, please consider becoming one, we need you, because without members our club wouldn t exist, so help keep Country Quicksteppers alive and well. Inception of the Father's Day took place in Sonora's mind when she happened to hear a Mother's Day sermon in Sonora, who was 27 then, had begun to recognize the hardships her father must have gone through while bringing up his six children alone. When Sonora was 16, her mother had died during childbirth. Sonora's father a Civil War veteran by the name of William Jackson Smart raised six children including the newborn on his own. Sonora questioned that if there is a day to recognize mothers then why is not there a day to honor fathers? The noble idea of celebrating Father's Day became quite popular in the US so much so that President Woodrow Wilson approved of the festival in President Calvin Coolidge too supported the idea but it was President Lyndon Johnson who signed a Presidential Proclamation declaring the third Sunday of June as Father's Day in Then in 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father's Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. This year Father s Day is June 15 th!
