Box 4966 Foster City, CA A note from Anni: Anni Wunderlich, President G day Mates: Well, I was back from the land down under for our first dance in April, which was Looney Tunes with DJ s DIANA and TINA. We had a terrific turn-out and D n T kept the floor filled with a great mix of dances. quicksteppers@yahoo.com Website: countryquicksteppers.com Our next dance is our BLACK AND WHITE BALL on May 2.. and can you guess what the theme is? Yes, black and white, so wear your finest and bring some fancy finger food to share. And as usual our special DJ s for this dance are EVELYN n DENNY. This is one of my favorite dances and I won t be here, as Richard and I leave for China on April 21. BUT, I will be back for Pretty in Pink on May 16 (this is John Swanson s favorite dance, because just like Vickie, it s his favorite color. wink, wink), with DJ s MIKE n JOYCE (shhhh, Mike absolutely loves pink). April 18 was Blue Moon with the Dancing Shamrocks, MIKE n JOYCE, not only did M n J keep the place jumping, they also brought along a group of their students, bringing our attendance to 67 plus. Our new web-matrix Shirley Sellers was also in attendance, and it was a pleasure to be able to welcome her to one of our dances. Several thank you s for the March 21 dance, It s Not Easy Being Green ; to Renee and Ted, the only board members in attendance, Vickie and Tod for their help (I believe Tod made the announcements and behaved himself), Dolores for her outstanding decorations, and DJ CLINT Qualls. It s that time of year when I usually start pushing for Board nominations, actually I normally start earlier than this. However, this year, although we are losing Jan Hanway, Secretary, and Renee & Ted, Membership, I was very fortunate that the people I approached for these positions, accepted. Marlene Knecht said yes as Secretary, and Victoria Garcia & George Nickum, Membership. You ll be seeing the same old smiling faces with regard to the rest of the Board. My twin cousin, John Swanson, received many flattering comments about his April Shooter letter, wherein he wrote about the history of the Club; hopefully he will be able to write more about it in the future. 4 THE STRAIGHT SHOOTER MAY 2009 PAGE 4 April 4th was our Looney Tunes dance MEET LORRAINE KURTELA Lorraine was born & raised in San Francisco. She has lived for over 50 years now in San Carlos, where she and her husband Mitch raised their two children, Mitch and Michele. Lorraine also has a 27 year old granddaughter, Michele s daughter Dorothy. For many years she worked, sometime part-time and sometimes full-time, first for a department store and then for a heating company. As if working and raising her children wasn t enough to keep her busy, Lorraine & her husband also coached a women s softball team for many years. When her husband Mitch passed away about 13 years ago, and with both children grown and out on their own, Lorraine was looking for something to fill her time. Her daughter, Michele, was already heavily involved in line dancing, as a dancer, an instructor, and a well-known choreographer. Michele tried to teach Lorraine how to line dance at longdistance by making teaching videos for her, but it was not a great success. Finally, Lorraine found a class to take locally, taught by Pat Knowlan. She gives Pat the credit for helping her to really start to understand line dancing. Soon she was hooked, like so many of us. Lorraine has taken classes with several local instructors over the years, and currently attends two classes a week, with Michael Barr and with Cathy Dacumos. She has also tried her hand at choreography, including a fun dance she wrote with her then teenaged granddaughter, and the recent local favorite Yes, Sir That s My Baby. Lorraine also performs with a group called the Seven Expressions, who put on an act each year at Michael & Michele s dance event in Corning Boogie til the Cows Come Home. Lorraine is a great example to all of us that dancing really will keep us young! Fill out -cut out -bring to next dance or mail it to the Club P. O. Box below.
