2 MATCH REPORTS July 2010 Mayne Under 8 Black Coach: Mark Gordon : Greg Applin No report submitted - Mayne Under 8 White Coach: Andrew Dexter : Tracy Davies No report submitted - Mayne Under 8 Gold Coach: Adrian Gower Andrew Smart : Stephen Parker On Saturday Mayne U8 Gold took on Kedron at Kedron and what a game it turned out to be. Alex, Jacob and Dominic set the scene in the first quarter up forward with each of the boys working extremely well together. work was the order of the day with each of the boys scoring a goal and a particular well done goes to Dominic who broke from the pack and scored a terrific goal. Then there was our agile midfield composed of Liam, Max and Harry tormenting the opposition with their speed and ever improving skills. Max had a day out moving into the thick of the packs and getting away some great kicks; Harry has no fear and took on his much bigger opponents at every opportunity. Liam took some good marks and is developing some great ruck work getting some well placed taps to his team mates. Barret and the two Lachlan s kept their opponents busy in the back line keeping them closely tagged at all times. Barret got away some great kicks and picked out his team mates with precision passing. It was pleasing to see the boys looking up and picking out their unmanned teammates before passing the ball which resulted in some great ball movement up the field. Well done team only three week to go let s make the most of it! Mayne Under 9 Black Coach: Dave Hood : Neil Faulkner With the Tigers playing host to the Under 9 Kedron Red team we had a game on our hands right from the get go. Without Big Nick helping out, our boys had to dig deep to get the job done and that is exactly what they did. A big Thank You to the 2 boys from the Under 8's Paddy Aplin and Nick Glass who took out my coach's award, played on after a nasty hit in the tummy just before 3/4 time - well done. Gus, Adi and Elijah POW had their hands full trying hard to contain the fast Kedron boys but did a great job in all positions. Ethan, Paddy and Willow POW have got there combinations done to a fine art and are in tune with each other more than Vossy's boys currently. Patrick Glass played perhaps one of his best games all year and was on to every opportunity that came his way, he has the speed and skill to leave the opposition wondering what happened where ever he plays. Well Done Again lads - good to see the team song belted out after the game Loud and Proud. MATCH REPORTS Match Reports limited to 100 words - to jrbyrne@optusnet.com.au by Tuesday evening following the game. Page 2
3 MATCH REPORTS July 2010 Mayne Under 9 Gold Coach: Troy Davis Matthew O Brien : Joseph Hughes Q1 - Tigers came out of the starting blocks pretty revved up and in the first passage of play nearly every Tiger touched the ball before it was finished off with a nice goal from the Captain to open the scores. For the remainder of the quarter though, it was pretty even between both teams with the ball going up and down the field for long periods of play. Both teams showed great skills in defence. Even though both teams had around the same number of attempts at goal, by the time the siren sounded, Kedron had some better accuracy. Bring on the second quarter. Q2 - Some great team work displayed this quarter, with all the players getting many touches of the pig skin. Contest was heating up a little though, with both teams relentless in scrambling for the ball, at any expense. This seemed to be frustrating a few of the Tigers and if it was a soccer game; Coach Troy would have yellow carded a few of his own players! The quarter ended on a better note when Oscar kicked an almost impossible goal from the sideline chalk right on the siren. Q3 - Needless to say, at half time Coach Troy calmly, but firmly reminded his players of the spirit of the game, and the sportsmanship responsibilities of wearing a Tigers jersey. Troy s gee up did the trick and where you could hardly split the teams in the first half, the third quarter proved to be all Tigers. Kedron are kept scoreless whilst Tigers kick a bucketful. Paulino comes out of the shadows and scores two goals in rapid succession. Loche stands strong in defence and is virtually impenetrable. His determination and commitment spurred on the whole team on and before you knew it the game rose to a new level. Q4 - A much happier Coach sent his troops out for the last quarter and they quickly picked up where they left off, with some outstanding running and keenness to keep the game moving. In one passage of play Loche, Fraser, Adam, Connor, Paulino, Oliver, and Ted got the ball swiftly from one end of the ground to the other, before Ted hand balled to Rory who ended it perfectly with a goal straight between the uprights. The difference between the two teams in the last half was that the Tigers simply wanted the ball more. It was a great game with many lessons learnt. Captain: Oliver; 1 st Best Work award: Loche; 2 nd Best team Work award: Ted; Player of the match: Oli; McDonalds award: Rory Mayne Under 10 Coach: Anthony Quin Jim Byrne (Rhamie) : Ian Grice The Under 10s took the long trip out to Ferny Grove to play the Falcons who proved to be a tough opposition with great skills. Mayne was well and truly up to the challenge though. The first quarter was a tight race with no team gaining the ascendancy. The Tigers only managed one goal in the first quarter with the wind. A highlight was James Tyquin's specky at center half back which is a contender for mark of the year. Josh was like the rock of Gibraltar in defence as usual and managed to keep the Falcons from scoring time and again. The Tigers saved their best footy for the third quarter where the game was played almost entirely in the forward half with the Tigers scoring 5 goals. Zach snagged a Stephen Milne special from the pocket while Hamish, not to be outdone, scored his second goal with a banana kick after sharking the ball from the pack as part of a best on ground performance. Finn lifted the team with one of his best games of the season with great running out of the center, knock outs from the ruck and hand balls on the run to team mates. The whole team played great footy and ran the ball up and down the field, and was particularly impressive when kicking into the wind. Digby in his first season continues to impress with four or five marks and excellent running all over the field. There were many other examples of great endeavour all day including from Joshua, Declan, Jesse, Nick and Jamie who went in hard and were aggressive for the ball, holding the Falcons at bay at crucial times. Great job Mayne and let's keep up the fantastic team work!!! Mayne Under 11 Coach: Lee Holleran : Traci Fletcher Rhys Holleran We travelled to another Tiger Den on Saturday to play the Redcliffe footy club. Redcliffe has been going ok this year, only losing 3 games - now it is 4. The Mayne Tigers opened in great fashion kicking with the wind and playing some very good footy, but being wasteful in front of goal kicking 4 points, before Harry kicked our first major. At the first break we had 4 goals 6 on the board to zero, but in the 2nd term Redcliffe got back into the game booting 2 goals to our zero. It could have been worse except for the efforts of Jack young at fullback who had an outstanding game the week, after he had been stretchered off in the 12 s the previous week. Adam, Millar, Will, Jack P, Kyle and Billy were almost as good. Another stirring performance by the backline - they just keep playing good footy. Third term Redcliffe started well, controlling the ball for the first 5 minutes, but the backs held them out. We swapped Paddy and Nick in the forwards and suddenly it started raining goals. Our center line of Alex (who played his best game in ages), Ryan (who just continues to astound) and the ever reliable Sammy, got right on top. Harry, Bossie and my coaches award man, Logan winning around the ground gave Nick and his merry men plenty of chances and they made the most of it. Matty had another good game and Paddy just got better as the game wore on. Lachlan had his 4th good game on the trot. Well done to Pat, who has a real crack at the ball, and Nick who just keeps finding the goals. Jacob and Sebby both played well, particularly Sebby who played the best game I have seen from him - Well done mate! We kicked 5 goals for the term. The last term was an arm wrestle, even though I thought we had the better of play, Redcliffe kicked the only goal of the term. From my point of view it was a pretty good team effort, especially the Third term where we probably played our best footy of the year. Well done guys!! Goalkickers Nick 5, Harry, Paddy, Lachlan and Sammy all kicked 1 each. Parents - many thanks to all the parents who supported the trivia night, it was a great night. Cheers Lee Page 3
4 MATCH REPORTS July 2010 Mayne Under 12 Coach: Michael Delargen Ray McCracken : Lindy D Arcy Settle Family Mayne def Kenmore Under cloudy skies down at the Den another danger game loomed for the U12s, as we were again missing key U12 players in Sashin and Trent, and illness had struck down another 5 throughout the week. Our Kenmore opposition were sitting 4th on the ladder, arrived early and in good numbers. But the mighty Mayne cream rose to the top... again. They were led by a herculean effort from BTW big Hamish C who marked all day and set up many goals with excellent tap ruckwork, a POM performance from "Hammer" (Hamish B) who played beautifully in the centres - tackling and then clearing the ball to set up many forays forward, and another BTW excellent head-over-the-ball gutsy effort from Lachlan S in the middle. The golden arches encouragement awards went to U11 Adam who had the crowd cheering as he brought down an opponent 3 times his size in a textbook tackle, Chloe who had another great game running and tackling hard, and Lewis who ran himself ragged in the middle despite being sick all week. Lachie D started to find some form after illness too, Bhosten put in some excellent on-ball clearance work and the ultimate bravery accolades went to feisty U11 Nick who held his line to take a tough mark, and got himself knocked out in the process! A special mention to all the parents who helped out for this home game and shared around the jobs with minimal fuss but maximum efficiency - many thanks folks. Next week we travel to Logan to exact revenge upon the Cobras - the only team to have defeated the mighty Mayne U12s this year. Watch this space! Mayne Under 14 Coach: Gary Kirby Andrew Howarth John Griffiths : Dave Henry Mayne def Logan Cobras Viper Pit Zumba The mighty Tigers stared down a challenge from a feisty Cobra outfit to triumph in a convincing win at the Viper Pit much to the delight of our merry band of punters who could sniff a win. There were plenty of heroics on Sunday from our boys who stuck to their guns and finished strongly over a tough opponent that refused to throw in the towel. Skeeta K (BOG) has been firing all year and sent out an invitation to all ruckman in the comp and Danny Green that he wants to get it on after a totally dominant performance over the Cobras. You re a legend Skeeta and whatever you do leave your lucky undies on for the last few games. Snyder Munro (BTW) made a triumphant return to U-14s after a spell in the VFL. It obviously did him no harm as he continually carved up the Logan defense with his dazzling side step, rapid-fire handballs and radar like kicking. The ball magnet is back folks and we re all waiting to see how he handles finals footy. Skull Davis (BTW) had another excellent game and played his heart out in defence saving our bacon on a number of occasions. Skull is getting quite a following and is attracting the attention of AFL talent scouts and the media. When asked about his intentions next year he dismissed rumours that he is considering offers from rival clubs. The human wrecking ball Slammin Sammy Nock (BTW) had to settle for a Golden Arches Award this week and was probably unlucky not to take out BOG with a scintillating defensive performance that had plenty of Cobras looking over their shoulder every time they touched the footy. Well folks we re off to the seaside this week so bring your block out and your budgie smugglers ready for some fun in the sun and go you mighty Tigers! Mayne /Kedron Under 16 Coach: Brett Saunders (Kedron) David Follett (Mayne) : Len O Mara Mayne/Kedron def Mt Gravatt/Logan Cobras This was the last home game for the year at Mayne so the boys were up for a good showing. Again the opposition came out wanting a win against the top team and the boys had to work hard. There was a great crowd with the U18 s turning up on their bye weekend and coach Paul Smith helping out as runner. The new signings Matt, Christian and Kenape were surprised how much different the game was on the smaller oval and everyone took time to change their normal big field game plan. Kenape got two goals at full forward with the full back struggling to get near the ball and Matt put through one from 40m. Terry, Jake, Christan and Jaye got good ball from Connor at ruck and Darcy got a couple of goals and set up a number of others. Christian had a great game at fullback and Campbell, Ben and Sam combined well on the half back line. Rowan and Budgie had good games and Joshua Bartsch was still a bit sore but started to show glimpses of form. A lot of good scoring opportunities were missed and the kicking was atrocious but the score-line did reflect the determination shown by MtGravatt/Logan. Page 4
