2 DTT MIGRATION READINESS REPORT: Intrductin Digital Terrestrial Televisin (DTT) is a prject wherein Sentech is respnsible fr prviding the netwrk infrastructure t enable bradcasters t migrate frm analgue t digital televisin. The DTT prcess cmmenced in 2006 and DVB-T was adpted as the cuntry s standard fr digital migratin. Sentech then switched n the digital signal in Octber 2008 and has been perating a trial fr SABC 1, 2, 3 and e.tv. In January 2011, the Minister f Cmmunicatins annunced that the DTT standard wuld be upgraded t DVBT-2. In additin, the analgue switch-ff date was cnfirmed as 31 December At the end f March 2011, Sentech had achieved expanded cverage and was ready t radiate digital signals t abut 60% f the Suth African ppulatin based n the DVB-T standard. These sites will be upgraded t DVB-T2 and we prject that all f them will have cnverted by 31 March 2012 t prvide a fully peratinal DTT netwrk in supprt f the fficial launch in the cuntry. We prjected that by March 2012, we will have reached 74% ppulatin cverage, and whilst we will certainly reach mre than 60% cverage, we acknwledge that we may nt reach the full 74%. The estimated perid t cver the remaining 14 % has been affected by the need t capacitate ur Supply Chain Functin at all levels f Gvernance. SENTECH LIMITED DTT Migratin Readiness Reprt_19 September
3 DTT MIGRATION READINESS REPORT: Intrductin During the perid under review the Gauteng analgue frequency migratin fr CSN at Pretria Nrth was cmpleted and the M-Net migratin at Cashan cntinued. The M-Net transmitter at Brixtn twer was upgraded and a Single Frequency Netwrk (SFN) trial is being cnducted. Sentech is currently fcusing n cnverting cmpleted sites t DVB-T2 technlgy and cntinue with the prject rllut. Belw are current prject macr activities t be executed within this financial year: Trial DVB-T2 technlgy with clients. Prcure equipment, execute and cmplete Phase 5 f the netwrk rll ut. Prcure equipment and execute Phase 6 f the netwrk rll ut. Finalise DTT Tariff Mdel. Establish cntent links between clients and Sentech head-end systems.
