2 from the Principal This is the last newsletter for what has been a particularly frantic and busy term! During Winter Tournament week I was delighted to travel to Dunedin to watch the Basketball A Team and 1 st XI Hockey teams play in their respective competitions. Congratulations to the hockey girls for qualifying for the top flight Secondary Schools Tournament in 2018 the Federation/Marie Fry Cup. The top two teams of the tournament automatically move up a grade. We are proud of the achievements of this team to gain this promotion which was a result of a huge amount of work and commitment throughout the season. The basketball and netball girls (who played in Christchurch) had a great week. Thank you to the team of teachers, coaches, managers and parent supporters who assisted during this week. I really appreciated the personal time you took to do this. At the end of term Distinction Assembly we will particularly be profiling the Arts. We will have International Country and Music recording star Kaylee Bell speaking to the girls. In the last week we will have our annual House Choir evening. If you get a chance to get to this evening, you will see a huge amount of musical and artistic talent on display here at Timaru Girls. Please get to this evening if you can. 4 Tournament Week SPORTS NEWS TGHS 1st XI Hockey: TGHS 1 st XI Hockey headed to Dunedin to compete in the Audrey Timlin Secondary Schools Girls Tournament full of confidence after coming off one of their most successful seasons in the local Mid and South Canterbury Senior Women's competition where they finished as champions of the competition. TGHS qualified top of their pool after wins against Gore High School, Craighead Diocesan School and Fielding High School. In quarter finals TGHS come up against Wellington East Girls School and found themselves 1-3 down at half-time before producing one of the best come-backs of the tournament slotting 5 unanswered goals past the Wellington East team to win the game 6-3. The girls marched on into the semi-final where they came up against the local girls from St Hilda's Collegiate School. The home town girls came out firing and it took until the 57 th minute before TGHS found the solitary goal which proved to be the winner earning them a place in the final against the strong St Andrews College team. Our girls gave it everything in the final but were to finish second to the St Andrews College team earning themselves a silver medal. Huge thanks to Tim Greenall (Coach), Penni Naylor (Manager), Tori Simpson (Chief Cook) and the many parents who not only came to Dunedin for the week to support the girls but have been on the sidelines every Saturday cheering on our girls. Basketball Senior: The TGHS Senior Basketball team finished the season in Timaru as Champions of the Secondary Schools and Senior Women's League before heading off to compete in the AA Secondary Schools Basketball competition in Dunedin. In pool play the girls went down to eventual winners Middleton Grange School and Otago Girls High School before securing a great win against Burnside High School. This saw the girls competing in the 8-16 placings where they beat James Hargest and Columba College to finish a very credible 9 th place. Many thanks to Sean Fuller (Coach), Annabelle Quinonez (Manager), Lyn Braid and the parents for their support throughout the season. Basketball Junior: The TGHS Junior Basketball team and their coaches, Year 12 students Laura and Olivia Seyb, headed to Ashburton to take on the best junior basketball teams in the South Island. The girls went through their pool in 2 nd place after recording one loss and two wins against Cashmere High School and Papanui High School earning them a place in the top 8 in the South Island. The girls eventually went on to play Ashburton College for 3 rd and 4 th place losing to be placed 4 th out of 16 teams. This is the first time that TGHS junior teams have competed for a number of years in this tournament and to come 4 th place is a huge credit to them and their coaches Laura and Olivia Seyb. The future of Basketball at TGHS is looking bright! Huge thanks to Lyn Braid for managing the team and to the parents who offered transport and support to the girls at their tournament. Rugby: South Canterbury Rugby entered a combined schools under 15 girls team in Christchurch tournament with 15 girls from TGHS making up the team. The girls had a fantastic few days competing against other under 15 girls teams from the South Island and are all the better for the experience. Following the tournament the girls were lucky enough to meet a couple of players from the Black Ferns Women's Rugby team who recently won the World Cup and had to chance to hold the cup and have their pictures with it. Thanks to Mick Geary and John Gregan for coaching the girls and to Caro Rhodes from South Canterbury Rugby Union. Hanan Shield Rugby: Congratulations to Jorja Miller, Jenna-Rae McIntyre and Ash Mortimer who have been selected for the Hanan Shield School Girls rugby team who will compete in the first week of the school holidays in Christchurch. 6 Rifle Shooting: This year the development squad came 20th and 26th in a field of 40 teams for the Target Shooting New Zealand Secondary Schools competition. The teams were Kate Patterson, Tala Kyles and Hope WIlson, and Nicole Curtis, Paige Russell and Laetitia Manson respectively. Well done. Netball: During Winter Tournament Week our A Netball team travelled to Christchurch to compete in the South Island Secondary Schools Championships. All of the girls had trained hard in preparation for the tournament and had just won the Premier Plate Grade in the NSC competition, beating Craighead by one goal. The girls were a bit nervous on the first day and started with a close loss to Kaikorai Valley College. They then found their feet and beat both Collingwood Area School and Burnside High School to go through as second in their pool. Tuesday started off with a very close loss by 3 points to Blue Mountain College, who went on to win the B Grade, which shows just how close the competition was. Unfortunately, two more close losses to Cromwell College and Riccarton High School meant that TGHS was now playing off for places This was not what we wanted but the girls played well and the biggest loss was by only 5 goals. A win against Kaikoura High School on Thursday boosted the girls spirits and they were ready for Ellesmere College in the afternoon. It was a close game but our TGHS girls showed great composure in a pressure situation and finished the tournament with a win to claim 13 th place in B Grade. Coming top 16 in such a tight competition is a great achievement for the girls and they should all be proud of their efforts. Coach: Erin Bates. Manager: Julie Pateman TGHS Netball Season 2017: Another netball season is now done and dusted. This was a great season for TGHS and we had 15 teams competing in both the Wednesday and Saturday NSC competition. Our teams were well-supported and it was great to see so many students up at the netball courts. Our new netball dresses, that were sponsored by Fonterra, looked great and coaches were better equipped this year. We won a lot of awards at NSC prize-giving this year, which was pleasing to see. Four of our teams won their respective grades, which is an excellent effort! We won the following awards: - Lucy Andrews Rose Bowl awarded to the team with the least goals scored against them all season 10 Yellow team - Life Members Trophy awarded to the team who scored the most goals on Closing Day 10 Green team

7 - Ruth Welsh Cup awarded to the winner of the Secondary Schools B Grade Section 2 Development team - Netball South Canterbury Cup awarded to the winner of the Secondary Schools A Grade Section 1 9A team - Netball South Canterbury Schools League Cup awarded to the winner of the Secondary Schools Premier Grade 10A team (who also received a medal each) - Joan Barwood Memorial Trophy awarded to the Most Valuable Player in the South Canterbury U15 rep team Jess Milne - Sherson Family Cup awarded to the winner of the Premier Plate Grade A team We held our first annual TGHS netball prizegiving last Wednesday in the school hall, which was a great success. We wanted to acknowledge all of our teams that had played this year and also our umpires, coaches and managers. We think it is important that everyone is recognized for the time and effort they have put in over the season. Each team received 3 awards Most Improved Player, Most Valuable Player and Most Contribution to the Team and the coaches of each team selected the recipients. We also had some cups donated to us this year, which was very generous and were given out for the first time. Recipients of Special Awards and Cups: - TGHS Shield for the Team with the Best Points Differential over the whole season Development Team - Fletcher Cup for High Achievement and Dedication to Umpiring Isobel McKnight - McKnight Cup for the Most Valuable Defensive Player in the A team Abbey Clark - Wilson Cup for the Most Valuable Player in the A team Cheynese King - TGHS Trophy for Dedication and Commitment to the Club Holly Mallinson We finished off our prize-giving with a light supper and it was a fun way to finish the season. Thank you to the ladies who helped out in the kitchen and cooked the food for us! I also want to say a big thank you to all of the students for giving netball a go this year and sticking it out; the umpires, who both play and umpire games; the managers, for their endless support; and the coaches, who give up their time in order for the girls to play the sport they love. Thank you also to Vicki McKnight, our Chairperson of the Committee who has given up so much of her time during this season and our TGHS Netball Committee for all of their help.
