Grant Walker Educational Center, Pollock, LA Jr. Leadership Conference: March 7-9 Challenge Camp: March ANNUAL PENNY DRIVE The deadline for all pennies to be turned in to the 4-H office is Friday, April 11, 4:00pm. If you would like to have your pennies ready by the date we meet with your club, for your April meeting, we can pick them up at that meeting. The top donating club will be recognized at 4-H Awards Night. Thank you for your support! SIGN UP DATES: March 3-March 21 CAMP DATES: June If you are in the 4 th -6 th grades and between the ages of 9-12, then you qualify to attend the 4-H Summer Camp! Registrations will be taken until March 21. Spaces are limited so sign-up is on a first-come basis. Applications may be turned in to our office with at least ½ the fee, and you will receive a packet of paperwork to complete. These papers and any remaining balance must be turned in by April 4. Total cost is $185 and includes transportation, lodging, meals, camp/parish T-shirts and photo. Please call our office ( ) if you have questions about 4-H Summer Camp! Portfolios, Project Books, and Outstanding Officer and Leader Award Sheets April 11 is the deadline to turn in all of these items. Your Portfolio should reflect all your involvement in 4-H, school, and community activities. The project book should be completed as specified for each book and turned in with your Portfolio. Officers and Leaders: the Outstanding Award sheet is to be completed by you and please follow the directions on the form. All these items will be judged and awards will be presented at Awards Night, May 6. Have questions? Call the 4-H office at
2 Recruiting 4-H University Participants Are you interested in competing in fashion revue, automotive driving, bicycle, public speaking, computer simulation, presenting a demonstration, consumer judging, etc.? Did you turn 13 before January 1, 2014? Would you like to spend four days on the LSU campus in Baton Rouge during the week of June 17-20? Maybe you re not interested in competing, but you want to travel with us and attend a session in Clover College. All of these opportunities will be discussed at a 4-H meeting to be held April 10, at BPCC, Bldg. F, Student Services Bldg. Room 203, from 6:15 to 7:15pm. Call our office at to sign up. See you soon! Wednesday, May 28, 2014 The 13 th Annual 4-H Day at the Capitol provides an opportunity for 4-H members to learn about the legislative process beginning with an assembly at 10am. Following the assembly, legislators will host 4-H members in their offices and provide educational tours of the Capitol. During the afternoon sessions, the state 4-H President addresses both the House and Senate with a presentation on the Louisiana 4-H program. 4-H exhibits and displays are set up in the rotunda adding to 4-H Day at the Capitol program. 3 CONGRATULATIONS! Honey Bee Essay Winners and Prudential Spirit of Community Award The 4-H world is buzzing about some of our Bossier 4-H ers! We are so proud of Sarah Hammonds (CNP) for winning 3 rd place and Lexa Thompson (Princeton Elementary) for winning 10 th place in the State 4-H Honey Bee Essay Contest. They competed against 20 other entries from across the state of Louisiana. Sarah will receive a cash award and plaque during the Louisiana Beekeeping Conference (generally held in December). Also, Madison Waldron (Haughton MS) won the Prudential Spirit of Community Award for her pet projects, and she contributes her success to the record keeping skills that she has learned through 4-H. Madison s mom said, Thanks to 4-H, we document EVERYTHING! Madison won $1,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. in May. GREAT JOB Bossier 4-H ers!!!! 4-H Marsh Maneuvers July 14-18, 2014 Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge Grand Chenier, La. 4-H ers in grades H FUN FEST This camp is only offered to a parish every 4 years, and this is Bossier s year to attend Marsh Maneuvers. Are you ready to go cast netting, fishing, crabbing, water chemistry testing, seining, seafood processing, boating and much more? And, at no cost to you!! The first four 9 th to 12 th graders who turn in their completed registration forms will be allowed to attend, and additional registrants will be placed on a waiting list. Those attending will be responsible for their own transportation to and from the Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge in south Louisiana. Registration forms may be picked up at the 4-H office located on the Fourth Floor of the Courthouse Building in Benton and returned by Thursday, May 1, to the 4-H office. Remember, it s first-come, first-serve!! ATTENTION: 7 TH 12 TH GRADE 4-H MEMBERS!! Come out and have a blast with other 4-H ers from the Northwest Region on Saturday, April 5, at the Red River National Wildlife Refuge, 150 Eagle Bend Point (off the Teague Parkway in south Bossier) from 10:00am until 3:00pm. There will be lots of games and activities as well as a great way to find out what 4-H has to offer. Call the 4-H office at by March 21 to pre-register. The cost of $10, includes lunch and a T-shirt, and payment is due in the 4-H office by Friday, March 21. The 4-H Cloverbuds (5-8 years old) will meet on Tuesday, March 11, 6:00-6:45pm at Johnny s Pizza, 2016 Airline Dr. (across from Books-A-Million). Since we had to cancel our meeting due to the weather, please bring your February community service items of deodorant and blankets. Stuffed animals (new or slightly used) will be collected for the March community service drive. Do you want to do more in your community and socialize with other teens in your area? If you answered yes to these questions, then we have the perfect club for you! The Twin Cities Leadership Club is a collaboration between Bossier and Caddo 4-H ers. In February and March they will be doing community outreach projects. In April they will be having social events. There are NO dues to join and be involved. If you are interested in becoming a member, simply call our office and leave your name and with us, and we will add you to the group to receive all the information on the upcoming events and activities. For the March meeting, the group will meet to participate in a community service project.
4 CNP CLUB Record keeping is an important part of every 4- H educational project. The Portfolio books that are completed and turned in to our office (April 11) will be judged. Recognition/awards will be given for these books at Awards Night. Keep this book from year to year and add to it. You may include up to three years of 4-H work per book. Many awards, college scholarships, and educational trips are given to club members on the basis of their records and project work. You may download this book at: Clicking on the Portfolio title will take you to the document page. Click on Whole Document ; this will allow you to type in any information or you can just print the document then fill in the blanks. New Tech at Plain Dealing MARCH - The CNP meeting is set for March 6, 6:00pm, at the Shady Grove Recreation Center, 3945 Wayne Ave. in south Bossier. All CSI articles (stuffed animals for the clover kits) for the month of March must be turned in at this time. The CNP member that turns in the most items will not only be awarded Clover Bucks but will also win a special prize. REMEMBER to bring in all of your bagged pennies (each 50 cent baggie will earn you 100 clover bucks). APRIL - The CNP group will meet at 6:00pm on April 3 at the Boardwalk (past Copeland s Cheesecake Bistro where the picnic tables are). If we have inclement weather, the meeting will be rescheduled to the following Thursday, April 10, at 6:00pm. This is your last chance to turn in your PENNIES! Your community service project for this month is packages of new socks for adults and children. Helping our Community! Our school clubs did a great job collecting donations of Blankets and Deodorant for the Fire Stations last month. NEW 4-H FUNDRAISER 4-H will be trying a NEW fundraiser this year (we will not be selling strawberries this year due to past delivery date issues). We will be selling raffle tickets for $1.00, and we will be raffling off TWO $200 VISA gift cards!!! The drawing will be held on Monday, March 17, 4:00pm (YES, St. Patrick s Day our clover connection!), and we will call the winners as soon as the drawing is complete. Our school club leaders will be given the chance to sell these tickets (the TWO Top Selling Club Leaders will EACH win a $100 gift card!!!!!), as well as our Teen Leadership Club members (they will earn funds for their 4-H accounts), so you can check with them on purchasing your tickets OR you can visit the 4-H office (4 th Floor, Benton Courthouse).
