2 THE SPORT OF TABLE TENNIS Started as an upper class parlr game in 19 th century England Develped int a cmpetitive sprt in the early 20 th century; the first Wrld Champinships f the Internatinal Table Tennis Federatin (ITTF) was held in 1926 An Olympic sprt since 1988 The secnd mst played sprt in the wrld after sccer Prfessinal table tennis leagues exist in many cuntries; the mst prminent are in China, Germany, Japan, Russia The tp table tennis players in the wrld earn ~$1 millin including endrsements The table is 9 feet lng, 5 feet wide, 2.5 feet high; the net is 6 inches high; the curt space is 1000 square feet minimum The ball is 40mm in diameter and 2.7 grams in weight, traveling nearly 100mph and spinning at nearly 10,000rpm Matches cnsist f the best 4 ut f 7 games (singles semifinals and finals) r best 3 ut f 5 games (dubles events, early runds f singles events, r team events). Games are first t 11 pints, alternating serve every tw pints. NCTTA COLLEGE TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE The Natinal Cllegiate Table Tennis Assciatin (NCTTA) is the gverning bdy fr cllege table tennis in the US and Canada A nn-prfit rganizatin, run purely by vlunteers The Champinships is the culminatin f the NCTTA League Over 200 participating clleges, cmpeting in 6 regins, subdivided int 29 divisins, played in fall and spring academic semesters r quarters.
