1 2017 US Open Umpires Selectin Guidelines US Open Officials Selectin Cmmittee: The US Open Officials Selectin Cmmittee ( Cmmittee ) is respnsible fr the selectin f all Line Umpire applicants fr the US Open. The Cmmittee shall advise the USTA n pre-turnament assignments f Line Umpires. Review Officials and Assistant Referees are nt selected by the US Open Officials Selectin Cmmittee. The general selectin prcess fr the US Open: 1. A list f all Umpires wh timely applied t the US Open is sent t the Selectin Cmmittee with the fllwing additinal infrmatin included: USTA certificatin USTA evaluatins ITF badge level ATP rating average fr the previus tw years ATP rating average fr the current year which als shws number f evaluatins The US Open Chief Umpire rating that was used fr assigning Umpires at the previus year s US Open. This rating determines an Umpire s assignment each day based n evaluatins frm the USTA evaluatrs, feedback frm the Chair Umpires and previus wrk recrd. Previus US Open evaluatins Prir t the Cmmittee meeting, feedback n Line Umpires frm the United States may be cllected frm: Sectin Chairpersns US Open Chief Umpire Staff Prir t the Cmmittee meeting, feedback n Internatinal Line Umpires is cllected frm: ITF Officiating Department Grand Slam Chief Umpires Lists frm Internatinal Federatins rating their Officials wh applied Page 1 f 5

2 2. All feedback is sent t the Cmmittee fr their review. 3. A chart is created that prvides the anticipated number f Officials required fr each day f the US Open Qualifying Event and Main Draw. This is based n the fllwing infrmatin: The Match Schedule Plan (MSP) issued by the Referee Staff f the US Open The prjected number f curts used each day The crew cnfiguratin needed fr the type f matches being played Number f spares needed Number f Chair Umpires required fr all matches 4. The Cmmittee meets in April/May t make selectins fr Line Umpires. Applicants wh applied after the applicatin deadline are added t the list f Officials nt selected t create an alternates list shuld psitins becme available at a later date. The selectin prcess fr Chair Umpire psitins at the US Open: Chair Umpires at the US Open (ther than the US Open Junir Champinships, US Open Champins Invitatinal and US Open Wheelchair Cmpetitin), require an ITF White Badge Chair Umpire Certificatin r higher. All United States and Internatinal Chair Umpire selectins fr the US Open are determined by: Feedback prvided t the Referee and Chief Umpire by Grand Slam Supervisrs and ATP/WTA representatives Tentative selectins are made by the US Open Chief Umpire and US Open Referee with final apprval by the US Open Referee as per the Grand Slam Rulebk The selectin prcess fr Line Umpire psitins at the US Open: Nte: USTA certificatin levels, frm high t lw, are Prfessinal Line, Natinal Line, USTA Line, Sectinal Umpire, and Prvisinal Umpire. 1. Officials frm the United States wh are certified as Prfessinal Line and Natinal Line are generally apprved fr selectin unless ne r mre f the fllwing reasns apply (listed in n particular rder): Lack f wrking assignments in the current year Late applicatin Officials Cde f Cnduct vilatin(s) Pr perfrmance based upn evaluatins at ther prfessinal events Previus less-than-satisfactry US Open evaluatins 2. All Officials frm the United States that are certified as USTA Line, Sectinal Umpire, r Prvisinal Umpire are reviewed based upn: Strng wrk recrd Satisfactry evaluatins Infrmatin reviewed including: Availability Wrk recrd Page 2 f 5

3 USTA and ATP evaluatins and ratings Timely applicatin Feedback frm: US Open Chief Umpire Staff Sectinal Chairpersns USTA Pr Circuit Persnnel 3. The Cmmittee seeks an verall cnsensus in rder t select an Official. N ne member f the Cmmittee can select r reject an Official. 4. All Internatinal Line Umpire applicants are reviewed by the Cmmittee based upn: Grand Slam wrk recrd within the last tw Grand Slam cycles Strng recmmendatins by the ITF Officiating Department, Natinal Federatins and Chief Umpires frm the Australian Open, French Open, and Wimbledn ATP ratings fr thse wh have wrked ATP turnaments in the United States Recmmendatins frm selected ITF and ATP Chair Umpires Recmmendatins frm the US Open Chief Umpire s Staff wh hld an ITF Chief Umpire certificatin 5. Tentative selectins fr all Line Umpires are made by the Cmmittee with final apprval by the US Open Referee as per the Grand Slam Rulebk. Initial assignments f selected Officials: 1. During the selectin and assignment prcess in April/May, tentative assignments f Line Umpires fr the final days f the US Open are determined by ratings frm the previus year s US Open and recent USTA and ATP evaluatins/ratings. Assignments fr the final days f the US Open 1. Line Umpire assignments fr the final days f the US Open are based n Line Umpire evaluatins frm that year s US Open frm: US Open Technical Advisrs Gld and Silver Badge Chair Umpire evaluatins US Open Chief Umpire s Staff There is n guarantee that any individual Line Umpire (either previusly assigned r extended) will be assigned t any match in Arthur Ashe Stadium. 2. All Chair Umpire assignments fr Main Draw Men s and Wmen s Singles/Dubles and Mixed Dubles matches (including the final days f the US Open) are determined by the US Open Referee in cnsultatin with the US Open Chief Umpire. All ther Chair Umpire assignments are determined by: Previus year s US Open chair evaluatins frm ITF certified chair umpires Overall Chair Umpire experience USTA Pr Circuit Supervisr feedback Level and quantity f events wrked during the current year Page 3 f 5

4 The US Open Referee, in cnsultatin with the US Open Chief Umpire, is the final authrity n all daily assignments, as per the Grand Slam rulebk. These US Open Officials Selectin Guidelines are subject t change at the discretin f the USTA. Any changes will be psted accrdingly The USTA recgnizes diversity as essential t achieving ur missin t prmte and develp the grwth f tennis. We are cmmitted t achieving greater diversity thrughut the sprt and fstering a tennis envirnment that is mre inclusive. The USTA des nt permit discriminatin n the basis f gender, race, r any ther prhibited basis in the selectin and assignment f Umpires t turnaments and matches. All qualified Umpires will be affrded equal pprtunities t fficiate bth men s and wmen s matches. The USTA Officiating Department, where it has the authrity t d s, will seek t assign qualified Umpires t matches, including late rund matches, in numbers apprximating their demgraphic representatin (e.g. gender, race) in the qualified pl f applicants available fr such matches.
