Charles Daniel accepted the challenge.f putting tgether Western Kentucky University's first-ever w.men s v.lleyball team in 98 and pr.mptly went.ut and tackled a rugged schedule with a gr.up f inexperienced, but dedicated and hardw.rking athletes. Fr.m that inaugural 2-8 rec.rd, the Lady T.ppers have pr.gressed in leaps and bunds. During the 982 seas.n, Daniel's charges tackled an.ther rig.r.us schedule and emerged with a vastly impr.ved rec.rd. His third Lady T.pper squad, the 983 WKU v.lleyballers, then imprved even m.re, psting the sch..l's first winning seasn with a 30-7 rec.rd. The 984 squad, with its experience and depth, c.mpiled a 28-5 rec.rd. A native.f N.rf.lk, Va., Daniel established himself as a successful head c.ach at that city's Eastern Academy High Sch..l. Amng his credentials are eight years f experience as head cach.f b.th men's and w.men's basketball teams. In additi.n, he c.ached his w.men's s.ftball team t. a state title and went.n t. finish eighth at the nati.nals. Daniel als. served as w.men's v.lleyball c.ach f.r f.ur years, leading his squads t. first, secnd and third place finishes in league c.mpetiti.n. Daniel received his B.S. in physical educati.n/ health/recreati.n at Old D.mini.n in 969, his M.S. in physical educati.n/ health/recreati.n fr.m Rh.de Island in '75, his Ed.S. in adaptive physical educati.n at Ge.rge Peab.dy in '79 and his Ed.D. in adaptive physical educati.n fr.m Vanderbilt in 980. He and his wife, the f.rmertabitha Carwile, have.ne sn, Wesley, 5, and.ne daughter, C.urtney, nine mnths. Graduate Assistant Marcia Ball A native f Nrf.lk, Va., Marcia Ball c.mes t. the Hill fr.m Virginia C.mm.nwealth where she earned her bachel.r's degree in physical educati.n and health.. While helping c.ach the v.lleyball team at Western, she will be w.rking.n a master's in physical educati.n. While atvcu, she lettered in v.lleyball f.ur years. During her seni.r year at VCU she was named that sch..l's "Female Athlete-f-the-Year." And, she was h.n.red.n the Sun Belt's AII-c.nference v.lleyball team. As a c.llege freshman, Ball als. played basketball f.r the Rams. And, as a s.ph.m.re, the athletic Ball participated n VCU 's s.ftball club team. Graduate Assistant Blanche Watkins A fur-year letter-winner with the M.ntevall. (Ala.) University v.lleyball team, Watkins will be w.rking with the WKU v.lleyball squad as a graduate assistant this seas.n. At Mntevall., Watkins earned a B.A. in physical and health educati.n. She will be wrking.n an M.S. in physical educati.n and health at Western. Vlunteer Assistant DuQ Harlw F.r the sec.nd straight year, D.ug Harl.w will be.ffering his services t. the LadyT.pper vlleyball team as a vlunteer c.ach. 4 985 Outlk The 985 Western Kentucky wmen's vlleyball team will face its tughest schedule since becming a varsity sprt in 98. " This is the tughest schedule we have ever had," said fifth year Head Cach Charlie Daniel. ''But, we plan t be a very cmpetitive team." And, the Lady Tppers will face a number f quality teams, including Suth Carlina, Flrida, Memphis State, Nrth Carlina, Clemsn and Gergia Tech. " We may nt have the kind f recrd that we have had the past tw years because we are playing against such excellent teams, but we expect t have a gd year. It will be a real learning experience fr us," explained Daniel. This year's squad is very yung. Only six players return frm last year's 28-5 squad and nly three f thse were starters. Acting as this seasn's captains are senirs Kathy Mran, a 6-0 center hitter, and 8eth Ryan, a 5-7 strng side hitter. Mran was the 984 team's leading striker and blcker. She was named the MVP at the 984 Tpper Sma~ Turnament, which WKU wn. The third captain, junir striker Teresa Harrisn, als returns t the Lady Tpper lineup. The 5-8 Harrisn earned Sun Belt Cnference All-Academic laurels and, during her freshman year, she was an hnrable mentin AII-SBC player. The ther returnees are: junir center hitter Tamlyn Nelsn, wh walked n and made the squad last year; sphmre hitter Cindy Edlin; and sphmre setter Dnna Inghram, wh was redshirted last seasn. The seven freshmen wh have been added t the Tpper rster will have t learn the rpes quickly if the team expects t have a gd seasn. "We have a squad that is made up predminately f freshmen. They are a gd bunch f girls and they are wrking very hard," stated Daniel. He hpes that his rugged 985 schedule, which includes nly three hme matches, will prvide his yung squad with the experience they will need by the time the Sun Belt Cnference Turnament arrives. One plus fr the Lady Tppers is that the SBC champinship turnament will be hsted by Western in E.A. Diddle Arena (Nv. 4-6). 6 The Sun aelt Cnference It's been a nine-year success stry and the best is yet tcme fr the Sun Belt Cnference as it enters its tenth seasn f intercllegiate athletics. Under the guidance f Cmmissiner Vic Bubas, frmer caching great at Duke and the Chairman f the NCAA Divisin I Basketball Cmmittee, the Sun Belt has prspered and achieved natinal recgnitin. The league sanctins men's and wmen's champinships in nine sprts. The eight league members include Alabama at Birmingham, Jacksnville, Nrth Carlina Charltte, Old Dminin, Suth Alabama, Suth Flrida, Virginia Cmmnwealth and Western Kentucky. In the spring f 983, the Sun Belt Cnference athletic directrs vted t include wmen's vlleyball as a cnference sprt and set up the first ever cnference turnament which was hsted by Western Kentucky University. Seven schls participated in the league turnament. (Old Dminin is the nly cnference schl that des nt have a vlleyball prgram.) The turnament is set up in a rund-rbin frmat with the fur tp teams cmpeting fr the champinship title. At the inaugural SBC turnament. Jacksnville defeated UAB 0-5, 4-6, 5-5, 5-0, 5-6 in the champinship after cmpleting the rund-rbin tied fr first w ith Suth Flrida (5 -). Jacksnville was the hst f the 984 Sun Belt Turnament, which was wn by Virginia Cmmnwealth. The VCU Rams (5-) were secnd in the rund-rbin cmpetitin, and dwned first place Suth Flrida (6-0) 5-8, 0-5, 5-, 5-2. The 985 Sun Belt Cnference Turnament will again be held at E.A. Diddle Arena n the Western Kentucky campus (Nv. 4-6).
