1 Key Decisins / Infrmatin BWF Cuncil Meeting KL 2010 Backgrund The BWF Cuncil held its first tw meetings f the year in Kuala Lumpur n Friday 14 May and the secnd n Friday 21 May The belw prvides the key infrmatin and decisins f Cuncil. The Cuncil Cmmittees which met last week were: a) Marketing Cmmittee Chair V.K. Verma b) Events Cmmittee Chair Paisan Rangsikitph c) Develpment Cmmittee Chair David Cabell d) IOC- Internatinal Relatins Cmmittee Chair Trsten Berg e) Administratin Cmmittee Chair Peter Gacheru f) Finance Cmmittee Chair Dat Lim Teng Kiat g) Cntinental Cnfederatins Cmmittee Chair Dr Kang Yung Jng Next meeting Dates Saturday 28 August 2010 BWF Executive Bard Meeting Paris, France Saturday 28 May 2011 BWF Annual General Meeting - Qingda, China a) Marketing Cmmittee The recmmendatins frm the Octagn reprt adpted by the Cuncil meeting in Bali 27 Nvember 2009 highlighted the fllwing: One f the key factrs fr success in the future in marketing the sprt is t build badmintn s fan base Imprtance f media and cmmunicatins was stressed the capacity f the sprt t maximize media expsure Quality and cnsistency acrss BWF / Super Series events t be significantly upgraded in sprts presentatin and televisin prductin It was imprtant t enhance quality f the prduct and therefre enhance value f prperties (events). Since Nvember the BWF has implemented a number f the key recmmendatins frm the Octagn reprt and the meeting in KL cnfirmed sme f the utcmes. The BWF Cuncil cnfirmed the hsts fr the Super Series The 11 hst cuntries f the 12 event Super Series circuit fr are: BWF Cuncil Decisins / Infrmatin KL 21 May 2010 Meeting Page : 1

2 Key Decisins / Infrmatin BWF Cuncil Meeting KL 2010 Denmark, England, France, Hng Kng, India (new), Indnesia, Japan, Krea, Malaysia, Singapre and China (hsting tw legs). The BWF had received 17 applicatins frm Member Assciatins t hst a Super Series event. The Super Series has 12 events (Premier Super Series and Super Series) and a Super Series Masters Finals. The Premier Super Series has a higher level f prize mney, mre TV prductin days tgether with ther bligatin fr the hsts and tp 10 players. The BWF received eight applicatins t be a Premier Super Series hst and the BWF Cuncil cnfirmed 5 f the Super Series events as Premier Super Series. These are: Krea Open All England Indnesia Open Denmark Open China Open Each Premier Super Series event ffers a minimum f USD$350,000. The Cuncil was pleased t nte that there were significant ffers f prize mney frm Krea and Indnesia. The Krean Badmintn Assciatin ffer means the Victr Krean Open 2011 will be the first badmintn event ever t ffer mre than USD $1,000,000 in prize mney. The Krea Open in 2011 will have a prize pl f USD$1.2m and the Indnesia Open will have a prize pl f USD$600,000. The ther Premier Super Series will have minimum prize mney f USD$350,000. All ther Super Series events fr ffer a minimum prize pl f USD$200,000. The BWF Executive Bard at its meeting in Birmingham in March had cnfirmed the Agencies fr Spnsrship and Media rights fr the Super Series. Ttal Sprts Asia (TSA Kuala Lumpur) is the Media Agency fr the Super Series and the Enterprise Sprts Grup (Singapre) is the Spnsrship Agency. 3 Key Decisins / Infrmatin BWF Cuncil Meeting KL 2010 b) Events Cmmittee BWF Wrld Junir Champinships 2010 The Cuncil nted that the BWF Wrld Junir Champinships, Guadalajara Mexic April 2010 were successfully hsted with 24 teams cmpeting fr the Suhandinata Cup (Teams Cmpetitin) and a further 9 cuntries fr the individual champinships a ttal f 33 cuntries. There was a strng representatin frm Pan America, with 11 cuntries taking part - a significant increase n previus BWF Wrld Junir Champinships (Eurpe had 10 cuntries cmpeting, Asia 11, Africa 1 cuntry). BWF Wrld Ranking Pints The BWF Events Cmmittee reviewed the Wrld Ranking Pints system and amendments were adpted at the Cuncil meeting. The new system includes Wrld Ranking Pints fr BWF Premier Super Series and BWF Super Series Masters Finals frm The new pints system will be circulated t Members in a separate mem. Player Obligatins Super Series Events The Cuncil apprved amendments t the Super Series Regulatins t include tp 10 wrld ranking player cmmitments and bligatins including cmpeting in all 5 Premier Super Series Events, cmpeting in 4 ther Super Series Events and cmpulsry attendance at the BWF Super Series Masters Finals. Technical Officials Lndn 2012 Olympic Games The Cuncil endrsed recmmendatins frm the Technical Officials Cmmissin fr appintments t Lndn 2012 Olympic Games. Thse appinted are: Technical Delegate - Paisan Rangsikitph Referee - Trsten Berg Deputy Referees - Charltte Ackerman (USA) and Dennis Li (HKG) One mre Deputy Referee will be appinted later in 2010 r This appintment will mst likely cme frm either Oceania r Africa. General Cmpetitin Regulatins BWF Sanctin Plicy. Changes t the BWF Cmpetitin Regulatins and the WR new pints system will be circulated t Members in a separate mem. Other Decisins related t Events Cmmittee The Cuncil apprved n penalty fr the late cancellatin f the 2010 Thailand Open due t reasns f frce majeure. c) Develpment Cmmittee BWF Develpment Department Prjects The BWF Develpment Department is making gd prgress n the fur 4 key prjects: Schls Prject this is a prject t develp a schls starter kit fr teachers wh are taking badmintn sessins with their children / class fr the first time. This starter kit cnsists f a set f equipment tgether with sessin / lessn plans fr beginning badmintn. This is designed t equip teachers with the knwledge and skills t ensure children have a fun and enjyable badmintn experience frm their first cntact with the game. The prject will be implemented in mid Cach Educatin Prject a prject that is lking at develping a curse fr the BWF s this is available fr Member Assciatins where there is n cach educatin curse syllabus / cach educatin materials. Online Questinnaire a questinnaire develped t find ut mre infrmatin abut ur Members and their needs. The survey will be cnducted in June All Members will be asked t cmplete the questinnaire this will be nline. This will be the first cmprehensive survey f ur membership and it will prvide very useful data fr the BWF and ur Cntinental Cnfederatin clleagues. Equipment fr Cntinental Cnfederatins The BWF allcates a USD$10,000 grant t each Cntinental Cnfederatin fr badmintn equipment. The BWF had negtiated very cmpetitive pricing frm YONEX based n a streamlined rdering service. d) IOC & Internatinal Relatins Cmmittee Parabadmintn The BWF has signed an MOU with the Parabadmintn Wrld Federatin (PBWF) t integrate PBWF int the BWF and the sprt f parabadmintn. Paul Kurz, President f the PBWF made a presentatin t the BWF Cuncil meeting n 14 May t cnvey PBWF s cmmitment t integratin f the rganizatin and the sprt. Integratin = the inclusin and active participatin f thse frm the parabadmintn cmmunity in the gvernance, management, develpment and regulatin f the sprt f parabadmintn under the auspices f ne recgnized internatinal federatin (IF) the BWF. There is a strng desire t ensure integratin and representatin fr the sprt at the Cntinental and Natinal levels f badmintn Key gals regarding the integratin: 1. Develp parabadmintn as a sprt n all levels 2. BWF as an IPC (Internatinal Parabadmintn Cmmittee) Recgnized Internatinal Federatin 3. 6 Key Decisins / Infrmatin BWF Cuncil Meeting KL 2010 Jim Mackay Medical / classificatins Lyndn Williams Develpment Eyal Bachar - Player representative Stuart Brrie Administratin e) Administratin Cmmittee Pakistan Internatinal 2008 Cancellatin Fee Fllwing a letter frm the Pakistan Natinal Olympic Cmmttee, the Cuncil agreed t waive the cancellatin fee fr the Pakistan Internatinal in 2008 n grunds the cancellatin was due t frce majeure. Award Regulatins The Cuncil amended the BWF Award Regulatins. The BWF Awards Cmmittee is develping plans fr an annual player awards night / functin t acknwledge and celebrate the achievements f the Male Player f the Year, Female Player f the Year and Eddie Chng Mst Prmising Player f the Year award frm the previus year. Prpsed amendments t By-Laws Athletes Cmmissin t ensure that any badmintn player serving n IOC Athletes Cmmissin r any ther such athlete s bdy culd be included in the Athlete s Cmmissin with full vting rights. Membership The BWF Cuncil admitted t the membership f the BWF the fllwing: Tnga Natinal Badmintn Assciatin Venezuelan Badmintn Federatin Kiribati Badmintn Federatin Under clause 13 f the cnstitutin, and with the supprt frm US Badmintn, the BWF Cuncil accepted the Nrthern Marianas Badmintn Assciatin as an Assciate Member. 7 Key Decisins / Infrmatin BWF Cuncil Meeting KL 2010 Cnstitutin Wrking Grup The BWF Cuncil established a Cnstitutin Wrking Grup in Nvember 2009 with a view t amending parts f the Cnstitutin t be presented t the membership in May The Wrking Grup has cnsulted bth the Cuncil and the Cntinental Cnfederatins and will be drafting the amendments in July ver 2 days f dedicated time t this prcess. The Members will then have an pprtunity t cmment n the draft befre the Nvember Cuncil meeting. The Cuncil will prpse the changes at the May 2011 meeting.
