8 Abut the Sprt Badmintn is a sprt, which can be played and enjyed by peple f all ages. The sprt is played indrs and is therefre unaffected by the weather. The exact rigin f the game, traced back t ancient Greece and China mre than 2000 years ag. It is believed that the game descended directly frm the ancient game f battledre and shuttlecck. This was primarily a children's game althugh 19th century illustratins shw adults playing it mstly in the garden and smetimes indrs. Battledre and shuttlecck has been described as a leisurely pastime whereby players cunt the number f hits and try t keep the shuttlecck up in the air as lng as pssible. There is als sme dispute abut hw mdern day badmintn started. One claim is that it started in England at Badmintn Huse in Glucestershire in the middle f the 19th century. A net, in the frm f a string, was strung acrss t separate the players frm tw ppsing teams. A rival claim is that the game was first played by the British in India in the 1870s befre it was brught back t Britain by returning army fficers. The first attempt t establish the rules f the game was made arund that time in Pna, India. But n frmal rules were drawn up until the Badmintn Assciatin (f England) was frmed in The Badmintn Wrld Federatin The Internatinal Badmintn Federatin (IBF) was frmed in It has since changed name in September 2006 t Badmintn Wrld Federatin (BWF). The funder members were England, Sctland, Ireland, Wales, Hlland, Denmark, New Zealand, Canada and France. Tday, the BWF has mre than 130 member cuntries frm five cntinental cnfederatins - Badmintn Africa, Badmintn Asia, Badmintn Eurpe, Badmintn Oceania and Badmintn Pan- America. Badmintn Australia,

9 The Thmas Cup The first turnament was held at the Queen's Hall in Prestn in February The late Sir Gerge Thmas, funder president f the IBF, dnated the Thmas Cup trphy. Malaya wn the first cmpetitin when they defeated Denmark 8-1 in the final. Since then, the Cup has stayed with three Asian cuntries. Indnesia has wn it a recrd 12 times, fllwed by Malaysia (five times) and China (fur times). Denmark has reached the final n six ccasins but has never wn it. Fr the first 12 series until 1982, the Thmas Cup was held nce every three years. Since 1984, the cmpetitin has been staged every tw years. The playing frmat was als changed frm the best f nine matches ver tw days t best f five ver ne day. The Uber Cup The first Uber Cup cmpetitin was held at Lytham St. Anne s in Lancashire, England, in 1957 fllwing calls t rganise an internatinal team champinship fr wmen similar t the Thmas Cup. The Uber Cup trphy was dnated by Mrs H.S Uber. The United States wn the first turnament when they defeated Denmark 6-1 in the final. The Uber Cup was held every three years until Since 1986, the turnament has been held every tw years. Only fur cuntries - the USA, Japan, China and Indnesia - have managed t win the Uber Cup. Internatinal Cmpetitins Badmintn's intrductin as an fficial medal sprt at the 1992 Barcelna Olympics served prf f the game's prgress and increasing ppularity. Fur events - the men's singles, wmen's singles, men's dubles and wmen's dubles - were held in Barcelna. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the mixed dubles event was added. The Wrld Junir Champinships, nw an annual affair, was als inaugurated in 1992 at Jakarta. The Wrld Champinships was started much earlier at Malm in After the Wrld Champinships was subsequently held in Jakarta in 1980 and Cpenhagen in 1983, it has als becme a biennial affair since 1985 when it was held at Calgary; hwever the Wrld Champinships are nt held in an Olympic Games year. 11 Natinal Caching Accreditatin Scheme Supprted by Badmintn Australia (BA), the Natinal Caching Accreditatin Scheme (NCAS) is an initiative f the Australian Sprts Cmmissin (ASC). The NCAS is a prgressive cach educatin prgram ffering curses at varius levels. The NCAS aims t ffer educatin, training and natinally recgnised qualificatins t peple caching beginner thrugh t elite athletes. Caches f children, adults, veterans, athletes with a disability at club, schl, reginal, state r natinal level can becme mre effective caches thrugh participatin in the NCAS. Badmintn is ne f 90 sprts that participate in the NCAS. The NCAS wrks t: Increase cnfidence and cmpetence in caching ability; Prmte an nging prgressive imprvement f knwledge and expertise; Incrprate the basics f sprts science, enabling a mre in-depth apprach t caching; Prmte the use f safe and cntemprary caching techniques; Prvide a structure t imprve cmmunicatin skills; Encurage the develpment f innvative caching techniques; Prvide quality cntrlled learning in all training prgrams; Increase the enjyment f sprt fr caches and athletes. T supprt this, Badmintn Australia maintains a Natinal Cach Educatin- Develpment Prgram that effectively and efficiently meets the needs f ur sprt and members, and prvides caches with clear develpment pathways. Curse Accreditatin Level Curse Descriptin Curse Length Level 1 Is nt a prerequisite fr the Level 1 (advanced) curse. 15 BA Cach Accreditatin Prgram T be awarded BA-NCAS caching accreditatin, caches must meet the fllwing: Attend a BA apprved badmintn caching curse and successfully cmplete all f the requirements set fr accreditatin; r Meet the requirements fr Recgnitin f Current Cmpetency (RCC) status (refer BA RCC Plicy-Prcedure); and Cmply with all plicies/cde f behaviur as set by BA and the State r Territry Assciatin. Recgnitin f Current Cmpetency There will be n hnrary accreditatin. All caches must satisfy the cmpetencies f particular level f accreditatin. Hwever, sme practicing caches may be able t satisfy all r part f the cmpetencies fr a particular level withut having t underg a frmal curse/assessment. T apply fr exemptin, candidates must cmplete the Recgnitin f Current Cmpetency (RCC) applicatin frm and frward it t the Training Prgram Prvider/ABCC fr cnsideratin. (see Applicants must prvide the required supprting dcumentatin (e.g. Level 1 Caching Principles Certificate, University transcripts). RCC assessment will be cnducted using the NCAS RCC Assessment frm. Candidates will be infrmed that: They have successfully met all cmpetencies and will therefre be granted RCC and accreditatin; r They have nly been successful in gaining cmpetency in certain mdules within the Training Prgram and that they will need t liaise with Training Prgram Prvider/ABCC in relatin t the achievement f the remainder f the Training Prgram cmpetencies; r They have achieved nne f the Training Prgram cmpetencies and will be required t attend all cmpnents f the Training Prgram. The candidate may be required t demnstrate their expertise in a particular area. Fr example, applicants may be required t successfully cmplete a Caching Principles Curse and/r attend a practical caching assessment sessin and/r prvide a vide f a training sessin fr assessment. Updating Badmintn Australia-Natinal Caching Accreditatin Scheme (NCAS) Cach Accreditatin lasts fr a 4-year perid. Caches that have remained active and have met the updating requirements specific t their accreditatin level ver this perid may apply t the Badmintn Australia fr the renewal f their natinally recgnised accreditatin. 14

Updating prvides caches with an pprtunity t keep up-t-date with the latest infrmatin and develpments in badmintn such as, rule changes, new sht prductin techniques, tactics and caching methds. Updating als plays an imprtant rle in ensuring that the caching envirnment is safe fr all participants and thus reducing the likelihd f caches becming invlved in legal actins. Furthermre, it prvides Badmintn Australia with an up-t-date register f active caches. What d I have t d t update? In rder fr yu t maintain r regain yur Caching Accreditatin, yu are required t shw evidence that yu are actively caching, and have been invlved in a cnstant prcess f further educatin. Updating is divided int tw specific sectins: SECTION A: Practical Caching A cach must ver 4-year perid accumulate and dcument a minimum number f hurs f practical caching.
