Qualificatin Overview On cmpletin f the Certificate in Bicycle Mechanics Level 3 yu will have gained 67 twards the 122 credits required t becme a qualified bike mechanic. The qualificatin is taught ver 22 weeks. Cmpletin f the Level 3 prgramme will enable yu t prgress nt the Certificate in Bicycle Mechanics Level 4 (Bike Mechanic) prgramme. This sees the learning restricted t the fllwing practices and des nt include diagnsis ie: the act f determining thrugh analysis the nature r cause f the prblem. Service the act f making fit fr use, including meeting cmpliance with peridic maintenance as stipulated by the manufacturer r warranty Adjustment the act f altering t achieve accuracy t cnfrm t a standard r manufacturers specificatin(s) Replace the act f substituting ne part fr anther due t it being brken, inefficient, lst r n lnger wrking as wuld be expected As such yu will be able t perfrm all standard bike assembly & set ups, servicing and adjustment f bicycle systems and cmpnents and will have a sund knwledge f bicycle terminlgy, tling, equipment and reference texts used in the New Zealand bicycle industry. The weekly schedule will see yu training in ur specialist wrkshp and cmpleting blcks f wrk experience within an perating specialist bicycle wrkshp envirnment. There is n requirement t purchase tling r specialised equipment. Entry Criteria Prspective candidates need t have cmpleted a minimum f 10 years frmal schling (Year 10). Learning demands begin at a Year 10 secndary schling level, 5.5 IELTS scre r a TOEFL scre f 500. This is the qualificatin that will prepare yu t enter the wrkplace as a bike mechanic. Yu will be able t wrk as a safe, prfessinal manner and maintain the standards expected within the bike industry. Qualificatin Overview On cmpletin f the Certificate in Bicycle Mechanics Level 4 yu will have gained the remaining 55 credits f the 122 credits required t becme a qualified bike mechanic. This qualificatin is taught ver 18 weeks full-time, r part-time/blck depending n demand. Yu will acquire the knwledge f bike technlgies and develp the skills t diagnsis faults within a large range f current bicycle types, systems and cmpnents in ur fully specialist wrkshp and participating wrkplaces. The Level 4 prgramme is defined by the term Diagnsis, Overhauling and Repairing f bicycles this includes: Diagnsis - the prcess determining the nature r cause f a prblem thrugh analysis which may include eliminatin, fault finding and fault islatin Overhauling making repairs, adjustments r the replacement f cmpnent(s) within a system due t wear, damage r nn cmpatibility. Repair - fixing and/r mdifying a cmpnent due t it being brken, wrn, inefficient r n lnger wrking as wuld be expected As such yu will be able t: Diagnse faults and perfrm all standard bike repairs Overhaul a large range f current bicycle systems and cmpnents Operate within a specialist wrkshp whilst adhering t NZ Safety Standards Utilise reference infrmatin required t cmplete bicycle repairs The prgramme cntent will be facilitated within yur weeks f study via a cmprehensive schedule which yu will be supplied with prir t cmmencing. The intent f this is t enable yu t apply the knwledge and skills yu have learned n the prgramme t a wrk place envirnment. Gaining valuable n-jb experience and knwledge will see yu further develping yur skills, and as a result f expsing yu t repetitin and practice, it will see yu mving twards attaining industry speed. The wrk experience ccurs within participating bicycle retail utlets and wrkshps. Crnerstne Educatin can prvide the supprt and cntacts fr numerus bicycle businesses hwever learners are actively encuraged t engage with wrkplaces under their wn initiative in the first instance. This may see yu fstering an existing relatinship yu have r it can be seen as an pprtunity t frge new relatinships within the industry. On numerus ccasins this apprach has als led t meaningful emplyment. Self-Directed Learning Each week yu will be given set tasks t cmplete as self-directed learning. These tasks are designed t further develp yur general and prduct knwledge, and practice tpics taught during class. These activities will include develping prfiles fr the tling and equipment, cnsumables, reference texts and building yur knwledge f the cmmn faults that present themselves n the varius brands f bike cmpnents in the marketplace. 13 P a g e

14 2018 Bike Mechanic Prgrammes / NZQA Apprved Duratin and Prgramme f Study Schedule The full prgramme f study is 40 weeks in duratin. This cnsists f a 22 week schedule t cmplete Level 3, and an 18 week schedule t cmplete Level 4. Included in this schedule are hlidays and wrk experience. The prgramme is facilitated during the week n set days in the specialised wrkshp (between Mnday Friday), and the wrk experience is split int weeklng blcks. Yu will be prvided with a schedule n cmmencement f the prgramme which will ntify yu f the dates that yu will be required t attend. Yu will als be required t cmplete apprximately 3 6 hurs f self-directed learning each week which is set by the tutr. Hlidays will be scheduled thrugh the prgramme. Yu may be required t cmplete self directed learning during sme f the hliday perid t further yur knwledge r t prvide pprtunity fr individuals t catch up. New Zealand Public Hlidays and Anniversary days will be taken as they fall in the calendar year thrughut the prgramme. Assessment Yu will be assessed n bth theretical and practical wrk thrughut the prgramme. The assessments will be carried ut at regular intervals as yu prgress thrugh the utcmes within the standards in the prgrammes. All assessment will cunt twards the credits required fr each f the qualificatins.
