NCAA Wmen s Triathln Triathln is an NCAA Emerging Sprt fr Wmen. Emerging Sprts are recgnized by the NCAA and are intendedd t assist institutinss in prviding mre athletic pprtunities fr wmen, mre sprt spnsrship ptins fr institutins and t help that sprt achieve NCAA champinship status. As f Nvember 2015, 12 institutins have cmmitted t establishing varsity wmen s triathln prgrams ver the next 1 3 years. Infrmatinn can be fund at usatriathln.rg/ncaa.

2 USA Triathln Wmen s Triathln Emerging Sprt Grant This grant prgram is a $2.6 millin investment ff funds frm USA Triathln, allwing institutins t develp, grw and sustain varsity NCAAA wmen s triathln prgrams. Athletes are encuraged t wrk with their respective high schls t start a triathln club t grw the multisprt lifestyle at the high schl level. Please keep in mind that sme high schl administratins have a prcess t start a new club and als require a minimum amunt f student interest t frmally start a club. The recgnized club structures are listed belw t ffer club ptins at all stages f grwth. Athletes racing independent f a high schl club (i.e.: Independent High Schl Club r Regin Based Club) are welcme t participate in the prgram and are encuraged t recruit their fellw high schl classmates t get invlved in the sprt and start a USAA Triathln registered club. Club Structures fr High Schl Prgram USA Triathln recgnizes the fllwing club structures fr thee High Schll Prgram: Regin Based Clubs: Cmprised f high schl age athletes lcated in the same schl district r surrunding regin Once a schl has reached the minimum designated by their high schl t create a club, thse students will separate frm the regin club and act as an independent club. OR Once a schl has 8 (eight) student athletes cmpeting as part f the regin club, then the student athletes must race separately frm the regin based club and scre as an independent club within the state. This separatin will ccur at the start f the fllwing seasn. A new club mustt be registered with USA Triathln t represent the Independent High Schl Club. The athletes can cntinue t train with the Regin Based club, but must race andd scre fr their Independent High Schl Club at High Schl Designated races. Unless a schl has a required minimum f interested student athletes t frm a club, USA Triathln has set an encuraged minimumm t eight (8). Please cntact highschl@usatriathln.rg with any questins.

3 At the beginning f the seasn, clubs must submit their rster t highschl@usatriathln.rg t mnitr the transitin frm Regin Based Club t Independent Club. The club name must include regin in the club name t designate that this is a Regin based club rather than an Independent Club [fr example, Suthern Clrad Regin]. Hme schl athletes are allwed t participate in a Regin Based Club. This club structure is nt intended t be a permanentt structure. It serves t allw the athletes t cmpete n a club within their state, but must als be wrking t grw the participatin numbers t becme an Independent High Schl Club. Independent High Schl Clubs: Represented byy student athletes frm ne single high schl. Full time students frm the same schl (private r public). May include hme schled athletes wh are zned t attend the high schl. Hme schled athletes cannt represent mre than ne Independent High Schl Club within a schl year.. The encuraged minimum club size is 8, but is nt required. Refer t Regin Based Club fr the recmmended club structure fr club size f 7 r less student athletes.. The recmmended club size (8) iss set t encurage club grwth. As the prgram grws, the club scring will eventually scre the tp 4 female athletes and tp 4 male athletes frm each club. Currently, club scres are calculated with the tp 2 female athletes and tp 2 male athletes frm each club. Suggested High Schl Club Training Envirnments: USA Triathln Certified Cach led grup wrkuts Train with a USA Triathln Registered Club (high schl aged, lcal age grup club, r USA Triathln High Perfrmancee Team) High schl recgnized club and interested faculty advisr led

4 Independent athlete training, fr example: USA Triathln supprted High Perfrmance Teams r members f club swim teams r high schl track teams, wh cmpete as a team at lcal triathln races Hmeschl Athletes: Hmeschl athletes can cmpete fr the public r private high schl they wuld attend at the schl district level based n their residence. In summary, a high schl athlete has the fllwing ptins: Race as an independent athlete Be a member f a Regin Based Club Be a member f an Independent Club (determined byy their place f residence) Same Gender Schls: Independent High Schl Clubs based at a schl whse attendance is cmprised f a single gender ppulatin ( all girls r alll bys ) can petitin t be scred with a club based at an ppsing single gender schl. This petitin must be cnfirmed with USA Triathln at the beginning f the seasn and the partnership is fr scring purpses nly. If there is ann established brther and sister sprt prgram relatinship, these tw schls can cmpete (scred) as ne club at designated high schl races. Eligibility Cllege Class Enrllment: If a student is cmpleting cllege level classes, the student must be registered as a high schl student t be eligible t participate in the High Schl Triathln Prgram. Age Eligibility: Incming freshmen are able t participate in the Highh Schl Triathln Prgram the summer befre their freshman year starting June 1. This is t allw the athlete t cmpete in their entire freshmen seasn, ending with the High Schl Natinal Champinships in the spring f their freshmen year. All senir year eligible students will cmplete their finall seasn with the High Schl Natinal Champinships during their furth year.

5 High Schl Natinal Champinships Maximum Attendance: All high schl athletes can cmpete at the High Schl Natinal Champinships n mre than fur times. The fllwing are viable grant request: Supprt High Schl Prgram develpment Club develpment and recruitment prgrams Travel stipendss (i.e. USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinship, lcal USA Triathln Sanctined Events) Facility use fees Club equipment (i.e. club specific gear, cmpetitin equipment r training equipment) Yuth & Junir Caching Certificatins fr team cach r adult team leader Grwth f the High Schl Triathln Prgram: The High Schl Triathln Prgram is being designed similarly t the USA Triathln Cllegiate Club Prgram, whereby there is much fcus n grwth, develpment and supprt f new prgramming withut an verabundance f legislatin and rules which can stifle key elements f develpment. It tk a few years t get the Cllegiate Club Prgram at the level it is tday. The cllegiate system currently supprts ver 180 triathln clubs acrss the cuntryy that cmpete within 10 Cllegiate Cnferences. Each Cllegiate Cnference has a designated race schedule fr the clubs t attend and race against ther clubs. The seasn culminates in the spring with the Cllegiate Club Natinal Champinships. Hwever, cmpeting at the Natinal Champinships is nt the nly fcus and racing pprtunity fr athletes. Many schls have created additinal racing pprtunities by either

6 develping their wn events r aligning with an area race directr t create an pprtunity t race head t head with thers in their respective lcatins. Lking tward the future f the USA Triathln High Schl Triathln Prgram, as high schl clubs are established, state based racing schedules can be determined. These will be races that highh schl clubs can race against ther clubs and a reginal basedd scring system will be implemented. Prjected Timeline: Year 1: academic schl year ending with the USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinships in Clemsn, Suth Carlina, n April 22, N previuss race participatin is required t cmpete in the 2016 USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinships; hwever, it is highly encuraged. Please see the 2016 High Schl Natinal Champinships event infrmatin belw. Year 2: academic schl year ending with the USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinship. Fr the time being, this Natinal Champinship will be held n the same week and same lcatin as the Cllegiate Club Natinal Champinships. The 2017 hst lcatin will be annunced sn. In year 2, we will see grwth in high schl club prgrams allwing fr high schl prgrams t race against each ther at lcal races. Fr the 2017 USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinships, participatin in a minimum f 1 (ne) USA Triathln Sanctined Event willl be required. This race requirement cannt include the 2016 USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinships. Year 3 and beynd: Cntinued grwth in high schl athlete participatin and club develpment. It is als helpful t have an identified adult in supprt f the triathln club wh can prvide versight as needed. This culd be a teacher, schl administratr, cach r vlunteer parent. Can I still participate in the High Schl Prgram if my schl des nt supprt creating a new club? It is imprtant t ask yur schl if yu are able t race at a high schl level event while acknwledging what high schl yu attend. Yu can participate in the High Schl Prgram as an individual athlete r as part f a club (Regin Based r Independent Club). Sme schls may nt allw yu t use their high schl name in yur club name. Fr example, during the High Schl Natinal

11 Champinship registratin yu will be prmpted t list what high schl yu attend. Be sure that yur high schl allws yu t list this infrmatin. Lking at the Cllegiate Club structure, mst cnferences set their race seasn t start the day after the USA Triathln Cllegiate Club Natinal Champinships and culminate with the Cllegiate Club Natinal Champinship ps the fllwing year. It s imprtant t identify the difference between the high schl, cllegiate club, and cllegiate varsity seasns and cmpetitins. The High Schl and Cllegiate Club Natinal Champinships take place in the spring timeframe, while the varsity wmen s triathln seasn ccurs frm September thrugh Nvember and is gverned by NCAA Legislatin. Why is the High Schl Prgram structured with multiple clubb ptins? We realize that at the start, yu might nt have enugh athletes t represent ne high schl. This club structure is a fluid ne that gives rm fr grwth. The Regin Based Club ptin is available t give athletes a way t participate in the prgram while wrking t increase participatin frm their schl. This club ptin is nt intended t be a permanent slutin. The Independent High Schl club mdel is the end gal fr the high schl athlete during the club grwth stage. The athletes willl graduate frm the Regin Based Club t becme an Independent High Schl Club that cnsists f athletes frm ne high schl. At the beginning f each seasn, the clubs must cmmunicate with USA Triathln hw they will functin fr that seasn and prvide a starting rster. At this time, yu will indicate if yu will be perating as an Independent Club r a Regin Based Club. If applicable, please indicate if yu will be aligning with a brther r sister schl. This shuld be shared with USA Triathln by June 1 f each year. This mdel is similar t the Natinal Interschlastic Cycling Assciatin (NICA) league mdel fr muntainn biking. 13 The USA Triathln High Schl Natinal Champinships will include a 750 meter pen water swim, a 20 kilmeter bike, and a 5 kilmeter run. State and Reginal cmpetitins will be recgnized at this distance, knwn as sprint, r shrter. Standard (r Olympic distance) ) races r lnger may be nt be included in the high schl prgram. Race age is determinedd by an athlete s age n 12/31 f the cmpetitin year. Race directrs have discretin t set a minimum age fr their events.
