3 Letter frm the Head Cach Dear Spirit Squad Prspect: Jining the Spirit Squad prgram at the University f Minnesta, means jining a rich traditin and a legacy that started ver 100 years ag. Cheerleading was invented in 1898 n the University f Minnesta campus, and ur funder s spirit and pride cntinue tday. Very few peple have had the privilege f participating in America s ORIGINAL cheerleading prgram. Within the last decade, ur teams have had a variety f ntable accmplishments. Gldy Gpher has wn 4 Masct Natinal Champinships, finished tp 5 fr the last 14 years, and twice named NCAA/ESPN Masct f the year. The Hckey Cheer Team is cmprised f talented figure skaters and has been recgnized n ESPN, Sprts Illustrated, USFS Skating Magazine and is amng the tp Hckey Cheerleading teams in the cuntry. The C-ed Cheer Team has cnsistently placed amng the tp 10 teams in the cuntry in ne f the mst cmpetitive divisins at UCA Cllege Cheer Natinals and finished 2 nd place in Game Day in Additinally, the U f M s All-Girl Cheer Team, ver the last 10 years, has finished tp 5 fur times in the mst cmpetitive divisin at UCA Cllege Cheer Natinals. The Dance Team has wn 18 Natinal Champinships and is by far the winningest athletic team n the U f M campus, winning 10 Jazz titles and 8 Pm titles. Alng with this great histry cmes a very serius sense f respnsibility. As a Spirit Squad member yu are a representative nt nly f the athletic teams and department yu supprt at this University, but als the entire State f Minnesta. Yu are the mst visible ambassadrs we have, and it is expected that yu cnduct yurself accrdingly n and ff the playing field. The Spirit Squad is cmprised f 6 teams and ver 100 dedicated student-athletes wh devte hurs weekly t practices, games, special appearances, camps/clinics, fundraising events, and cmpetitins. Spirit Squad athletes are als expected t maintain high academic standards and carry a full credit lad. Because f these respnsibilities, we are lking fr skilled and talented athletes, and well-runded students, wh embrace the ability t be cached, as well as find a healthy balance between athletics, schl, family, and friends. Our team members cme frm acrss the cuntry and many frm diverse backgrunds in dance, cheerleading, gymnastics, and skating. The cmmn-grund amngst all f ur prgram athletes is their dedicatin and cmmitment t this prgram. Our athletes believe that imprving as individuals, helps their team imprve as well. We are excited fr yur interest and believe that the rewards frm this experience cannt be measured. 4 DESCRIPTION/COMMITMENT ALL-GIRL CHEER TEAM The All Girl Cheer Team cnsists f all female cheerleaders wh cheer fr ftball and wmen s basketball games with an pprtunity t travel t away ftball games and basketball turnaments. Team members als perfrm at a variety f ff-campus appearances and they participate in all Spirit Squad fundraisers. The team has a year-lng time-cmmitment beginning each seasn at tryuts. CO-ED CHEER TEAM The C-ed Cheer Team cnsists f men and wmen wh cheer fr ftball and men s basketball games with an pprtunity t travel t away ftball and basketball turnaments. Team members als perfrm at a variety f ff-campus appearances and they participate in all Spirit Squad fundraisers. The team has a year-lng timecmmitment beginning each seasn at tryuts. When preparing fr Natinals, there will be additinal practices including sme 2/day practices during University breaks. Team activities d nt stp during Hliday Breaks/Spring Break. Expenses fr bth teams: (team members are able t keep whatever items they are required t purchase) Wmen: Team fee $350 (may include bdysuits, briefs, pms, utdr attire that cannt be returned) Men: Team fee $350 (may include utdr attire, and ther items that cannt be returned) Check is due at the first practice, separate frm the $50 tryut fee. In the event yu chse nt t hnr yur cmmitment and finish the seasn r yu are dismissed frm the prgram, yu will be required t reimburse the U f M fr the payments that have been made n yur behalf. 4

5 CHEER TRYOUT REQUIREMENTS ELIGIBILITY: Spring tryuts are pen t individuals wh have been accepted by the University f Minnesta, Twin Cities fr Fall Semester All participants, including transfer students and current team members, must have a minimum 2.0 GPA and have graduated frm high schl. Incming students must bring a cpy f their letter f acceptance n the first day f tryuts. Current U f M students must bring an unfficial transcript. TRYOUT PROCESS: Thrughut the week f clinics and the final tryut yu will be bserved by the U f M Caching Staff as well as a selectin cmmittee. There may be a tryut cut at any time during the clinics. At the final tryut, yu will be asked t individually perfrm specific skills; hwever, there is nt a pint system. The final decisins are made by the caching staff and/r a tryut selectin cmmittee. SKILLS: Yu will be asked t execute the skills listed belw fr tryuts. If yu haven t mastered all skills, d nt be discuraged. We are nt necessarily lking fr perfectin at this time, but we d want yu t cncentrate and perfect the skills that play t yur strengths. In additin t the skills listed, yu will be bserved thrughut the tryut clinics n yur attitude, ability t learn and make changes, enthusiasm, prjectin and verall perfrmance. We will be lking fr current and ptential skills t becme a cllegiate cheerleader. (NOTE: requirements are subject t change; yu will be infrmed f any changes at the first day f clinics.) The Minnesta cheer Ski-U-Mah, prnunced sky-yu-ma, is mre than 100 years ld: the wrd "ski" (which, accrding t legend, was an American Indian victry cry), and "U-Mah" (represents "University f Minnesta") were created by tw rugby players as an easy-t-remember team cheer. Rickhard, in respnse t a cntest t find an additinal fight sng fr the schl. The piece was riginally entitled Minnesta! Let s G! but is nw knwn as Minnesta Fight. Minnesta Fight has std the test f time and cntinues t be perfrmed regularly by the Minnesta Band. Minnesta, cme n, let s g!
