McCovey Chronicles SF Giants Minor Lines 6/26/17: Bryan Reynolds picks up another 4 hits Roger Perhaps you re thinking: there s just too much good news surrounding the organization these days. And you live in fear of the hanging shoe inevitably dropping to blight the happy vibes. To which I say: Giants Fan Who So Obviously Has Returned from a Long Trip Abroad, have I got the transaction for you! Yup. These are the days, alright. HIGHLIGHTS: Tyler Beede pitched 8 strong innings with 7 Ks; CJ Hinojosa doubles, HRs; Bryan Reynolds had four hits including 2 doubles, HR; Aramis Garcia hit 2 HRs; Sacramento won at El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres), 4-2 Sacramento Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG* Orlando Calixte 3B Jarrett Parker RF Mac Williamson LF Justin Ruggiano CF Jae-Gyun Hwang 1B Tim Federowicz C Juniel Querecuto SS Ali Castillo 2B Tyler Beede P Sacramento Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA* Tyler Beede (W, 4-5) Matt Reynolds Tyler Rogers (S, 2) Stepping in for Gregorio (though on six days rest himself), Tyler Beede delivered his best outing in a month. Beede went a season high 8 innings, throwing 102 pitches, and allowed just two runs in gaining his first road win in the PCL. It was the first start in which Beede had allowed two or fewer runs since May 23rd. One nice thing about Beede s recent stretch is that he has re-discovered a little swing and miss in his game, striking out 26 in his last four starts over 25.1 IP, while walking just 8. He was the victim of the long ball once again, getting touched up for two solo HRs in this game to account for all the scoring. He had just four hits overall though, so the big flies didn t hurt him as they had in the past. One can put some of the gopher ball tendencies on the PCL, but these days are tough times for fly ball pitchers in any league, so it would be good to put a rein on it. Or put another way, PCL gonna PCL, but Beede s allowed nearly half of the entire Sacramento staff s HRs in the month of June (11 of 25 total). Still, this outing in a tough ballpark was definitely a step forward.

Ali Castillo made Beede a winner, hitting a three-run triple in the top of the 6th. The RiverCats only other run came on Jae-Gyun Hwang s 7th HR of the year, a solo shot in the 4th. Tough call coming up for the org here. Despite getting time in at 3b and a (very) little rough time in LF, Hwang s mostly been confined to 1b lately and his power has almost entirely come on the road. He s hit 5 of his 7 HRs on the road and owns a.530 SLG on the road as compared to.418 at home. For a 29 year old he also displays some iffy K/Bb peripherals. It seems to me that the org sees Ryder Jones as a guy who can do almost everything Hwang can only better and younger, and may not have room for both at the major league level or really either until a couple trades get made to clear away some brush. We ll know if a few days, I guess. Richmond won at Trenton Thunder (Yankees), 3-2 Richmond Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG* Slade Heathcott CF C.J Hinojosa SS Miguel Gomez 2B Myles Schroder 3B Ryan Lollis 1B Brandon Bednar 1B Hunter Cole RF Daniel Carbonell DH Dylan Davis LF Jeff Arnold C Richmond Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA* Sam Coonrod Jarret Martin (W, 1-0) Ryan Halstead (H, 2) Tyler Cyr (S, 10) I got your danged power, RIGHT HERE!!!!! Cj Hinojosa seemingly shouted in an entirely fictitious interior monologue that I just made up and am very please with. Coming into the contest with just six extra base hits in nearly 160 PA, SS Hinojoa exploded in Trenton, power bursting at the seams like a new Avenger. In the 4th, Hinojosa doubled off Trenton flame thrower Domingo Acevedo (one of just four hits he allowed in 7 innings), ultimately coming around to score Richmond s first run on a two-out throwing error. And then in the top of the 8th with Jeff Arnold representing the tying run on 2b, Hinojosa really muscled up, jacking the game-winning HR out to LF, his first HR of the year. All coming on the same day that beloved former Squirrel SS Kelby Tomlinson hit his first major league XBH of the year. Coincidence? Hmmmm...

It was, as you can hear in the Trenton announcer s voice, a somewhat stunning turn of affairs, after Acevedo had dominated the Squirrels for 7 innings, striking out 9 and allowing just the one unearned run. Sam Coonrod wasn t as efficient, working through a lot of traffic in 5.2 innings, but he got through mostly unscathed, and the bullpen locked it down through the late innings. Tyler Cyr (that s SEAR by the way, for those who have asked) had a nice bounce back from Sunday s rough outing, picking up the save with a mostly unadventurous 9th inning. Bennett RF San Jose Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Mark Reyes (W, 4-9) Connor Kaden A happy return home, as the top of the Giants order hammered the Ports last night. Led by the 3-4 combination of Bryan Reynolds and Aramis Garcia, San Jose knocked out 13 hits including 8 XBH in the laugher. Bryan Reynolds is scorching hot this week. Yesterday he picked up four hits, including two doubles and a HR. Over the last three days, the top draft pick from 2016 has nearly accumulated two cycles of hits over his last three days, going 9 for 16 with two doubles, two triples and a HR (his 4th). Reynolds has met the Cal League assignment about as well as the Giants could have hoped for. After a slow April he got things turned around when the calendar turned and has hit.327/.360/.476 since May 1. The Ks are still high, as they tend to always be with Reynolds, and the walks could definitely stand to move up, but Reynolds continues to hit, as he has virtually everywhere he s ever played. Interestingly, his current SJ line (.312/.353/.462) is extremely similar to the line he posted last year in Salem-Keizer (.312/.368/.500). In each of the last two seasons the Giants have promoted their best Cal League performers shortly after the All Star break, and it won t be shocking if Reynolds gets that treatment, too. With CF depth in the system on the thin side I imagine they ll challenge Reynolds some more in the second half of the year. And a guy Reynolds could conceivably take with him to Richmond is Catcher Aramis Garcia. Garcia had just two hits in yesterday s game, but they both left the yard. With 10 HRs now, Garcia is 8th in the Cal League in homers, one behind team leader Gio Brusa. Let s enjoy a little back to back action as Reynolds and Garcia teamed up to pile it on the Ports:

There s a lot going on in that video. Reynolds with a tremendously quick bat (109 mph exit velocity!) and then Garcia with a long extended at bat ending with a hanger that he could really handle. And in between, the sufferings of Seth Brown who spent a considerable amount of the night with wadding in both nostrils, showing his toughness after suffering from a Canseco-esque indignity when chasing a fly ball. One last potential call-up alert, Ryan Howard returned to the lineup after missing a few days and went right back to hitting, picking up 3 hits and scoring 3 runs. Is he on the Slater/Cole/Hinjosa/Duggar/Shaw schedule too? Could be! Good times at the Muni! Hey, do you want to know the terrifying truth about the Giants system? Or do you want to watch Aramis Garcia hit some dingers? DINGERS! DINGERS! DINGERS! Do NOT throw this man a breaking ball up in the zone. Hey, trivia question: who hit the last cycle for the San Jose Giants? This comes courtesy of Joe Ritzo in the broadcast, so it s not like i had any idea either, but it s a beloved former prospect (answer at the bottom). Augusta beat West Virginia Power (Pirates), 2-0 Augusta Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG Johneshwy Fargas CF Cristian Paulino 3B Kelvin Beltre 2B Skyler Ewing C Jose Vizcaino Jr. DH Sandro Fabian RF Jacob Heyward LF Frandy De La Rosa 1B Brandon Van Horn SS Augusta Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA Domenic Mazza (W, 4-6) Wilson Santos (H, 2) Patrick Ruotolo (S, 6) All Star Dom Mazza had one of his best nights since his perfect game, going 7 shutout innings in a good old fashioned pitcher s duel with the Power s Eduardo Vera. Mazza struck out 6 while allowing just four hits and a walk. It was just the second start since his perfecto (back on April 25) in which Mazza has allowed no runs. The double shutout was broken up in the 7th when Sandro Fabian hit his 16th double of the season, driving in Skyler Ewing. Fabian himself would score the final run of the game when Jacob Heyward singled him in. Fabian continues creeping his numbers back up towards respectability. Following a brutal May, in which he hit.216 and had just a.486 OPS, he s hit.284/.301/.395 in the month of June, while

cutting the K rate down to 15.6% (it s 20% for the season). Baby steps, Sandro. I ll take the moment to recall that Christian Arroyo posted a.497 OPS in his aborted attempt at the Sally at the same age. Speaking of Jacob Heyward, he was the focus of a local news story last night, which you can see here: Salem-Keizer lost at the Boise Hawks (Rockies), 8-2 Salem Keizer Bats Player Pos AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO AVG* Malique Ziegler CF Kevin Rivera 2B Manuel Geraldo SS Ryan Kirby 1B Juan Rodriguez RF Richard Amion LF Mikey Edie LF Dylan Manwaring DH Byron Murray 3B John Riley C Salem-Keizer Arms Player IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA* Alex Bostic (L, 0-1) Cesar Yanez Nick Deeg Logan Webb The Volcanoes were definitely not erupting in game one of their set with the Hawks last night. In their defense, I ll point out that that s about an 8-9 hour bus ride with no stops and no road construction (yeah, likely) so a flat performance isn t terribly unexpected. The recently prolific offense was held to just six hits on the night, a third of which came from Kirt s kid, Dylan Manwaring. One of their other hits was 1b Ryan Kirby s 1st HR of the year, reportedly DEEP See! Also Malique Ziegler took the NWL lead in SB with his 9th swipe. But that s about all the good news to reports from Idaho continues to be rough on Alex Bostic and Cesar Yanez, who have yet to find an environment in America in which they can collect outs. It s just a struggle sometimes. Because it s really freakin hard. But a solid yay! for Logan Webb who keeps working his way back. That s now 6 Ks in 3 innings of work post-tj. The th rounder has K d 2 batters in each of his three, 1 inning appearances while allowing just two batters to reach base (both in his first time out). And without the bus ride. Really hot though. Beicker Mendoza and Angeddy Almanzar led the way with two hits apiece, as well as a loud out apiece according to friend of show Conner Penfold: Beicker was Sandro Fabian s running mate on the 2015 DSL champs, but he s been left behind since, it part apparently because of problems finding him a defensive home. Almanzar was easily the best offensive player on the 2016 DSL team, hitting.294/.373/.438 down there with 5 HRs. And apparently, he has other talents as well! Sidney Duprey had made two starts with Salem-Keizer, including one just last Friday, but he s been sent down to the Scottsdale camp to work on things apparently. Conner reported he was getting several swing throughs in the rookie league, after his bumpy NWL experiment. Keep an eye on Conner s site as he promises to have some of his excellent video footage up from his trip to Scottsdale in the next day or so as he struggles with slow upload speeds. Crazy. Wonder how long Ghordy can keep this up. 2b Wascar de Leon had a fine game with two hits with a double, a walk and a steal of home (on a double steal with Franklin Labour). De Leon s having a decent, though inconsistent, start of the year for the DSL team. Forgotten CF Jose Patino, on his third DSL campaign, also had two hits. The team scored 7 runs on 7 hits with just 2 RBI, which suggests your basic DSL hijinx. SP Francis Pena ran into a buzz saw of a 3rd inning, allowing hits to four of the first six batters he faced (including three doubles) in the inning and hitting a 5th. He later mixed in a WP and a walk before being relieved in what was ultimately a four-run inning that put the White Sox comfortably on top. Reliever Janly Fermin later had a rough 0.1 of an inning as well, facing five batters, one of whom he walked, one he hit, one got a hit, and one reached via an error. Oof. The White Sox recent big Cuban signing Luis Robert was part of the lineup in this one. Robert walked twice and had a HBP, possibly never swinging the bat on the day. Today s Scheduled Starters: Sacramento: Chris Stratton vs. Matt Magill Richmond: Cory Taylor vs. Nestor Cortes San Jose: Grant Watson vs. TBD Augusta: Stephen Woods, Jr. vs. Luis Escobar Salem-Keizer: Stetson Woods vs. Rico Garcia AZL: Deiyerbert Bolivar?? (I ll just keep that up until I m right some day) DSL: Luis Moreno Oh my goodness we ve reached Woods Overload as both go on the same day. This should be fun. Remember, it s Woods, JR! in Augusta. So all the full season teams won yesterday and all the short season teams lost. Ok, that s a pattern I can get behind. The full season teams have piling up Ls with a two month head start, so they need a little success. Let s keep it up! And short season guys, maybe you can share in it a little more today, especially the rookie league squad that s still sitting on a 0 in the Win column (I think I just gave Joe Angel his wings).

Trivia Answer: Thomas Neal was the last SJ player to complete a cycle, back in 2009 and the last SJ player to have a cycle at home was Kevin Frandsen. Sacramento River Cats News Beede delivers superb start in River Cats 4-2 win Evan Arnold-Gordon El Paso, TX - Tyler Beede earned his first road win of the season and lead the way for the Sacramento River Cats (30-45) as they took care of the El Paso Chihuahuas (37-40) 4-2 Monday night. Richmond Flying Squirrels News Hinojosa Lifts Squirrels Over Trenton In Opener Squirrels Improve To 3-1 vs. League's Best Trenton, NJ - C.J. Hinojosa lofted a two-run home run in the eighth inning on Monday, pulling Richmond ahead in a 3-2 win over Trenton (48-27) at Arm & Hammer Park. Hinojosa's first homer of the season

backed a solid start from Sam Coonrod who went 5.2 innings in a no-decision. The Squirrels bullpen combination of Jarret Martin, Ryan Halstead and Tyler Cyr did not allow a run over the final 3.1 innings. Cyr earcned the save, his 10th in as many chances. The Squirrels (32-43) improved to 3-1 against Trenton on the season. Game two of the series is on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Sam Coonrod pitched with runners on base in every inning, but did not allow a run over the first five frames. The righty walked three and struck out four in the no-decision. Trenton''s Domingo Acevedo was untouchable through the first three innings for Trenton. The towering right-hander hurler accentuated his solid beginning by striking out the side in the third inning. Acevedo needed just 33 pitches to record the first nine outs in the contest. Richmond's Coonrod's was not as sharp as Acevedo, but just as effective through the first three frames. Coonrod worked around a pair of hits from Thairo Estrada - one in the first and another in the third - to keep Trenton off the board. Coonrod used 49 pitches through the first three frames. The Squirrels managed to convert their first hit of the game into a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. C.J. Hinojosa lined a one-out double down the left field line and Myles Schroder worked a walk. With twoouts Ryan Lollis rolled an infield single to shortstop. Estrada gathered the ball and threw it wildly to second in an attempt to get the force out. Estrada's throw sailed passed second base, allowing Hinojosa to score for a 1-0 lead. The Squirrels attempted to squeeze a sixth and final inning out of Coonrod and came up one out short. Trenton rallied with two outs in the inning to take the lead and force Coondord from the game. Dante Bichette Jr. Walked and advanced on a base hit. Devyn Bolasky then connected on an RBI base hit to right field, tying the game 1-1. Bolasky was the last batter for Coonrod as Richmond turned to Jarret Martin with runners on the corners and two outs. Martin's first pitch was wild, passed the catcher to the backstop, allowing the runner from third to score. Acevedo was pulled after seven sterling innings and leading 2-1. The righty stuck out nine batters and allowed just one unearned run on four hits. Cody Carroll entered to start the eighth and was touched up for a pair of runs. Richmond regained the lead when C.J. Hinojosa hammered a two-run homer over the left field wall. It was the first home run of the season for Hinojosa and it put Richmond ahead 3-2. Marrtin tossed the seventh and Ryan Halstead worked the eighth to earn the hold. Tyler Cyr pitched the ninth and danced around a double prior to ending the game. Cyr earned his 10th save of the year in as many tries. The Flying Squirrels continue an eight-game road trip on Tuesday in Trenton, NJ. RHP Cory Taylor (3-7, 4.67) is scheduled to make the start for Richmond against Trenton Thunder RHP Zack Littell. San Jose Giants Reynolds, Garcia Power Giants To 12-4 Victory Duo combines for three home runs and eight RBI's as San Jose routs Stockton SAN JOSE, CA - The San Jose Giants matched a season-high with four home runs in a convincing 12-4 victory over the Stockton Ports on Monday evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose used back-to-back

four-run innings in the third and fourth to break the game open en route to the series-opening win. The Giants (32-43 overall, 2-3 second half) also achieved a new season-high in runs scored in a home game. Bryan Reynolds (4-for-5, 2B, HR, 4 RBI) homered as part of a four-hit, four-rbi night while Aramis Garcia (2-for-4, 2 HR, 4 RBI) smashed a pair of home runs and also drove in four to lead San Jose's offensive outburst. Ryan Howard (3-for-5) added three singles and three runs scored. Mark Reyes (4-9) earned the win on the mound after tossing a season-high 6 2/3 innings with four runs (all earned) allowed. Reyes surrendered eight hits, walked four and struck out five during his 100-pitch outing. Stockton initially enjoyed a 1-0 lead with a single run in the top of the first. Nate Mondou led off the game with a triple to deep center and scored when the next batter, Marcus Semien, hit a sacrifice fly to right. The Giants though immediately answered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first. Howard led off with a single before a one-out double down the left field line from Reynolds put runners on second and third. Garcia then delivered an RBI groundout as Howard scored to tie the game 1-1. Reyes then worked consecutive scoreless innings to keep the game tied before San Jose erupted in the bottom of the third. Howard began the inning with a single before stealing second with one out. Reynolds then laced a single down the right field line to score Howard from second for a 2-1 Giants advantage. Following a walk to Garcia, Gio Brusa stepped to the plate and hammered a double to deep left. The hit scored Reynolds with the second run of the inning. A two-out walk to Matt Pare then loaded the bases before John Polonius bounced a single up the middle to bring home Garcia and Brusa extending the San Jose lead to 5-1. Two home runs in the bottom of the fourth then padded the lead to 9-1 for the Giants. Howard started the frame with his third leadoff single of the night. Dobson then hit a deep fly ball to the warning track in right center that was dropped by Stockton's Seth Brown for an error. The miscue advanced Howard to third while Dobson was safe at second. Reynolds was up next and he launched an 0-1 pitch from Ports reliever Boomer Biegalski over the fence in right for a mammoth home run. The three-run shot was Reynolds' fourth home run of the season. Garcia was up next and he went back-to-back crushing a home run to deep left for a 9-1 cushion. San Jose then pushed their lead to 11-1 in the bottom of the fifth when Garcia connected for his second home run of the night - a two-out, two-run blast to left. Reynolds doubled to deep left with two outs prior to Garcia's long ball. Stockton's Sandber Pimentel hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth before the Ports plated two more runs in the seventh to knock Reyes out of the game. Connor Kaden entered from the bullpen and quickly recorded the final out of the seventh before Dobson capped the scoring for the night with a solo home run in the bottom of the inning. Kaden (2 1/3 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) then kept Stockton off the scoreboard in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the victory. Ports starter Branden Butler (1-2) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) on six hits over 2 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out six. Notes

Augusta Green Jackets News Mazza Pitches GreenJackets to Third Straight Win Augusta, GA-With the game scoreless in the bottom of the seventh, Skyler Ewing on first, Sandro Fabian at the plate, and one out. Fabian hit a double to score Ewing and put the GreenJackets on the board. Jacob Heyward followed with a single to score Fabian to make it 2-0. It was all the GreenJackets would need in a 2-0 victory over the West Virginia Power Monday Night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. It was also the GreenJackets third win in two days. The star of the game was Domenic Mazza who pitched seven innings of shutout ball. He recorded six strikeouts and gave up only four hits. He ran into trouble early on when he gave up back to back two out singles in the first and saw the first two Power hitters reach base in the second. He was able to get out of both jams and settle in after that. "At the beginning I had to battle threw it," said Mazza. "They put some good ABs together. I was able to make some good pitches when I needed to early on. I was able to make the adjustment and start using all my pitches in the strike zone to get them out quicker." For the Power, Eduardo Vera pitched six innings of shutout ball. He struck out four and allowed four hits. He faced the minimum in every inning accept the fourth. For the GreenJackets, Wilson Santos and Patrick Ruotolo each recorded a strikeout in a shutout inning of relief work to close out the GreenJackets victory. The GreenJackets will be back in action Tuesday night for game two of the four game series vs. the Power. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm with the gates opening at 6:00pm. It is Tuesday Brewsday featuring half price beverages all night long, Bank Challenge Night featuring all the CSRA Banks and Credit Unions, and Taco Tuesday presented by Tin Lizzy's Cantina. Stephen Woods (3-6, 3.49) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Luis Escobar (6-2, 4.12) for the Power.

Salem Keizer Volcanoes News Volcanoes drop series opener to Hawks Traven Tapson Boise, ID -- The Hawks scored early and often to defeat the Volcanoes by a score of 8 to 2 on a muggy Monday night at Memorial Stadium in Boise. The Volcanoes, now 3-9, are reeling after losing four in a row while giving up over 9 runs a game in that stretch. Hawks leadoff hitter Chase Anderson jumped on the first offering of the game from Volcanoes starting pitcher Alex Bostic, lofting a fly ball deep to right field. On what would have been a routine fly ball on a typical night, the circling winds sent right fielder Juan Gonzalez spinning as he tried to position himself under the ball. Eventually, the ball landed just out of his reach and by the time he located the ball and returned it to the infield, Anderson had raced around to third for a leadoff triple. The next batter, shortstop Matt McLaughlin promptly hit a rocket right back to Gonzalez for a sac fly, allowing the Hawks to take a 1 to 0 lead. Bostic again found himself in trouble in the second inning when he loaded the bases with just one out. While the Hawks would push across the games' second run on a sac fly by catcher Sam Tidabeck, Bostic was able to get out of the inning and limit the damage when he induced a soft line out from Anderson to end the inning. The Hawks steady offensive attack continued in the fourth when designated hitter Will Haynie hammered a Bostic fastball deep to left center. While the wind caused fits for the Volcanoes earlier in the game, this time it kept the blast by Haynie from leaving the yard as the ball hit off the base of the wall in left centerfield. Haynie would end up on third with a triple and eventually score when right fielder Aubrey McCarty singled him home on a line drive single to center, putting the Hawks up 3 to 0. In the fifth inning, Haynie would again pepper Bostic's fastball off the wall in left-center to plate two more runs, giving the Hawks a comfortable 5 to 0 advantage. The Volcanoes finally got on the board in the top of the sixth when Ryan Kirby turned on a fastball by Boise starting pitcher John Valek, sending it deep into the Boise night for a long solo home run. The Hawks would tack on three more runs against the Volcanoes bullpen to extend the lead to 8 to 1. The Volcanoes would score once in the top of the ninth on a catcher's interference followed by two errors to make the final score 8 to 2. The Volcanoes had a baserunner reach in every inning of the game but were stymied by Hawks' pitching with runners in scoring position, finishing the night 0 for 5 in those situations. For the Volcanoes, Dylan Manwaring showed signs of getting out of his slump by going 2 for 3 with a run scored. Catcher John Riley also reached base three times in four at-bats. The star of the game for the Hawks was undoubtedly Will Haynie, who drove in two and scored twice while finishing just a home run shy of the cycle.

The Volcanoes will look to get back in the win column on Tuesday night when Volcanoes ace Stetson Woods squares off against Hawks right-hander Rico Garcia. The first pitch will once again be at 6:15 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Boise.
