The sophomore clss grew 22.8 percent nd trnsfers incresed 16.3 percent. Firelnds hd its highest enrollment this fll in more thn 30 yers. Firelnds' fll enrollmeru is 1537 students, 4.5 per- cent increse from the fll of "This increse ws due to vriety of cses," sid Lesley Ruszkowski, ssistnt director of college reltions t Firelnds. "All of the deprtments hve been working hrd to improve customer service, tuition did not increse nd we hve dded n dditionl four bchelor's degrees nd nother mster's degree." The four new bchelor's degrees re in visul communictions technology, erly childhood eduction, criminl justice nd mnufcturing technology. In ddition to the new degrees, Firelnds hs four other bchelor's degrees in liberl studies, pplied helth science, science nd nursing nd rts in generl studies of business. A new mster of eduction in curriculum nd teching is now offered. There is only one other mster's degree science in nursing. For this degree, the course work is offered t Firelnds, but the degree will be grnted by the Medicl College of Ohio. "Clsses re pretty full. We re trying to see wht fills quickly so we cn blnce it out in proctive wy by mking more sections," sid lmes M. Smith, Den t Firelnds. "Good progrms, good fculty nd good mrketing led to n increse in enrollment." To nswer to the increse in enrollment, nd to be ble to ensure future growth t Firelnds, new infrstructure is lso being dded. "We hope to see dditionl increses for future semesters: we re currently constnicting new building, the (ilr Point Center. This is plnned to be finished in Mrch 2003,'' Ruszkowski sid. "We hve decided to run more dvertisements on 92.5 Kiss FM on the dy of the show." UAO purchsed more thn second dvertisement spots on 92.5, including Sturdy's dditionl dvertisements. When the Venture Crew lerned in September tht they were to receive the wrd, it cught mny of them off gurd. "We weren't relly shooting for it," Humbel sid. "It ws so unepected." Anderson dded tht Pcllegrino's guidnce hs helped mke the group worthy of the wrd. "He's led us on so mny dventures we didn't think we could do," she sid. "It's good to hve such good role models involved in students personl lives." Though Pellegrino dvises them, students pln everything from dventure trining nd the end-of-the-yer trip to less physicl events like service projects nd fundrisers, often working longside St. Thoms More "nd the Boy Scouts, who re ffilited with Venture Crews ntionwide. Giving students control is the best wy to let them lern, Pellegrino sid. "It's common sense to... let them eplore nd grow," he sid. "As soon s they grdute, they're the ones in the ledership roles." Seeing tht growth is the best pn of leding the group, he sid. "For me, it's gret to see the (students) struggle nd the success tht comes out of it." The FBI identified the ssilnt s Dmir Igric, 29, Crotin who entered the United Sttes in Mimi in 1999 with one month left on his vis. He hd borded the bus in Chicgo. In Croti, the stte-run news gency HINA quoted Igric's stepfther, Ante Spic, s sying the whole fmily ws "deeply shocked," dding tht the fmily hdn't been in contct with Igric for some time. The ttcker struggled with Snds for control of the wheel before it crshed on Interstte 24, 60 miles southest of Nshville.
