There s such a desre n the Unted States to be on the cuttng edge n moves, n art, n desgn, n magaznes, n advertsng that the lteral has become a vanshng speces. At least that's how t ncreasngly seems. So as pulled up to my hotel, had the dstnct and pleasng feelng that may have arrved at the lteral captal of the world. The hotel's phlosophy was spelled out n a seres of sgns that greeted the arrvng traveler on the access road. These were lke the old Burma Shave sgns meant to be read one after another. Here they are the specfcs of the hotel's credo: "Smles...nstead of blank looks." "Warmth...nstead of nsncerty." "Courtesy...nstead of beng mpolte." "Understandng...nstead of closed mnd." 'Frendlness...nstead of rudeness." "Patence...nstead of arguments." "Helpfulness...nstead of not carng." "Respect nstead of ndfference." - "Attenton...nstead of neglect." "Apprecaton...nstead of thanklessness." Now...all of ths s so lteral that was half nclned to beleve t was all a mean joke, meant to make fun of the very concepts t was promotng. Any establshment can promote tself as beng warm, but "Warmth...nstead of nsncerty"? How rght-on-the-nose, how non-cuttng-edge, can you be? The ballroom dancng champonshps were beng held n one of the hotel's conference rooms. Most of the contestants competng for dance scholarshps were women who appeared to be n ther 60s and 70s; some were sad to be n ther 80s, and one n her 90s. They all had been accompaned here from around the country by ther dancng nstructors (most of them men who appeared to be 30 or 40 years younger than the students). The women wore ball gowns, even n the daytme; the men wore costumes that almost cred out "bolero." Brackets ncluded the "nternatonal Prelmnary Bronze Tango," the "Slver Waltz," the "2-Dance Samba/Mambo" and the "Merged Peabody" (ths last one sounded entrely too potentally cuttng edge, and perhaps even extralegal, to me, and as a precauton closed my eyes when t began). t was teeth-chatterng cold n the ballroom, but the offcal program was qute lteral n explanng why: "Contrary to popular belef, there s no Arctc lfe n the ballroom. The ballroom temperature wll be modfed for the comfort of the dancers, not the spectators. f you are a spectator, we suggest you brng a wrap for comfort." Lkewse the rules for the "Mss Elegance and Mr. Gentleman Awards": "The Mss Elegance and Mr. Gentleman demeanor s one of refnement and grace n dsplayng good manners toward others." n ths most lteral of places, t seemed only approprate that the man restaurant was an allyou-can-eat buffet. Havng survved the freezng ballroom and apprecated the ntrcaces of the "Basc Socal Ease Cha Cha," obedently...no, gratefully...stood n lne for my evenng meal. t mght as well have been mmortalzed on road sgns: "Meat loaf...nstead of pork pattes." Ths move just takes that a few steps further, rght down nto madness. The outcome of the pcture depends on your vew of the fnal scenes. Are they fact or fantasy? Whch s worse? 3. "Ran." Japanese flmmaker Akra Kurosawa's retellng of "Kng Lear" s one of the most nvgoratng thngs have ever seen. "Ran" s vsually stunnng and nearly hypnotc. The camera plays the role of mpartal observer, keepng a steady dstance from the mesmerzng events on screen. Ths epc flm appears to be a manfestaton of Kurosawa's feelngs about loyalty, but t's also a parable about justce and the superorty of rghteousness. Up untl ts tme, "Ran" was the most expensve Japanese flm ever made, and t stll remans one of the most ncredble works ever created. 2. "('rmes and Msdemeanors." Woody Allen apples hs superb drecton to hs own scrpt, n whch two stores, one comc and one tragc, ntertwne n ther examnaton of human nature. The frst plotlne nvolves Allen as a documentary flmmaker n love wth a producton assstant (Ma Farrow) he just can't seem to woo. The second stars Martn Landau as an ophthalmologst who has hs mstress (Anjelca Huston) klled when snthreatens to blow the whstle on ther affar. Allen's exceptonal ablty to capture real people as they are (wth flaws) shnes brghtly. A major theme s "the eyes of God," portrayed partly by Sam Waterston's character, a rabb who goes blnd. He and a professor, one of Allen's flm subjects, are the moral centers of the move. The professor commts sucde, though, promptng Allen to re-examne the purpose of exstence. "Crmes and Msdemeanors' s an example of Allen's fner work, almost as great as "Manhattan," but certanly wth a brghter message. t concerns tself wth the? banalty and the evls of modern man n hs search for the meanng of lfe. 1. So much has been wrtten about Scorsese's flm, one of the greatest cnematc achevements of all tme, that beleve any prase would be* redundant. t s dffcult to fnd a move that s so near perfecton n all of ts components: the wrtng, the actng, the cnematography... everythng! "Ragng Bull," the sem-bographcal story of boxer Jake LaMotta (played by- Robert DeNro), s closer to that perfecton than any other flm of the 80s, and closer than most flms from any other decade.
