Issue 9 Principal s Message This week began with our annual Sixth Form Open Evening and I would like to thank all our families who supported us for this important event. Those of you who were able to join us will know that it was the first event in our brand new Sports Hall and, as such, was even more special than usual. These events at our College are always made all the more enjoyable because of the sociable feel to the evenings. They inevitably remind me of what a true family community we are and, as always, it was so lovely to catch up with families that have been part of our community for the past five years. I hope that the evening was also very informative and that it was helpful to take a leisurely tour of the Sixth Form Centre, calling in to see as many members of staff as you could and beginning to have some early thoughts about the subjects your son or daughter may wish to study. There will be another evening in February as you know and, in the meantime, we look forward to the one-to-one interviews with you. For those families who were not able to join us, please be aware that the packs with all the information included will be shared with you and your child during those 1 to 1 interviews with a Senior Teacher. You may have noticed that we were joined by a significant number of new families that evening and can I thank you thank you for making all our external families feel so welcome. With the Sixth Form Open Evening completed, we move on to our next big event. As you will see in the Bulletin, we are working towards a Christmas Market (with a Skating Rink!). Requests are included in the section on the right. Please do read through, volunteer and support and, most importantly, add it to diaries and calendars to ensure you are available to attend - it will be, I have no doubt, a wonderful event. You will also see in the Bulletin other forthcoming events, Mock Examinations, Year 10 Parents Evening, House Joke Competition and Odd Socks Day (there cannot be many schools where a Mock Examination announcement is on the same page as an advert for Odd Sock Day!). As mentioned above, our first Year 10 Parents Consultation Evenings takes place next Wednesday evening. The two evenings are ideal opportunities for parents to have a look at our new build as both evenings will take place in our new Sports Hall. Please feel free during the evening to take advantage of the opportunity to take a look around the building. Senior staff will be on hand to answer any questions. Of course, these evenings are important for you to learn how your children have settled into the GCSE courses and options. As always, I know both evenings will be very well attended. Finally, many of our families will remember the inspirational Physics teacher, Mr Shawn Gavin, who so sadly passed away a year ago. He was and remains a reminder to us all of the impact that truly wonderful teachers can have on the lives of young people. I ask that his family and all who mourn his loss are remembered in your prayers this weekend. Pat Goodhead 10th November 2017 Christmas Market and Skating Event Friday, 8th December 2017 We are very excited about this forthcoming event to be held on Friday, 8th December. We have hired a skating rink from the mainland to provide us with something special for our College community this Christmas period. Skating will be available from 3.30 pm until pm. Entrance to the Christmas Market, which starts at 4.00 pm, will be free! We will be announcing food providers and stall holders over the next week, so please look out for College communications. We ask for our help and support in the following areas: Can you lend us inflatable Christmas items for the day Father Christmas, Snowman etc. Can you help us build a wooden entrance to our Christmas Market are you a carpenter or a generally good DIY person and can spare a few hours! Can you make cakes nearer the time for our Cake Stall in the food area? More information will be shared next week!

From You the light of this moment shines. Grant us to remember you at the heart of each moment. Grant us to remember. 7 Issue 09 Friday 10th November 2017 World Challenge expedition to Morocco pre-expedition to Dartmoor! Eleven students have signed up to go to Morocco, on a World Challenge expedition, in July. This trip involves working on a community project, visiting Marrakesh and climbing Toubkal, the highest summit in North Africa. Fundraising, planning and preparation have been going on for a year now but the group had never really got to know each other until last weekend when they visited Dartmoor! The pre-expedition helps challengers to prepare for the 2-week expedition overseas. We did wonder how a weekend on Dartmoor, during Storm Brian, would prepare us for the 40 degree heat we are expecting in Morocco! We met at college at 4:20am to get the 5:30am ferry across to Southampton, before the four hour drive to the Heartree Activity Centre in Manaton. As soon as we arrived we met our expedition leader, Dan, who will be our leader in Morocco. Then we were given our tents, which we get to keep ready for the expedition, and so we found a sheltered area of the field to put them up. Challengers took turns to be the leader, a role which involved planning, negotiating, delegating and checking on the welfare of team mates. All rose to this challenge excellently. After a walk up Hound Tor in high winds and hail, we had to cook our dinner outside on stoves. This may have been the lowest point of the weekend! So cold! Everyone woke up in good spirits on the Sunday morning, probably as they were pleased to find that they were still in the same field. The winds during the night suggested that we may have woken up a few miles down the road! After breakfast of beans and sausages we packed our rucksacks and set off on a 12 kilometre hike. This really was a challenge as the terrain was boggy and the weather very changeable. We realized how important team work is we realized why this pre-expedition is so important. The team were great. All remained positive throughout (including Miss Vine who managed to sprain her ankle!) and they supported each other very well. Looking forward to Morocco. There is one spare place on this expedition if anyone in Years 9 and above is interested. Mrs. Stirling 1

Annual Cross Country Relays On Wednesday 1st November, 26 Year 7-10 students went to Medina High School for the Annual Cross Country Relays. It is an event that Christ the King College has been successful at in the past and it proved to be no different this year. With many students never having represented the College before in Cross Country, it was an ideal opportunity to gain experience of Secondary school athletics. In only their second cross country competition of the season the Year 7 Girls Team consisting of Phoebe Connor, Robyn Fossa and Lily Barclay ran extremely well as a team to secure the first victory of the day. This was followed by a win for the Year 7 Boys with Henry Morgan, Daniel Frampton, and Shay Hollingshead producing an excellent team run against very tough opposition. Year 8 Girls had hoped to repeat their winning success from a year ago, however finished just outside the medals this year with a very credible 4th position. The team consisted of Naomi Holdsworth, Emily Stasiuk, Jess Heng, Olivia Currie. The next race of the afternoon was the Year 8 Boys which consisted of the experienced Patey twins Jacob and Noah, inform Ollie Sweatman and Jay Spooner producing another commanding performance to take the Year 8 Boys title. This success was a similar theme for the remainder of the afternoon with both Year 9 Boys and Girls, Year 10 Boys and Girls also winning their respective relays. The teams included the following students Lucca Toms (9), Connor Neech (9) Eden Canning (9), Mabel Lewis (9), Caitlin Townsend (9), Lucia Calleja Ruiz (9), Ben Timmons (10), Adam Biss (10), Dylan Holdsworth (10), Fraser Law (10), Hope Roberts (10), Erin Lovely (10), Ella Kemp (10), Abi Lacey (10), Olivia Whitby-Slade (10). Mr Clarke Year 10 Isle of Wight Schools Netball Tournament Wednesday 7th November 2017 Wednesday saw two Year 10 Teams travel to Cowes Enterprise College to play in the annual Isle of Wight schools Netball Tournament. The first match saw our A and B teams play each other, this was a great opportunity for both teams to calm their nerves and get ready for their other matches. This was a well contested game which saw a great standard of play with the A team finishing as the winners. Next up the A team played the hosts, Cowes Enterprise College. The girls had previously played this team in the league and beaten them in a close game so they knew this was going to be a tough match. The girls went 3-0 up and their confidence grew, the play both up and down the court was brilliant and the passing into the attacking circle was outstanding. Abi and Caitlin worked very well in defence and were able to limit the goals that Cowes were to score. The final score was 5-2 to Christ the King College. The A team s third match was against Carisbrooke College, they had a strong start to the game and maintained the pressure throughout. Erin worked well as centre to link the attack and the defence and played a key role in slowing the play down to ensure the correct pass was made. Hope worked relentlessly as wing attack to ensure the shooters always received the ball in the shooting circle in the best position. Olivia H played wing defence and made some great interceptions which allowed our attack to have more opportunities to score. 2

The A teams final match was against Medina, this was a real test of character for our team they went 3-0 down in the first two minutes. The defence were really tested here as their shooters worked very well together. It was clear that their heads started to drop but the girls showed great resilience. Once they achieved a few turnovers due to fantastic interceptions from Grace D, Caitlin and Abi the score was level. The girls were determined to win and were relying on the accuracy of Lara and Molly s shooting. They didn t let their team down and scored against very tall defenders. After being level for a few minutes we went two goals up. The final score was 6-4 to Christ the King College. The B team had 8 players who are all versatile so it was great for the team to play different combinations in each of their games. After their first game against our A team they went on to play against Carisbrooke College. This was a well fought game with both teams giving it their all. The Carisbrooke shooters were very strong and made our defenders Maisie and Ella work very hard; which they did and they achieved some brilliant interceptions. The score was level at 2-2. Olivia W-S played very well in this game and was a key player in passing the ball into the attacking circle. Both Izzy and Charlottes shooting was accurate and they were able to score when they received the ball. The score went to 3-3 but unfortunately, Carisbrooke College. scored in the last minute of the game and won 4-3. The B team s third game was against Medina College who were a very strong team. Sophie played very well as goal defence, she was able to apply pressure to their very accurate goal attack. Grace O-P made some great interceptions and played very well in this game. However, Medina proved too strong and won 5-1 although it has to be said that not once during the game did the girls let their heads drop they played with determination until the final whistle. The B team s last game was against Cowes Enterprise College, the girls were a little apprehensive before this game but they had a fantastic start where the first few minutes of the match the score was level a 1-1. Maia worked very well at centre and was able to help get the ball to the attacking circle. Cowes then scored two more goals, our team was determined and they managed to score again. Putting the score at 3-2. The girls battled until the end but Cowes were able to get one last goal before the last whistle. The final score was 4-2 to Cowes. This was a great score against a strong team. Special thanks to Maisie and Charlotte whot came along and played at late notice. You were great assets to the team Team:- Lara Crouch, Molly Taylor, Erin Lovely, Hope Roberts, Olivia Hughes, Abi Lacey, Grace Domoeny, Caitlin Mooney, Grace Osterman Morgan, Charlotte Tapsell, Maia Merry Jasper, Ella Kemp, Izzy Curtis, Olivia Whitby Slade, Sophie Nolan, Maisie Beere 3

Year 10 Football League Final The Year 10 Boys Football Team travelled to Sandown Bay Academy for a long awaited league decider. Christ the King College took the lead early with Brad finishing first time with a through ball from Jake. Not long after, Sandown equalised after a mix up in the defence of Christ the King. But after another good passage of play, Christ the King took the lead through BT, who was put through by Jude. However, not long after the restart Sandown equalised again after good build up play. Half-Time 2-2 Christ the King started off slow in the second half when they went 3-2 down after another well worked goal from Sandown. With 17 minutes to go, Christ the King hit a stroke of luck, after good defensive play from the 4 at the back, they went onto equalise with BT getting his second with a good finish. But Sandown hadn t given up yet, they scored again to make minutes to go and Christ the King had to stay switched on if they wanted a chance to win this game. They were soon given that chance when George scored from a poor defended corner. He then scored again to put us ahead with a brilliant header from another corner taken by BT. Then with 5 minutes to go, Ryan sealed the victory with a good finish in the bottom right corner. This means Christ the King Year 10 s have won their League! Final Score: Christ the King College 6- Sandown Bay Academy 4 Ben Timbell 10 NGA Team:- Fraser Law, Ben Timbrell, George Takel, George Hunt, Dylan Holdsworth, Jacob Jenner, Sammy Coyle, Ryan Hughes, Bradley Cantelo, Jake Wright, Oliver Carey, Jude Blackley, Adam Biss, Josh Herman, Jacob Cart, Harlen Hunte 4

The bell rung for the final time in the Upper College previously Archbishop King Catholic Middle School, building on Friday 20th October. On Tuesday 31st October we were allowed back in to the building for a farewell evening, where past staff, students, parents and friends met to share fond memories. It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the learning that had taken place in that building over the past 45 years. Photographs and memorabilia was on display for everyone to view. It was lovely to see so many people meeting up, sharing memories and rekindling friendships. All the photographs from this evening can be seen in the Photo Gallery on the College Website 5

Operation Christmas Child We would like to express our gratitude to all students who have contributed to the Operation Christmas Child Shoebox collection so far. We have had well over 20 boxes submitted in the last week alone. Since 1990, more than 146 million children in over 150 countries have experienced God's love through the power of simple shoebox gifts via the Samaritan's Purse's Operation Christmas Child initiative. Year 7's have been very busy contributing to this collection as part of their first 'mission of kindness' this year. There will be a prize for the Year 7 tutor group who submit the most shoeboxes. However, the collection is open to all year groups and we encourage as many students as possible to take part in this display of compassion and charity. The final date to hand in filled shoeboxes is Friday 17th November. Please hand in all shoeboxes to Lower College Student Services. Leaflets with further information and guidance of what to put in your shoebox can be found in Student Services. Heidi Scott-Jackson 7RLO who brought in two shoeboxes this morning - one for a boy, one for a girl! What a star! Miss Godfrey U13s Girls Football Match Report v Cowes Enterprise College. On Thursday evening in chilly conditions Christ the King U13s Girls Football Team had their first away game of the season vs Cowes Enterprise College and Phoebe Connor was chosen to captain the side. With not much time to prepare or warm up it was clear this was going to be a scrappy match, in wet conditions. The girls got straight to work and it was Phoebe Connor who broke the deadlock with only 90 seconds on the clock. The captain (Connor) scored a great individual effort, with a winding run just inside the box and a good finish to match. 1-0 Christ the King College. Unfortunately, the rest of the first half didn t bring about any more key action, although full back Poppy Starkey and Midfielder Bella McGrory-Patton did a great job fending off any threats down the wing and middle of the park, respectively. The team needed reorganising during the half-time team-talk and four substitutions were made, with Halle Condon and Elena Gaskell making their debuts. The second half started much as the first, with another great individual effort from Phoebe Connor. 2-0 Christ the King College. 6

Another five minutes passed, until Holly Mariner was rolled through on goal and calmly slotted home. 3-0 Christ the King College. The strong wing-play from Callie Jacobs and Mia Richardson finally paid off, with a well-placed cross landing at Holly Mariner s feet. The striker made no mistake and slotted home. 4-0 Christ the King College. With the last kick of the game, Mariner topped off her Player of the Match performance earning her hat-trick and the team s fifth goal. 5-0 Christ the King College. We now look ahead to next week s fixture, which is sure to be a tough game, against Sandown Bay Academy. Team :- Phoebe Conner (2), Mia Richardson, Elena Gaskell, Callie Jacobs, Freya Fisk, Halle Condon, Ella Young, Bella McGrory-Patton, Holly Mariner (3), Holly Stephan, Millie Robertson, Louise Young, Naomi Holdsworth, Poppy Starkey.
