1 Race and Ethnicity using the Califrnia Health Interview Survey (CHIS) The Califrnia Health Interview Survey (CHIS) cntains rich and detailed racial and ethnic infrmatin abut Califrnia s diverse ppulatin. This dcument prvides details abut the race/ethnicity variables available in CHIS, hw each variable was cnstructed, and fr which CHIS cycle/s each variable is available. RACEHPR2 (RACE UCLA CHPR DEFINTION, 2007 and later) CHIS 2007 RACEHPR2 was created with the release f CHIS 2007 as a new versin f RACEHPR. The new variable (RACEHPR2) emplys the same lgic as the riginal variable, but is nt cmparable due t changes in the questinnaire. Beginning with CHIS 2007, OMB required a new questin fr respndents that identified with mre than ne racial/ethnic grup. The new questin asked multiple race/ethnic respndents whether r nt they mst identified with a single racial r ethnic grup; nly thse that said yes were then asked which grup they mst identified with. This change results in a much larger prprtin f the sample in the Other Single/Multiple Race categry. The race/ethnic categries fr RACEHPR2 and RACEHPR remain the same: Latin, Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaskan Native, Asian, African American, White and Other Single/Multiple Race. Rules fr categry assignment f RACEHPR2 can be fund in Appendix A. RACEHPR (RACE - UCLA CHPR DEFINITION, 2001 t 2005) CHIS 2001, 2003, 2005 In CHIS 2001, 2003 and 2005, the RACEHPR variable was created as a measure f race that takes int accunt which race/ethnicity the respndents mst identify with if mre than ne race is reprted. Respndents wh reprted mre than ne race/ethnicity were asked which grup s/he mst identified with and RACEHPR was assigned accrding t several criteria (see Appendix B fr mre details). In CHIS 2007 the Office f Management and Budget (OMB) required a change t the CHIS questinnaire that prevents the identical cnstructin f the RACEHPR variable. Fr respndents wh identified with mre than ne race, CHIS was n lnger allwed t ask which race the respndent mst identified with. Instead, a new fllw-up questin was asked: D yu identify with any ne race in particular? If the respndent indicated yes, then a fllw-up questin was asked abut which particular race they mst identify with. If the respndent indicated n, the respndent s race/ethnicity was assigned depending n several new criteria. Due t this questinnaire change in 2007, 1) the RACEHPR variable can n lnger be cnstructed as it had been in the past and is nly available in cycles 2001 thrugh 2005, 2) a new variable, RACEHPR2, is nw available as a cnstruct f race based n the mst identified race infrmatin; this new variable has a much larger multiple race categry and is nly available beginning in CHIS 2007.

Accrding t the Census definitin, 1) there is n separate categry fr Latins since peple wh identify their rigin as Spanish, Hispanic, r Latin may be f any race, 2) race is cnsidered a separate cncept frm Hispanic rigin (ethnicity), and 3) wherever pssible, separate questins shuld be asked n each cncept. The Census race categries are: White, Black r African American, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, Sme Other race and Tw r Mre Races. Respndents wh slely identify themselves as Latin r Hispanic are assigned t the ther categry. Fr mre specific infrmatin n any f these race categries, please g t: RACEDOF (Race Frmer Department f Finance Definitin) CHIS The RACEDOF variable uses the frmer definitin f race classificatin frm the Califrnia Department f Finance s race categries (2001). Latin is cnsidered t be a race categry fr this variable and is given pririty. The categries fr RACEDOF are: Latin, Nn-Latin Pacific Islander, Nn-Latin American Indian/Alaskan Native, Nn- Latin Asian, Nn-Latin African American, Nn-Latin White, Nn-Latin Other One Race, and Nn-Latin Tw r Mre Races. OMBSRREO (OMB Self-Reprted Race Ethnicity) CHIS OMBSRREO is derived frm the RACEDOF variable and fllws the Office f Management and Budget-revised guidelines (1997) set frth in Statistical Plicy Directive N. 15 and the Census mdificatin f the OMB guidelines. OMB separates race and ethnicity, and recgnizes five main racial categries: American Indian r Alaska Native, Asian, Black r African American, Native Hawaiian r Other Pacific Islander, and White. Categries fr the OMBSRREO variable are: Hispanic, Nn-Hispanic White, Nn- Hispanic African American, Nn-Hispanic American Indian/Alaskan Native, Nn- Hispanic Asian, Nn-Hispanic Native Hawaiian, Other Pacific Islander and Nn-Hispanic Mre than ne race. If multiple races reprted and: Respndent identifies with ne race in particular (AA5G, TI2F), then RACEHPR2 is assigned based n AA5F/TI2E. Adjustment 1: All Latin cases (if SRH=1) with a single race reprted t be ther (if nly SRO=1), and in which the race/ethnicity specified in item AA5OS is an identified natinality r skin clr, are assigned t the Latin categry.

Adjustment 4: The cases with RACEHPR~=3 that meet ne f the fllwing criteria are assigned t the American Indian/Alaska Native categry (RACEHPR=3): If identify themselves as an enrlled member in an AIAN tribe (if AA5C=1). If single race, Nn-Latin (if SRH~=1), and American Indian/Alaska Native (if SRAI=1). If single race, American Indian/Alaska Native (if SRAI=1), and mst identify with American Indian/Alaska Native. If multiple race, American Indian/Alaska Native (if SRAI=1), and mst identify with American Indian/Alaska Native.
