The Wildcats face their bitter rivals in No. 18 Penn (3-1) for a 2:30 p.m. matchup SERIES HISTORY Saturday marks the 24th overall meeting between the Wildcats and Quakers while Penn holds the 15-8 advantage in the all-time series. Villanova claimed the most recent outing on March 10th, 2012 in a wild 8-7 last-second victory for the win at Franklin Field as Max hart launched a shot from midfield for the score. VILLANOVA THIS SEASON The Wildcats enter Saturday s contest with a 1-3 record after falling to No. 5 Princeton on Tuesday evening. Prior to the loss, Villanova posted their first win of the season 14-9 against Delaware on March 2nd. All of Villanova s three season losses are to ranked opponents: No. 5 Princeton (L, 14-11), No. 11 Lehigh (L, 11-9) and No. 14 Drexel (L, 12-10). The Wildcats are now in the midst of a five game stretch against teams that are currently ranked in the top-20. As of the latest usila Coaches and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls released on Monday, March 2nd, Villanova will face No. 1 Maryland, No. 2 Notre Dame, No. 5 Princeton, No. 13 Penn State, No. 12 Syracuse, No. 14 Drexel, No. 18 Penn and No. 19 Lehigh on the 2013 schedule. A LOOK AT PENN Penn brings a 3-1 record into Saturday s showdown with the Wildcats. The Quakers are coming off a 6-4 victory over No. 17 Lehigh and opened the season with a 14-9 victory over then-no. 14 Duke. A 6-5 contest over St. Joseph s notched their third win of the season while their lone loss on the year comes from No. 10 Denver (L, 15-12). QUAKER OFFENSE Penn averages 9.50 goals per game on offense and surrenders 8.25 goals per game defensively. Tim Schwalje (8g, 7a) leads the team with 15 points on the year while Issac Bock (5g, 2a) follows closely behind with seven points through four games. QUAKER DEFENSE Junior goalkeeper Brian Feeney is the starter in goal for the Quarkers and has played all 240 minutes on the year while making 46 saves for a.582 save percentage. his GAA currently stands at 8.25 after facing 125 shots. his close defensemen, Anthony Santomo, Maxx Meyer and Matt McMahon have combined for 24 ground balls through four games. THE LAST MEETING After a Quaker timeout with 29 seconds remaining in regulation and the game tied at 7-7, Penn's rob Fitzpatrick weaved his way through the Villanova defense, taking the probable last shot of regulation. What happened next is something for the record books. Villanova s hart - who less than a minute earlier made the game-tying goal with 1:09 on the clock - proceeded to sprint and unleash an underhand blast from the 40 yard line that skidded past Penn's goalkeeper. FRESHMEN PHENOMS The Wildcats start three freshmen this year through the first three games, including Jack Curran and John Kluh on offense and Greg Stamatov in goal. As a class, the first-year players account for 27.3% of goals, 20.0% of assists, 25.0% of total points and 19.5% of ground balls. CAN T STOP CROONQUIST Junior Thomas Croonquist is currently third all-time at Villanova with a.603 faceoff win percentage. Against Drexel, Croonquist won 17 consecutive face-offs bridging the first through third quarters and went 19-of-23 (.826) for the evening, setting a single game record at Villanova. Drexel won their first face-off during the fourth quarter. his win percentage for the 2013 season currently stands at.604. RICE, CASERTANO JOIN 100 POINT CLUB Seniors Jack rice and Will Casertano currently rank amongst some of the best offensive players in Villaova history. rice currently stands alone in 5th place on Villanova All-Time Leading Scorers List and could become just the 5th person in Villanova history to net 100 career goals and the first since he currently stands at 103 points for his career. which places him 18th all-time at Villanova. Casertano s 101 career points place him 19th overall while his 51 assists are tied for 13th place all-time at Villanova. Currently, rice ranks 8th among active career leaders with 99 career goals and is tied for 12th place with 15 career hat tricks. Casertano is 18th on the national scene with 51 career assists. THREE NAMED PRESEASON BIG EAST Senior Jack rice (A) and juniors Thomas Croonquist (FO) and John LoCascio (LSM/D) have been named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team prior to the start of the 2013 slate. rice was selected as an unanimous pick to the team and has been named an all-conference selection every year since his freshman season. WILDCATS FOURTH IN PRESEASON POLL Villanova was picked to finish fourth in the BIG EAST according to the league's 2013 preseason coaches poll. Notre Dame was selected to win the league with five first-place votes. rounding out the order of finish was Notre Dame, Syracuse, St. John s, Villanova, Georgetown, rutgers and Providence. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own teams. Three Villanova student-athletes were named to the 2013 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team: senior Jack rice (A) and juniors Thomas Croonquist (FO) and John LoCascio (LSM/D). This is the fourth season for BIG EAST men's lacrosse. Syracuse won the conference title last year after defeating St. John s in the BIG EAST Championship. CROONQUIST PRESEASON ALL-AMERICAN Villanova s Thomas Croonquist was named an honorable Mention Preseason All-American after a standout sophomore season in 2012, where he earned Second Team All-BIG EAST honors and recorded a.602 face-off win percentage and a team-best 66 ground balls. For his career, the junior currently ranks third all-time at Villanova with a.604 win percentage. DOHERTY SELECTED IN MLL DRAFT Senior attackman Nick Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J./Delbarton) was selected in January's Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Collegiate Draft, going to the hamilton Nationals in the eighth round as the 58th overall selection. Both make their season debut in the leadership role. VILLANOVA U COACHING ACADEMY The Villanova Men s Lacrosse coaching staff is just one of three NCAA Division I schools where the entire staff are alumni of the current school they work for. head Coach Mike Corrado (Villanova 87), Associate head Coach Simon Connor (Villanova 04), Assistant Coach Andy German (Villanova 08), Director of Operations John Woody Derham (Villanova 88) and Volunteer Assistant Coach Joe Canuso (Villanova 06) were all members of the Villanova Lacrosse team during their respective years on campus. Syracuse and Johns hopkins are the other universities where their entire coaching staff is also alumni of their respective universities. 52 YEARS OF TRADITION Villanova is celebrating its 52st year of men s lacrosse this season after the sport was founded in Since its inception as a varsity sport in 1981, the Wildcats have an all-time record of (.535). Michael Corrado is in his seventh season as the head coach of the Wildcats. he has a record of (.552) during his Villanova tenure. Over the past three years, Corrado as amassed a record of (.600). NOVA NATION Villanova s 39-man roster hails from seven different states. The states most represented are New Jersey with 13 and Maryland with eight. BIG EAST BATTLE The 2013 campaign marks the fourth season of BIG EAST men's lacrosse. The seven conference schools that participate in the league are Georgetown, Notre Dame, Providence, rutgers, St. John's, Syracuse and Villanova. The teams play a six-game single round-robin regular-season schedule. In 2014, Marquette will be the eighth program to join the BIG EAST in men's lacrosse. Men's lacrosse is the BIG EAST's 11th men's sport while the Conference conducts 13 women's sports. Villanova already is a member of the BIG EAST in 22 other sports. Villanova was a member of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) from The Wildcats made six CAA post-season tournament appearances in addition to winning the CAA title in 2009 over Towson, LOOKING BACK Villanova went 8-7 overall and 4-2 in BIG EAST play just one season ago. The Wildcats were honored for their year with multiple post-season accolades, including usila honorable Mention All-American and BIG EAST Attack Player of the year in Kevin Cunningham. Cunningham, Jack rice, Matt Bell and Chris Creighton were also named to the All-BIG EAST First Team. Thomas Croonquist, John LoCascio and Michael Vigilante were also tabbed as All-BIG EAST Second Team selections. Corrado was appointed head coach during the summer of 2006 after being named the associate head coach one year earlier. The 2009 and 2010 back-to-back CAA and BIG EAST Coach of the year has led the Wildcats to unprecedented success in recent seasons. During the past five years, Corrado has garnered a.576 overall winning percentage while posting a.630 winning percentage the past three seasons. his career record currently stands at following the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, while posting a record over last three years. Corrado led the Wildcats to an 8-7 overall record in 2012 after playing the third toughest schedule in the nation, including games against nine ranked oppenents throughout the course of the season. Villanova secured the No. 2 seed in the inaugural BIG EAST Championship after finishing the regular season with a 4-2 conference record, but fell to No. 3 seeded Syracuse in the semi-finals. The Wildcats were ranked well inside the top-20 for all 16 weeks of the regular season and were regarded as one of the top teams in the nation proved to be another historic season under Corrado's direction. After guiding the team to an 11-5 overall record and going 3-3 in the highly-competitive BIG EAST Conference, Villanova earned their first-ever at-large berth to the 2011 NCAA postseason after successfully navigating one of the toughest regular-season schedules in the nation. Traveling to the university of Denver in what would be the first NCAA tournament game to be played west of the Mississippi, the Wildcats narrowly fell to the Pioneeres, 13-10, on Denver's home turf. As a student-athlete, Corrado was a four-year starter at Villanova from he was the team's rookie of the year in `84 and named co-captain and Most Valuable Player in his senior season when he collected a team-high 93 ground balls.
